I’ve never played a single GTA game, and I’m fine with that.
If RDR2 is just close to the storytelling and characterizations in RDR, it’ll be a win.

I think parts of GTA 5 are inspired and I think anything with Lamaar and Franklin is goddamn hilarious.
It’s just that GTA5 is trying to appease so many people, that it never really knows what it wants to be. GTA4 absolutely is making a point: That the American Dream is a fucked up, shitty thing. The fact that Niko, who came from his home to get away from the violence, gets embroiled in the same violence in America and essentially loses everything at the end is what I love about the game: It has balls.
It sure has BOWLING BALLS COOOOOOOOUSSSSSIN!
Nah but seriously, I’m with you. The plot for GTA4 was so close to being legitimately brilliant for all the reasons you mentioned. I was really pulling for that game. But it was let down in some key areas, specifically the driving which is ASS.
As for GTA 5. What can I say, I love a good crime caper with scumbag gangsters and thieves. Franklin and Lamarr were great. I really enjoyed Michael and his Sopranos esque plot. And I personally think Trevor is brilliant. The typical GTA player embodied in a character that makes narrative sense. I’ve really been meaning to play through that again but I just haven’t found the time.
I hope they go all out on a ranching subgame. Harvest Moon up in this bitch.
Shitty microtransactions underpinning an online mode where you gallop around shooting other assholes, without end? Pass.
Shitty microtransactions underpinning an online mode where you BUILD A FUCKING RANCHING EMPIRE AND CAN VISIT OTHER PLAYERS RANCHES?
Well, okay then. I got money, Rockstar. Make it worth my while.
GTA game with a fun, pulpy story actually worth a damn? *Chinatown Wars.*Thats my jam.
You will not be invited to any hoedowns at ZHUKOV RANCH.
I wanna be a rancher! Or a sherriff! Or if I have to be a bad guy, at least the boss!
One aspect that seems common through all the Rockstar games is that I’m always playing the person I’d least want to be in their world.
3rd-rate lackey getting bossed around by losers and psychos? Pass.
Loser/psycho getting bossed around by feds? Pass.
Tommy Vercetti, crime lord, porn studio owner, millionaire and gun-toting vigilante? Oh wait, yeah, that was awesome!
Basically, I’m saying I want Swearengen: The Game.
Will there be blackjack? And hookers?
Holy shit. You may just pinpointed why I thought Vice City was the only engaging GTA storyline!
Yes! Actually, forget the old west part!
Well, it’s also the only GTA story that seems to know what it wants to be. It’s a violent comedy from start to finish, and it’s a hoot on those terms.
Later games want to be everything: comedy, gritty crime drama, torture porn, etc. Pick a narrative!

Coming out on October 26th, set those calendars and start praying to whatever gods are listening it doesn’t suck.

If they do something worthwhile with the multiplayer - either a ranch-based town builder (my idea!) or a Battlegrounds style battle royale (someone else threw that out there, and honestly that could be amazing) … then it will be awesome!
If they just rip out the GTA Online formula and replicate it here - then it will almost certainly suck. And in that case its unlikely the single-player remains unaffected. The whole package will stink.
But I presume Rock Star San Diego is developing this, and those guys haven’t been rattled by top-level management leaving as much as the main house has. So it should be gucci.
Cool, just in time to distract me from the midterms.
If I didn’t have such a fuck huge backlog to work through I’d probably load up GTA V’s single player again. I enjoyed the living hell out of HEAT: The Video Game.
AI think RDR will be fine simply because–it’s not GTA.
Which means they can be as ambitious as they want to be with the single-player.
Yeah, keep in mind that because of the scope of these games, they have entirely different teams working on single vs multi. Whether the single player game is any good has almost nothing to do with multiplayer.
I’m more worried that the story will suck so hard that I can’t enjoy lassoing people and dragging them through town. RDR should have me confident, but then I look at almost every other Rockstar game and get worried again…
We are talking about two entirely different studios here - San Diego and Edinburgh (formerly DMA Design, shoutout Uniracers).
In the main studio case, they actually did redirect their single-player team and converted them over to GTA Online. All the single-player DLC they were working was scrapped, for the most part, with a couple threads making its way into the online iteration.
Given that San Diego does its own thing, I don’t think we have to worry about that, per se. But they both report to the same publisher, and honestly Take 2’s approach to microtransactions might be the worst out of any major publisher. So hopefully they are able to strike a balance there.
AMy only regret is that it’s not out sooner.
… also that I have bonitis.
