Sounds good to me. May not have the depth and story of a Halo or Half Life but a frenetic, twitchy, moody atmosphere can go a long way too. I’ll get to see for myself pretty soon. Speaking of Half Life, still have to see Half Life 2 someday…
I’ll be picking up the pc add-on this afternoon (and probably finishing it in one sitting later tonight). Count me amongst those who thought D3 was a blast.
Just came back from lunch and I picked up my Collector’s Edition along the way. It comes in a snazzy metal case like the Halo 2 Collector’s edition did. I wasn’t really expecting that so it was a cool little bonus on its own. I’ll be checking it out a little bit later tonight. Should be fun. Woo hoo!

Well, don’t expect “frenetic”. At all. It’s more like a haunted house ride, only you get to shoot the asshole that made you jump. To be honest I only got about halfway through before terminal boredom set in. I hear the Hell levels are pretty cool though.
Hmmm. I preordered this one a few months ago. Gamestop bastards, no phone call reminding me that release is today (I was thinking tomorrow). Wonder if they’ll have any of the collector tins still left…
Not sure if it’s just my Gamestop being competitive (EB is 3 seconds away from it), but the past few months they have been getting the big titles on release day, not the day after like usual. I know for GT4 the manager drove up to the airport in KC to have it in early.
My local Gamestop is pretty good too, but they have a Best Buy right behind them (they share the same parking lot), so I think they go the extra mile to beat Best Buy’s lazy shelving habits.
Ordered this off of Amazon last night so I probably won’t be getting it 'til sometime next week. Can’t wait to play this (and the old school Dooms) on my home theater.
Picked up my CE copy at lunch today… Because my previous week ws so freaking busy, I haven’t even loaded up SP: CT yet.. I may burn through some Doom first and it is a little more mindless, but should be easier to just pop in and shoot things.
Picked up the Collector’s Edition today. It’s a fun game, but nothing great. I found myself playing it for three hours, then stopping to play Chaos Theory and bits of God of War. Doom 3 is fun in short bursts and the only thing keeping me from selling it after finishing the single player is the decent multiplayer and original Dooms.
I only got to play for a few minutes last night, but it sure is a pretty game. Pretty impressive. I rushed through the opening just to get to a point wher eI could kill something since I only had a few minutes but I was enjoying myself quite a bit. I’ll have to start over and get a better feel for it when I have some more time. So far so good though.
Be sure to read your in-game emails, look at all the video disks you pick up, interact with all the computers you can, etc.. There’s a lot of story going on there that isn’t given to you through gameplay, and it fleshes out the experience rather nicely (to me, anyways). I know that reading in-game text is anathema to most console gamers, but I think it’s worth it.
I’ll do that. I was just rushing since I was pressed for time. I usually drag stuff out a bit anyway so I’m pretty sure it will be a good experience. I’m still suprised at how nice it all looked. Wow.
I’m thinking of picking this up with Splinter Cell, but I keep thinking how I don’t need a bunch of FPS [Doom III, Halo 2, etc]
How does this compare to Halo 2? I know they’re different from each other but how is the online play?
Edit: After reading some of the comments I think i’ll maybe give it a rental and just get Splinter Cell: CT, dosn’t sound that enticing or long lasting.
One of the cooler things about Doom 3, on paper at least is that you can play online Co-op, which would have been really friggin’ cool for Halo 2. Oh well. I don’t know how it is in execution yet on my part but from a few reviews I read it sounds like it came together pretty well. Can’t wait to give it a shot.
I like it so far. A bit simplistic, but still fun. Some pretty creepy stuff going on too, looking into a small hole in the wall to see one of the fireball monsters slinking over & under pipes toward you is cool. The sound is amazing and mixed perfect, you can always hear what you need to.
Do headshots matter? I’ve blown a few zombie heads off, but they were close enough that they would have probably died in one shot regardless.

I think the problem with the way it’s implemented in Doom 3 is that there’s no indication of which audio logs or e-mails are vital and which are just background fluff. Given that some of them are pretty lengthy, it makes the game a tad lumpy when you have to trawl through everything you find just in case there’s an important security code buried at the end of an audio message. I know you can carry on with the game while they play, but there comes a point when you just tune out hearing how yet another guy’s job sucks and how something weird is going down in Delta Labs.
For what it’s worth, my opinion of the game hasn’t really changed. It’s a fun little spookshow, but the gameplay mechanics don’t match up to the glossy visuals. Strip away the graphical sheen, and you’ve got a game environment that’s about as interactive and dynamic as the first Doom, where atmosphere has to be artificially maintained through cheap shocks and nonsensical restrictions (torch or gun?)
It’s worth playing, but there’s no way on Earth (or Mars) that it deserves 10/10.
