Doom III (Xbox) Post-Release discussion

I played a few stages of Ultimate DOOM today, it hasn’t aged very well but it’s still pretty fun, still worth having for sure. Man, I hate it when friends won’t give a game a chance. We tried some 3 player co-op(on my insistance), and all they did was bitch and moan about how they hated it. Oh well.
Still haven’t tried DOOM II, but I can’t wait because I never beat the original.
What I wouldn’t give to have DOOM 64 on here though. Oh sweet, sweet DOOM 64.

I had to wait a year to play this, but it was exactly the fun, dumb guilty pleasure that I was hoping for. Sure, it can’t compete with Half-Life’s story or Halo’s strategy or anything else, but man, this game is a fucking HOOT. Just a great, out-of-control carnival spookhouse.

Probably the best graphics I’ve ever seen on a home console, too. I know the tech heads are sneering about how shitty this game is compared to the PC original, but strictly from a visual standpoint, this game blows both Riddick and the Master Chief out of the water. Absolutely stunning stuff.

And playing the classic Dooms with a controller is so, so sweet.

Played a few rounds online (Jer, I saw you jump on just as I was getting off - we should give it a go sometime). Not as much fun as I had hoped, but then again I was playing against nothing but random rocket whores it seemed. Plus, I’m so used to Halo 2 that any FPS is gonna feel tame to me at the moment.

Oh, and co-op with the Classic Dooms: FUN!

Yeah I’ve got to agree totally. And the audio is just as good as the graphics in my opinion.

Except for Halo 3, whenever that comes, I’ve learned to never expect ANY FPS to fuck with Halo 2 in the multiplayer department. It’ll only lead to disappointment. And in this game’s case, the multiplayer is as simplistic as they come. That said, chasing someone down with a chaingun like a maniac has its charms.

Anxious to try some online co-op. If you ever see Wayward 1 on Live be sure to send me a message because I have been aching to try it.

About 3/4’s through game now and enjoying it still.. Oh and while the flashligh thing is annoying, I think it ads to it because when I switch back to my gun and it’s pitch black.. it’s pretty freaky..

Also agreed that the best way to play is at night, no lights, with sound cranked way up…

Just got the chainsaw last night, fucking fun as hell. I love how powerful it is, yet it’s so loud it’s hard to hear the demons popping in, great trade off.

I’ve played this on 3 different people’s Xbox’s now, and mine is the only one with load times for pausing. Maybe it’s because it’s an older model, I’m not sure, but it’s a bit annoying. The other 2 just have a slight pause… when I pause.

Yeah, it is. If it weren’t for that, I’d be sprinting around with that sucker constantly. I guess id knew that, those bastards.

I played some co-op today, and other than enemies dying with a bit of a stutter, it ran flawlessly, I’m impressed. The other guy who was playing was from Europe too, so I’m doubly impressed. It’s pretty funny to watch your teammate looking around with a flashlight for his missing backback. I can’t wait to try this on system link. I was worried about having to start from the beginning every time you die, but the stages aren’t so big that it’s a huge problem, just mildly annoying if you get lost easily. A mic is a neccessity though.
Tried some deathmatch too, but I was slaughtered. I couldn’t figure out the whole “warm up” thing, but I dug it when it got going. I only played on one stage, but it’s pretty cool that you can hit switches to turn off lights and close shutters, then hide in the darkness. There’s also a watch mode that’s just like Quake Arena where you can fly around the map, or watch the game from a particular player’s viewpoint. Overall I like it a lot, but i’m not sure if I’d rather play this instead of Halo 2(to which I am still completely addicted).

So I’m playing the demo for this and… there’s no melee attack while you’re holding a weapon?

Nope, no melee slapping with weapons in hand. Actually it would be nice though, but I can get along without it.

On saturday I got the chance to play some system link co-op. there were three of uss playing and passing controllers around after dying. we were playing for hours and made our way to hell and back again before moving on to other stuff. I haven’t done much of the single player on my own yet, but even in the beginning I could see how it was a bit of a different experience with the level layouts and it was definitely more streamlined with less emphasis on the story stuff. We had friendly fire on which lead to occasional “mistakes”, but it was a blast. It actually works VERY well as a co-op game. I’m looking forward to trying it again orr even taking it online to do the same. Woo hoo!

That’s lame, I would have taken a lot less damage if that move was included. Fun demo, though. I would like to have the LE edition of the full game with the shiny tin and extra disc.

There’s no extra disc. All the extra stuff comes on the game disc in an extras section on the main menu.

I’ve been a little disappointed in the game, truth be told. It’s not awful or anything, and it definitely has a nice sense of horror to it, but it just isn’t as fun to play as other FPS games I’ve tried. For one thing, the AI is amazingly straightforward. Once in a blue moon you’ll run into an enemy that will use cover as a rudimentary tactic, but even that just feels kind of scripted.

I haven’t really played online much. I tried once, and it felt like the game essentially turned into a “race for the rocket launcher” contest over and over.

At this point I wish I had just rented the game and spent my cash on Splinter Cell instead.

Really enjoying this one.

Basically since getting hooked on Halo, every new multiplayer FPS has disapointed me, except to an extent Timesplitters 2, and to a lesser extent Timesplitters: Future Perfect(they didn’t expand it enough for my tastes, and it’s a tad glitchy). DOOM 3’s deathmatch just sucks in my opinion. I still have yet to figure out how the “warm up” works, for one. Another thing is, yes everyone runs for the rocket launcher, and not being able to get to know the maps in split screen(haven’t tried system link) makes it impossible for me to know where anything is, even though the maps are small. It’s really frustrating, then to add insult to injury, the people on LIVE talk a lot of smack.
Co-op in my experience(on LIVE and system link) is sweet. I love it, but then again I love the single player game too.
I don’t even care about the lack of a melee hit with weapons. The flashlight works well enough on zombies, and anything bigger than that shouldn’t really be affected by a smack of a gun anyways, except maybe the imps and spiders).
I read that the PC expansion pack may be coming this summer via LIVE downloads, I wonder how much that will cost? Free maybe? Hahahahahaha I can dream.

I finally started playing Doom this past weekend. Man, I’m a wimp. I started off playing this on my 5.1 surround on the big TV and ended up taking it into the bedroom with just the plain stereo sound (and smaller screen). AND forget about playing this game before bed. I don’t remember jumping so many times and being so creeped out while playing a video game.

The plasma gun? Nice but annoying as hell how fast the charges get shot.

Finally beat it last night (long game, and I only played it sporadically) and loved the whole thing, I just wish the two biggest bosses weren’t also the two easiest.

They should be making more X-box games that look like this, not ditching the system.

I picked this up again this weekend…and promptly put it back down when I kept on getting my ass handed to me by those demons with the rocket launchers on their shoulder. I think I had saved with my health too low and no health nearby. :frowning: I hate having to backtrack.

Use the plasma rifle on them, the shots blow up the rockets they fire at you and take the guys down quick.

Anyone heard anything about Doom III: Resurrection of Evil? I assume this is the console version of the PC expansion? Worth picking up?
