Pretty solid episode and I loved how Charlie was being a smart ass to Hearst which is brave considering his reputation. Was it me or were there some hints that Odell might be Hearst’s son? (will be watching a repeat OnDemand later in the week)
Only negative for me was no scenes involving Langrishe or Mr Wu.
From the previews: Now I love the Calamity Jane character but what person in their right mind would want to sleep with her?!?!? Even when she is cleaned up there is the knowledge the woman sleeps in her own piss. Yuck.
This episode was a mixed bag for me. Part of it was excellent (Charlie particularly) but a lot of it was boring. I can’t stand Mrs. Ellsworth and the subplot involving Odell was weak. Maybe it will have a pay off in the end.
They’re spending way too much time on Steve lately. I didn’t mind the episode where Hostetler and the Nigger General came back mainly because we got to see Bulluck running around trying to strike a deal. It was kinda funny seeing him do this because he was in a furious rage but going on and on with Steve’s drunken racist act is growing stale.

:igh:: Forgive me as I had on my Knot’s Landing hat on the first viewing. What it was is I had to watch it twice in order to understand what Aunt Lou was saying at the end (while she was running towards the hotel). She doesn’t want her “beautiful baby” getting mixed up with Hearst because she knows him too well.

I agree. I believe the audience is well aware now that Steve is a druken racist and let’s hope his presence dwindles for the remainder of the season.
I did like the bits with Mrs. Ellsworth mainly because it gave Trixie more TV time.
A side note: From what I have been reading Wyatt Earp will make his appearance in a couple of weeks.
I got the impression they were there at the behest of Hearst. Remember, Wyatt Earp was a mercenary scumbag by some accounts. That looks like the version they’re going with here.
I thought this was the weakest episode this season. There were some good character moments - Sol telling Trixie he would raise a child with her, Alma and Ellsworth’s talk, Blazanov breaking his code of confidentiality for the good of the camp - but overall all it felt like it was just spinning its wheels. Parts of it seemed badly edited, with jarring cuts between shots.
Hopefully next week will pick with the Earp brothers arriving in town. I don’t think Wyatt will be there at Hearst’s request, but his presence will definitely stir some shit up, the way people questioned Wild Bill’s presence in town.

I wish they’d drop Steve The Drunk and his livery storyline. He was fine when he was just a straight-up asshole and threatening, but now it looks like he’s taking Jane’s place as the camp’s loveable drunk and it’s just not working for me. He’s not amusing in any way. I have a hard time liking or working up any sympathy for him after Hostetler’s suicide. For whatever weird reason I can like Al and Dan despite their murderous actions and I can even enjoy watching Hearst and Wolcott, but Steve just pisses me off to no end.
I’ve noticed that also as it appears they are trying to turn Steve’s character around and make him the comedic town drunk but for me it is to late in the game for that. In fact I can’t think of anything he could do that would change my opinion of him.
The only amusing thing to come from Steve this entire season was the irony of him telling Tom to “Look inward, why don’t ya, instead of always blaming the Other?”
I think the guy that plays Steve does a great job. He’s just such a bastard, but so sad too. I don’t mind the focus on him, but I do hope it goes somewhere.
I don’t think they’re pushing anything about Steve as being loveable or comical. Steve is portrayed quite handily as an utterly repugnant drunken failure who blames others for his faults. Had he a wife and childeren he would no doubt beat them.
Tom Nuttal serves as the eyes with which to view Steve. He is disgusted and seems to have had his fill of Steve. Steve seems to have some sort of recognition that he is unpleasant to be around hence his offer to keep Samuel Fields on as a livery hand, but Fields is a savvy sort and rightfully can’t stand Steve himself.
After a strong start this season, the show has really hit a slump these past few episodes. It’s losing focus and characters are drifting in and out of the story. No Alma, Ellsworth, Trixie or Charlie last night. Instead we got more of Langrishe’s theater group that I could not give less of a shit about. Cox is great in the role and I love his scenes with Swearengen, but I wish they had Langrishe arrive solo this season to prepare for the group, that way we could have Langrishe without the accompanying bullshit. Does anyone care about Chesterton? Thank God the fucker died last night so we won’t have to endure any more scenes of him lying in bed and coughing.
There’s been a lot of great stuff this season but it’s definitely the weakest of the three. Hopefully with Hearst’s men now in town the show will start building to some sort of conclusion.
