Paris Hilton in prison breakout shocker!

The outrage isn’t so much about Paris Hilton.

It’s about a broken justice system that routinely laughs in the face of the unwashed masses and their silly cries for better prison conditions and fair sentencing, only to roll out the red carpet for the white daughter of a multi-million dollar income family.

This is simple: convince me that a black male could have committed the exact same crime and be sentenced to 45 days, have that sentence reduced to 25 days in less than 72 hours, and then be released because of potential mental instability and depression within days of her arrival.

I don’t care about Paris Hilton. I do care about the flimsy legal standard for celebrity and the culture in America today that will reward her with more attention for subverting it, all the while ignoring the real problems…like Darfur. It’s a fucking disgrace.

No, tandem. The prison sentence she got was unusual. If you don’t believe ME, look up a few posts and see other people saying the same thing.

As for ‘Phil!’ - I’m not defending her. I don’t care about her and she probably is a truly terrible person. I just see these threads as excuses for a bunch of guys to get out their nasty little misogyny, which we see all the time with constantly calling female celebs bitches and sluts. But hey, put yourself in that worthless camp.

Also, people begrudging all the attention Paris gets then feed the beast.

I like ya, Devin, but I don’t think I can agree with your stance. Where you see misogyny, I see standard internet snark. I mean, I see no difference in calling Paris a slut and calling the girl over in the nerd wedding thread a heifer and calling for her and the grooms extermination. I don’t think you seriously wish for them to be dead, you’re just joking around. Same thing that is going on in this thread.

There’s been a bit. Not as bad as I’ve seen elsewhere, but a few posts in here (possibly my crabs joke included, ho ho!) kinda touch an uncomfortable line.

The sentencing was excessive for a probation violation. I have a couple of buddies one Mexican, one white. The Mexican had the same offense as Paris Hilton (suspended licence from a DUI) and simply got lo-jacked. The white guy did much worse, same punishment. Just sayin is all.

Stop bringing sense and knowledge to this thread!

I actually did not know the sentencing was excessive.

And reading back through the thread I see a post that basically calls for her to be ravaged(raped).

I agree that there is a difference between joking around about her being a slut and seriously calling for her to be abused while behind bars. Is the joke in bad taste? Is it a joke at all? Depends on the persons actual intent, I guess. I hope no one in this thread seriously wishes for the her to be raped or killed. She’s just a vapid, spoiled rich girl who parlayed a sex tape into fame. But, those dweebs getting married at a theme wedding don’t deserve to have a flamethrower turned on them, either. But, it was a funny thing for Devin to post because no one seriously thinks he wishes for them to be barbecued alive. It’s a hyperbolic joke. I made a few at their expense as well.

Yes, it really is. The court system HATES revoking probation, and tries as hard as it can to avoid doing it. Again, this happens all the time on cases much worse than a simple DUI and license violation.

She might be going back, now.

I don’t know where this whole “The sentence was excessive!” shit is coming from.

I know two people who had the exact same DUI/Suspended licencse situation and both did two months in jail for it.

The sentence is completely fair. I’m pretty sure I’m not in the minority on this, either.

She’s a very public figure who flaunted her disregard for the law, as evidenced by failing to register for the court-order alcohol rehab program, and by the two citations for driving with a suspended licence.

So what’s the appropriate penalty here? 50 or so hours of community service? A fine?

I’m interested to know just how painless we can make this process for Paris.

EDIT: Devin, I’m surprised you don’t see good reason for a certain amount of moral indignation on this one. The “actual legal situation” and the ensuing talk and coverage seem to me to be pretty fucking emblematic of a ton of the problems we’re facing in this country. The fact that this is receiving so much coverage (because the media that created her continues to make more money off this controversy than wholesale slaughter in Darfur) is only one of those problems.

I was woken up this morning around 5 by the sounds of helicopters. This used to happen all the time back when I lived off Wilshire because of the police, but now I had only one thought - FIRE IN THE CANYON (it’s a friggin’s drought out here)!!

But then I turn on the local news and it’s just all the goddamn choppers floating over Paris Hilton’s house waiting to follow her OJ-style back to the courthouse.

I heart L.A. so much.

I feel really bad that the last time I heard or even thought about Darfur was in fucking Nighthawk vs. Hyperion.

I feel bad that you’re reading fucking Nighthawk vs. Hyperion.

Apparently people can’t multitask. You have to choose between opposing genocide and being pissed at the justice system for allowing Paris Hilton not to serve her sentence.

That sums it up.

Was it a bad taste joke ? Sure. The taste level here is the same as joking about a school shooting, which has it’s own thread.

The only thing I actually wish for Paris Hilton is that she would get sentenced to a stay in the Negative Zone.

This has in no way changed. All that’s happened is that she was downgraded to house arrest, for the sake of her own comfort.

I gotta agree with Quarant here. Whether the sentence was excessive or not is irrelevant. Paris was sentenced by a judge for a particular amount of time in jail and the LA Sheriff Department decided to override it. That’s bullshit.

Additionally, the justice system often attempts to deter crime by making an example of a specific individual to show others what could happen to them if they do the same. Paris actually getting sentenced to jail has shaken all the celebutards in their pretty, little Gucci shoes (e.g., Google Nicole Richie and you’ll see plenty of interviews where she admits to being really scared of facing jail time for her own DUI charges, due to go to court soon.) Her being released from jail just goes to shows us that one can repeatedly violate the law and not have any consequences.

Are we not thinking too small here? Perhaps it will encourage more people to become white and famous. Some times the glass is half full.
