Strangely enough, the first thing I did last night with the few minutes I had was fire up Doom II. It was still pretty cool. Kinda fugly but still playable and still a blast. I’ll definitely be visiting those games some more. Long live FPS shotguns!

I think that’s completely fair, though obviously I’d rate it higher. I’m a sucker for certain types of games (who isn’t, I suppose). Set a decent game in the Star Wars universe, for example, and all else being equal my score would probably go up a point or so. Same for me with spooky, demon-riddled passageways and space marines.
Your given Chewer mileage may vary.
Yeah… the game is incredibly simplistic and fairly repetetive, but it’s fun. A solid 7/10, like Dan says. I have to agree 1000% with the complaint about the audio logs/emails/videos… gets a little tedious…
Yeah, yeah, Doom 3 is still Doom 3.
But how’s co-op mode?
Every game mag has said, more or less, that co-op is the only non-eyecandy saving grace. But I’ve read that it has a problem with spawning all the way back at the beginning. Anyone played with it yet (online or System Link)?
I think I like this game for many of the reasons people complained about it.
Still haven’t cracked open SC because I have been playing through this. So far it is exactly what I had hoped for: Fun, mindless, little creepy, good graphics…
Anyone playing online at all?
If the X Box version is a straght up port of the PC version, then my opinion is Great Graphics (At least on a decent PC) but only pretty good game play. Some nice touches like the emails but not enough to make it a really memorable game. Fun but forgettable.
IMHO Half Life 2 is much better, even in the scare department. The scariest scene in Doom 3 pales before the Ravenholm level in HL2…
Another problem is that after a while the scares in Doom 3 cease to scare. You KNOW that there is something lurking in that dark room or corridor so a lot of the shock value is lost. HL2 is a lot smarter in that not every darkened place or room contains a monster, and some enviorments that seem safe at first glance are real deathtraps. The way the the AntLions can pop out at you in the “Sandtraps” level without any warning is a good example of that.
Doom 3 is a fun ride that gets pretty repetitious after a while, while Half Life 2 , overall, keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole game.
I would give Doom 3 a B but HL2 an A.
My only question is: Is it worth the $50 or not? Should I hold out and rent it later?
And keep in mind I’m a sucker for good graphics. They go a long way in my book.
The collector’s edition is worth owning just for the ports of the original games. The single player is entertaining but nothing amazing. I believe the recent crop of first person shooter games (SW: Republic Commando, Brothers at Arms) wipe the floor with Doom 3 in the single player department but that’s just me.
But the online co-op, deathmatch and original ports make it worth a purchase. If you just want a taste of the single player, rent it. Sorry Singer.
I got the chance to play a little more last night. I started over and pretty much did a quick save right where I got the shotgun so I haven’t really done much yet, but I’m taking it nice and slow checking out all the audio/video/text messages I pick up along the way. It’s actually pretty cool. You get the idea that all hell is gonna break loose but there are some shady UAC shenanigans going on leading up to it, like “appointed volunteers” for expeimentation.
I mashed a zombie with my flashlight and he exploded. heh heh…

All zombies get a flashlight to the head from me now. If you run up, smack, run back, repeat, you can kill them without taking a hit or wasting ammo.

Yup, it works great, but I wouldn’t recommed doing the same for pistol wielding zombies unless you don’t mind taking a hit. I charged at one guy from across the room, flashlight blaring, and he shot me up on my journey to explode him. Didn’t really hurt me much though, so it was still worth it. I get shot even when I try to shoot them, so I guess it works out the same either way… for me at least.
No, I only flashlight bash the regular zombies. The ones with guns get the pistol or machine gun and everything else so far gets the shotgun. I’m ready for a new gun though, hope it comes along soon.
I tried playing online a couple of days ago for a few minutes. All I got to do was the deathmatch game where you have a set number of live (forget what it’s called). It was fun. There were some other people playing too that kind of came and went but there was this one guy in there KICKING MY ASS with a rocket launcher. It was pretty much me against him for that round, but I hung in there like a trooper and let him abuse me. He was cool about it though, not arrogant at all. I just got obliterated. I might have scared him once or twice once I found the rocket launcher and I tossed some grenades around with abandon, but I don’t think I got him, and to be honest, he probably wasn’t too scared either. The next round would have been more fun since there were more people in there (to abuse me), but I had to sign off.
I’ll try again soon, and I want to check out online co-op sometime. The pace kinda reminded me of Quake III which I got to try online a while back on the dreamcast of all places. That was my last shot at online gaming before I finally got xbox live a couple weeks ago.
Now I just have to tie up my fiance every now and then so I can spend some time playing and not get crap for it. You know, because staring at the tv for a few hours is just SO much more productive than playing a video game… …d’oh…
The single player is easy (beat it in 3 days) but it was what I was expecting – just straight up shooting with nice eye candy. I agree with what other people have said about the PDAs – it felt like I was spending half my time looking/listening to them. If you manage your ammo, you don’t really need the extra stuff in the lockers. I’m going through the game again and I’m not even bothering with the lockers this time out.
Haven’t tried co-op yet, but deathmatch is fun – when it works. I’ve had to disconnect about half of the games I join because the lag is so bad. My ping is usually 100-200, if that has anything to do with it (but that’s what I see most players at).
Not a Halo 2 killer, but a good game, especially the CE with the old versions of Doom on it.
Got about halfway through the game this weekend (from what I have heard) and I am enjoying every minute of this game. I like the slower pace (compared to Halo 2) and I am taking full advantage of the lockers/PDA’s to make the game as intense as possible. I know some people just plow through, but by immersing myself into it, I feel like part of a movie.. Pretty happy so far..
Hopped on-line for a bit.. I realized I only like playing with people I know (or feel comfortable with - like CHUD people) because the average person playing is just a huge dildo..
I was disappointed to learn that there is no split screen multi-player or co-op (that I can find). I usually do this with my brother and it is a blast. Looks like I got to borrow another XBOX to system link (speaking of which, is it as simple as putting a ethernet cable between 2 XBOX’s? I have never done it before)..

Yep, that’s all you have to do. Only problem is you’ll need another copy of the game. Not sure if it’s worth renting a copy for a few days or not, since I haven’t tried co-op out.
A buddy of mine got this a few days ago, and I played for maybe 3 hours. I guess I can see how it’s not for everyone, but I love it. I never played the PC version, but it’s now one of my favorite Xbox games. Soon… it will be mine.
I didn’t have a chance to check out the older DOOM games, but how is co-op/multiplayer on those? Is there an option for system link?

I don’t know about system link, but I played Doom II co-op this past sunday with my sister’s boyfriend for a while. It was split screen and it was a heck of a lot more fun than I expected it to be. It looks like you can play like that with 4 players even, but that might be a little chaotic. Definitely worth checking out.
Got this in the mail today and I gotta say, I’m really enjoying it. I personally think this works so much better with a nice home theater as opposed to on a computer. Classic Dooms are pretty great too. Haven’t tried LIVE play yet but I will soon enough.
I’m happy.
Got this day of release.
Starts off slow, but the second I walked into a room with a freakin Satanic shrine in the middle and living flesh growing out of the wall, I was sold.
It’s pretty simplistic FPS gameplay at its core, but it more than makes up for it in atmosphere and scare factor. Tackling this at night with all lights off, and my 5.1 system all doing a kickass job has been a blast…
I have 3 issues, though. One, the flashlight. Switching between no light and a shotgun, or light and a glorified billy club as a weapon is kind of a pain. But, without a doubt, that’ll get fixed soon with one nice little XBox Live patch.
Two, load times. I expected this, though. The annoying one is that there’s a load time just to pause and unpause the game. Fie on that, says I.
lastly, classic Doom. Perfect port. Problem is, there’s no way to adjust the controls…to the dismay of a bunch of hardened FPSers I’m sure, I’m still not used to the “new” control scheme (left stick moves forward, back, and strafes, right stick looks around)…but I think I’ll be using this and Chronicles of Riddick to change that.
Overall, though, it was worth the bucks.
Problem is, it’s competing with God of War for my attention these days.
