Thanks Matt; that was gonna bug me for at least another week or so.
Talking to my friend today, something else besides Tony’s life, freedom, or kids that could be taken from him at the end of the show, and it would explain the signifigance of those Arab guys. Over the course of the series, we’ve seen how despite what he may like to think, Tony is not a good guy. He’s a lousy father, a shitty friend, an abysmal husband; I could go on. We’ve seen how despite his constant blathering about Family, he’s manipulated and abused his uncle, sabotaged his sister, been ready to murder his mother, and actually murdered his cousin when he became a liability. But the one thing he hasn’t done is become a rat. He’s never bent for the law or showed police anything but disrespect. So at the end of the season, when some charge is coming down on him, it will be a big deal but not too much of a stretch that he tells Agent Harris something about the Arab guys and their possible terror plot. Of course there won’t be a plot (how anyone has thought that the Sopranos would turn into 24 in the final batch is beyond me), but Tony will have compromised the last bit of honor he hasn’t over the last 5 seasons. Maybe end on Harris stopping by Satriales and asking some seemingly harmless questions about New York.
Then again, I’ve been very, very wrong many, many times before.
Opening with Cleaver was great. Also loved the ultra slo mo shot of Sil getting sprayed with blood.
I’d be happiest to see Paulie get whacked. Not so much Sil.
Sil cannot be killed with a headshot for obvious reasons so advantage.
After this episode, I think the rest of the season will focus on the downfall of the NJ/NY families due to internal wars that will leave no one wanting to take over. Tony, Johnny Sack, and Phil Leotardo all have serious regrets about “the life” and the toll it has taken on them. Those who show interest in taking over as a boss are seemingly getting whacked week by week and those who have the support to become boss, Little Carmine, Christopher, and Sil have no desire to be a Boss.
It seems a forgone conclusion that Paulie will get whacked. But maybe Chase is just setting us up to think that and it will be Sil instead. Which sucks, because my two favorite characters are Chris and Sil. And Chris is directly in harm’s way.
While I don’t think Tony has to die, as some here have suggeested, I suppose I could live with that outcome. It’s been his show all along and it would be a meaningful coda. But based on the long drama we already saw earlier this season with the dream/ decision to live/ recovery, I don’t think he will. He’s had his brush with Death and will act accordingly to prevent it again. Possibly the informant angle.
These past two eps are prime examples of what makes this show great. One a little more intimate, that showcased Tony being introspective and dealing with his family. Followed by a little more flashy one that ran the gamut of storylines relating to his other family. I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure they’d be able to capture my attention like before, but I’ll be damned-- it’s good.

I wouldn’t jump to conclusions; the Sopranos often pulls these single episode stories based around the possibility of whacking a main character, but usually don’t go through with it. I think it’s just Paulie’s turn to be on the hot seat. I don’t mind though, the episodes where they considered-but-didn’t-kill Pussy, Ralphie/Johnny Sack, and Christopher were some of my favorites.
True, as far as those previews go. But I was basing my statement more on the character’s arc over the past few seasons. He seems like he is always on the verge of doing something against the family and thus, putting him in the crosshairs.
I hear ya, and now that things are winding down we’re all looking for regulars to start dropping like flies. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Jersey body count ends up quite a bit lighter than people are anticipating. In the final nine, anyway, since they did lose two captains and another made guy in the front end of the season.
Damn, that “Because they’re stupid, that’s why!” line had me in stitches. The implication of it, and Leotardo’s decision to not put up with any more crap has a lot of darker implications (that will more than likely have grave consequences by the end of the season), but that was funny as hell. NY Times had a piece that said Sopransos seems to be going out with a wimper rather than a bang, but I’m not so sure. The first two of the last nine have been great, and seem to set up a lot of interesting stuff for the rest of the run.

Some people seem to think that if bodies aren’t dropping like flies every episode, there’s something wrong with the show.
“Because they’re stupid!” was funny, but the killer for me was Phil’s pause and abso-frickin-lutely perfect delivery of “No. It doesn’t.” a minute later. I missed part of the next scene because I was laughing so hard.
I think that whole scene with the kids really not being into the whole story underlined a theme that seems to be running through the season so far – that the older generation is going to pretty much be it for these families. Those kids couldn’t care less about Phil’s brother. AJ showed with his half-assed attempt to whack Junior that he doesn’t have a clue how this whole thing operates. Meadow seems to get it, but she seems more concerned about the persecution of her dad then stepping into his shoes. Christopher is off in Hollywood. Nowhere do you see the kind of relationship Tony, Sil, Paulie and Big Pussy had when they were younger – a bunch of toughs leanring the ropes of the “family business.” There’s no mentoring going on anymore like Tony did to Chris back when they were younger. Nobody wants to step up and be the boss. The whole business is in its death throes.

Of course it will. This show is grounded in realism and there aren’t a lot of mob massacres in real life where 5-6 top guys in a family are all gunned down. I don’t know what people expect from this show - it isn’t about shooting everyone, it’s not Scarface. Hell, I think they’ve been pretty aggressive with the violence so far.
Thing about this show is, people talk about the quiet episodes as if they’re setting up for something huge, but in reality it tends to be the killings/violence which sets up the personal moments.

Good point and I think that is why Chase had the bosses or those in position to be - Tony, Johnny, Phil and Little Carmine - in the last episode being negative about being boss nowadays. Phil drove home the fact more then the others when he said (paraphrasing) “twenty years in the joint and not a peep and for what?” then the short troll next to him at the bar said something about this is not for our generation.
Tony telling Carm he’s old and watching his reaction to Phil and Carmine’s comments, plus his disappointment with Christopher, pretty much sealed the deal that the man is tired of it all.
Like others I’m terrible when it comes to predictions but here I go

Tony makes a deal with the Feds and turns in those two Arab guys we’ve been seeing in previous episodes. This is turn takes some of the heat off Tony but in true Sopranos fashion someone from Tony’s crew gets wind of this and spreads the rumor that Tony is working with the Feds and is going to flip (he’s not going to flip, but remember we’re dealing with guys who spread that rumor about Tony and Ade). This creates several possibilities for the future of Tony’s character
