This is one of those games that makes owning a console worthwhile.
-strokes PS4-
Yeeeeeeees my dear…you’re purpose will soon be realized.
I think the graphics in this game look great by the way. I decided to try RDR a few months ago, and I was shocked how poor some of the graphics were (great at the time!) compared to games that have been released recently. I was a little let down by the mechanics – RDR is a clunkier game than I remember. I put it away. I’ll just let it remain a great experience and my favorite game!
You didn’t enjoy the cow herding missions?
AStarted replaying RDR recently on PlayStation Now (itsnt that what it’s called?). Clunkier than I remembered, and more go fetch quests but still great.

Herd some cows, bitch!
I liked the cow herding.
It was part of the only sequence with a well-written female character that Rockstar has ever produced.
Herding cattle in the middle of a fuckhuge storm?
So good.
The Ranching missions near the end were also fantastic.
So am I the only concerned one around here that a post GTA-online Rockstar/2K is going to turn the sequel to my favorite game of all time into a microtransaction mini-MMO monstrosity at the expense of another stellar single player campaign and sp dlc?
It’s a valid concern. I was actually waiting for it to be brought up.
Speaking for myself, I’m not really worried based on my experience with GTA5. Out of the hundred + hours I spent in that game I probably spent one in GTA Online. GTA5 had an absolutely fantastic Single Player with probably the best GTA story so far. Sure, single player DLC would have been nice, but it never felt like something that was needed cause the game itself is pretty complete. If they can deliver another experience like that here, with a compelling narrative built around a huge, detailed map I can explore and have fun with at my pleasure, I’ll be happy, and gladly ignore the hackneyed bullshit they most definitely will put in the Multiplayer side.
My concern is that the storytelling advances Rockstar showed in RDR were a fluke. GTA5 was such a lame, nihilistic slog that I couldn’t be bothered to play past about the halfway point.
RDR still had the terrible side stories, but its main narrative was a real winner for a studio whose only other brush with writing competence came in a game they didn’t really make (LA Noire).
I have faith that Rockstar will make a fun, huge single player game. I’m merely hopeful that the story connecting everything is worth a damn.
Holy shit. Someone else that finally recognizes that RDR was basically (with the possible exception of Vice City) the only compelling single player narrative Rockstar has ever put together.
AY’all are tripping. GTA 5 was great.
San Andreas was a pretty good single player campaign. Felt like if the Friday movies were an Action Epic a la Michael Bay.
RDR was one of the best video game stories ever though. Definitely in a class all its own. I expect this new one to be a smoother, more technically impressive game (and quite enjoyable in those terms), but I’d be quite surprised if they were able to match that story.
AI’ve said this before: I think GTA 4 is a better game (storywise) than people give it credit. The problem with the game is that it also has to be a GTA game. It’s a problem that GTA5 similarly has; moreso because it’s following a game that many people found “not as fun” as previous GTAs. So it tried to maintain the nihilism of 4 while trying to be as “fun” as San Andreas–and the results are mixed.
Part of the reason why RDR is so damn good is because the game doesn’t have to live with the expectations of being a “GTA game,” so RDR had a level of freedom that GTA 4 and 5 didn’t.

Didn’t care for the cow herding, but I loved that character. She was really was well written.
I was really disappointed that the game wouldn’t let me choose to try to stay with her. Of course, it likely would’ve ended with a burnt down farm full of corpses, but moments like that are when I wish someone would make a game where the open world concept applied to the narrative a bit as well.
GTA4 was a step forward for sure. It was trying to tell a real story for the first time. It ended up kitchen-sinking itself into a mess of an ending, but I really thought that after GTA4 and RDR, that GTA5 was going to be something special…
and it was, in the way the worst diarrhea of your life was something special.
Hateful characters. A threadbare, insipid story. A narrative mean streak that makes me unsure whether the writers hated themselves or us more - whichever it is, I’m certain they’re the type of people who watch snuff films for a laugh. I can’t recall every playing another game that lacked a single emotional response from me, besides, “Oh, fuck off, game.”
But RDR2 still gets a preorder. (so would a Bully 2!)
