I have to admit…the Martha character has been growing on me since halfway through season two. She consistantly shows a grace and strength that makes you believe a man like Bullock would agree to marry her.
And Al’s last three minutes this week was simple fantastic. Going from a condemnation of his whore’s fellatio technique to a faded memory from his past, and his response to her words…proves again that McShane ain’t making enough money on this series.
His blowjob monologues are always great.

-The face-off between Hearst and Tolliver near the end of episode 3 rocked. Hearst is a total piece of shit, and I’m enjoying every bit of McRaney’s performance.
-Brian Cox. The guy’s gold, and he makes this shit work. When he and McShane are both onscreen, it’s grand.
-Steve and Hostetler - Definitely tedious, but I’m glad that they’re making the effort to tie up that part of the Deadwood storyline. Sucks that they spend almost a whole episode on it, but if they hadn’t done so, I’d bet dollars to donuts that someone, somewhere would be bitching about it.
The Steve/Hostetler story worked for me not because of them but because of Bullock. That’s who that arc was really about, and Olyphaunt was absolutely great.
I agree with Poxy on this, for the most part. Bullock never seemed more on the brink of it when he did when dealing with this issue. And, yet, again, it was Saul that kept him on path. I thought the Steve - Hostettler bar confrontation was really well done, by the way.
My main problem with the Hostetler/Steve storyline was that it was an important moment for Bullock - to contain his anger and resolve it peacefully in order to not tarnish William’s memory by letting the situation get out of hand…but too many moments were played for laughs with all of the “I won’t sign until he does” and Bullock’s back and forth errands. That bar scene was a powerful moment. The actors who play Hostetler and Steve did a good job - plus it can’t be easy doing a racially charged scene like that. I just wish the storyline had been handled a little better.
Tonight’s fight was great. I laughed my butt off with the eyeball thing. It looked great, but struck me funny for some reason. Overall, I thought that it was a really good episode.

I like how Al still talks to the Indian’s head in the box.
I thought Dan was a goner there for a second.
Hearst seems incredibly powerful at times, and then sometimes, he doesn’t. His charcter (and the other’s fear or trepidation towards him) puzzles me. But then again, I’ve been avoiding reading about the town’s history so I don’t know a lot about his character.
Shitty way to go, but sweet christ if I was Hostetler I might have done the same thing, Steve the drunk gives Dom on Entourage a run for worst character on HBO right now, so obnoxious.
When that cabinet opened I knew what Al was going for, and I love it. I knew that fight was coming and I knew the end, but damn if it wasn’t tense. And I’m digging how Bullock is becoming alright in the eyes of Al’s underlings.
And am I the only who thinks Molly Parker can sometimes look a total knockout, and then at others be one of the strangest looking women.
That was some amazing television. I can’t believe Hostetler. I kept thinking that he’d bury a rake into Steve’s head but to go like that, just terrible. Brian Cox is gold. I’m just sorry that he & McShane didn’t get any scenes together this time.

Hearst is the “bill Gates” of his day. He is also father of Randolph Hearst(Citizen Kane). If you want to understand the Hearst character with out giving anything away from the Deadwood story read up on the Comstock Lode and Virginia City.

That was my first thought when he appeared.
That fight was something else and even though the eye popping out scene is the most graphic what stood out for me was Al. When Dan was getting his face buried in the mud Al just put his eyes down knowing that was it for Dan and then when he managed to get out of that situation Al raised his eyes. Also liked how after the fight was over Al simply flicked his toothpick and walked back into his room.
Molly Parker was terrific in this episode and the way she was with her husband and him figuring out what was going on was priceless. I have a feeling that Alma might wind up dead or destitute.
Oh and I finally caught up with this season thanks to OnDemand. It is turning out to be my favorite of the series.
Goddamn but that Dority/Captain battle was the best monster fight this side of Toho. And on that note, one my favorite lines was Dan calling him “that sea-creature Turner.”
The direction in this whole episode was over the bar even for Deadwood standards. I’m especially thinking of the two scenes you mention, Eileen, meaning Al’s and Hearst’s silent parts during the fight scene, and the Ellsworths. Just phenonemal work.

Awesome fight but I can’t watch it again. Sorry but I am a total wimp when it comes to brutal stuff (now if they would have left out the eye incident I could watch it several times)
I think it was the sound of the eye gouge that was, for me, the sickening part. The act itself wasn’t actually shown onscreen, right, just the aftermath?
Would’ve been great if the fight went 20 or 30 rounds like the old fights.
