We’re talking pretty much every major plot point from the series in under eight minutes. Apparently it took the guys over a hundred hours to do it, and it’s pretty great – it’s funny and meta, too. There’s a bit around the three minute mark that had me cackling. You’ll know it when you see it.
New favorite sport - Italian Sumo.
Am I the only person who wanted Janice to fall off the earth from the first episode she showed up and am even more irritated by her now?
That was friggin fantastic. Jersey sumo is something that I had all but given up hope of seeing, but now seems inevitable. Greatness.
Don’t understand all the hate for Janice and this was by far Aida’s best performance.
I read some of the reviews ahead of time and knew the first episode was going to focus on Tony/Carm/Bobby/Janice. Was prepared for so-so and got fantastic instead.
A few other things:
Great beginning … but it seems like they opened a huge can of worms with Bobby (spoilers .. swipe to read):
did anyone else notice the kid ripping part of his shirt off? Nice tie-in with Bobby mentioning DNA testing earlier. If it comes to fruition, I hope they don’t spend the last seven episodes on that side plot.
It’ll be interesting to see how they wrap it up. Can’t wait.

I’ve stayed away from reviews, didn’t want to know how the season started. Loved this episode. The Monopoly scene was epic. I knew it was going to end badly but I had no idea who would start hitting who out of that foursome.
For some reason I don’t think the torn shirt is going to come back on Bobby. That seems like a standard “Sopranos” moment that the audience is sure will be brought up again, but isn’t.
Yeah, that stuff never comes back and the stuff you never expect - like Tony dropping the gun in the snow - is what does come back.
I dunno, the talk of DNA evidence, echoing Sil’s concerns about it when he killed Fat Dom a few eps back, makes me think they’re putting out there for a reason.
I thought this was a solid start. That the show can focus on a weekend with Tony, Carmela, Janice and Bobby and still be this good is a tribute to how strong the characters are and how much real relatable stuff gets mixed in with the fun mob plots. Love that they’re still using the contemplative tone and dream-like scene transitions.
About the Bobby shirt thing, I’d agree it’s nothing if it was just the shirt. The DNA conversation doesn’t even have to be anything, even though most shows would only put that in there to set up something coming of it. But the reason I think there might be more to it is because they took the time to explain that Bobby had never killed anybody-- and it was obvious Tony only sent him to be a prick because of their fight and how that fucked with the insecurities and issues he’s still not able to deal with.
Dropping the gun at the crime scene is how they usually do it. They get a “clean” weapon that’s never been used illegally, use it, then drop it at the scene to both not get caught with a murder weapon in their possession, or to commit future crimes with it that can be linked via ballistic evidence. One-time use only.
A cannolli on the other hand…
There won’t be any consequences from Bobby whacking the canuck. Probably.
Janice continues to annoy the shit out of me, however. (That’s definitely not an insult to Aida Turturro’s acting.)
Is Tony just like AJ, only 10x smarter and raised under harsher conditions? A day of drinking and a game of monopoly are all it takes for his immaturity to be exposed fully? (I don’t buy the “too much to drink” excuse, Bobby must have come close to matching him drink for drink, and in any case he should have disciplined himself better, did anyone see him try to blame Carm for that?)
This episode was fuckin’ superb. Hilarious, very revealing, and it set some good things up for rest of the season.
A great start to the end of the series. The monopoly scene was absolutely perfect.
I loved the bit where Tony and Bobby are driving to meet the Canadians – Bobby looks so sure Tony’s going to whack him. But then Tony does something much worse, making him finally kill somebody. That’s almost worse than if he were to get caught for the hit – it’s like the last vestige of innocence is gone.
The Monopoloy scene was awesome, topped off by a hotel sticking to the side of Tony’s face. When Carm flicked it off, it was just the perfect capper to a perfect scene.
I watched this with friends who were complaining there wasn’t enough killings. They only perked up when Bobby whacked the kid. So sad.
I agree with you Dickson. When Bobby was holding his daughter and just staring out over the lake, you knew the hit really took a toll on him.
Oh, and I was hoping that the show would bring back the duck theme. Tony staring at Nika and her nanny singing the duck song was just great.
Wasn’t that a duck that flew behind Tony when he was staring out at the lake after the fight?
