I finally finished up with the second season and it was extremely compelling viewing. Has there been any discussion as to what the major storylines will be for season 3?
only what the trailers show. Possible dissention thanks to the money train, Wynn as the new chief and David’s rise in the political circles.
Aww Jesus, the wait is awful. I did hold myself back, however. I’m not watching seasons 1 and 2 again until 26 days before season 3. I know I have the willpower…Are the teasers they’re showing on FX the same as the one on the season 2 dvd? If so, why is Shane featured so prominently? What about Danny?

There are two different teaser trailers for season 3.
Danny’s future is in serious doubt for this season based on season 2
I think Danni’s best shot is for Claudette to re-hire her as a detective in training, to eventually take her old position alongside Wagenbach, which was nicely forshadowed in Season 2.
Aside from the on again, off again tension between Dutch and Danni (my how the tables have turned), it would give her a way to strike back at Vic. Speaking of role reversals, it would also be a nice twist seeing her as Dutch’s student, after spending the last two seasons mentoring Julian.
The award-winning, gritty police-drama The Shield is the only current TV series I’m watching (2nd season on the Global network, Sundays at 10:00pm ET). For those who are easily offended by language and violence, etc. this isn’t intended for you, but for those who are looking for a kickass cop show - this is it!
It’s a pity they toned down Mackey after he killed the rookie, making him more sympathetic and unlike the character that would actually commit that crime.
I still love the show to bits. It’s up there with Six Feet Under and The Sopranos.

I don’t think he was toned down at all. But if you shoot a cop every week, it gets a little less shocking each time and would become downright boring. You wouldn’t shoot a cop every week, no matter how bad ass you think you are.
He’s still capable of doing that. He went to kill Amadillio with the team. But the point is that it was done for a reason, to be more than shocking. It strained the relationship for him with Acevada, it had Gilroy breathing down his neck, Danny was mistrustful of him and Shane almost had a mental breakdown. It wasn’t like it was supposed to be ONLY a momentary shock. It had shockwaves that lasted well into the first season and beyond.
The show would lose steam quick if Mackey was killing cops every few weeks. One of the best aspects of the show is that you find yourself really liking and rooting for this guy and then you’ll stop for second and say to yourself, “Wait a minute, this guy killed a cop in cold blood.”
He does a lot of bad things but really feels he is doing them for the better good.
Even killing the cop. He felt it was better for him and his men to be on the streets stopping the scum and knew this cop was sent in to bring him down. He killed the cop to protect his team. That does not make it right. It was as wrong as anything the criminals do, but he believed it was all for the better cause.
that’s the difference. he believes he is doing right.
I don’t think Mackey should be killing cops every week. Of course not. But he killed one cop (not for noble reasons, IMO) and I think that since then they had to make the character more sympathetic, resulting in a character that I don’t believe could do such a thing. I think that was the one weak point in the writing.
What about when he’s getting payoffs from drug dealers? What about when he and Carl Weathers were gonna go take Fleetwoods warehouse and fence it and then split the profits? What about the money train? How is all that doing good? Even he must know that even though he puts some scum away, he’s doing just as worse. This stuff isn’t dirty harry where he’s crossing the line to help the public out in his own vigiliante way. He and his team put away scum so that they THEMSELVES can profit from it, so THEY can control the drugs on the streets. In effect, they are the at the top of a mini mafia.
Oh yeah, I love this show.

I really don’t think they are putting away the scum so they can profit from it. I think they are putting away the sum because it is the right thing to do.
Then, they take a little off the top (which makes them criminals, too. I don’t condone this). But the money is for their “retirement” fund because they know they won’t last, and they’ll get shut down sooner than later and want to make sure they are financially set when it happens.
BUT
I don’t think the money is the reason they are stopping the scum.

Agreed.
Personally, I don’t mind them taking money for themselves. For what happens when they weren’t watching over the drug dealers, look at the whole Amadillo mess. Way I see it, drug dealers are gonna deal anyway, so why not just have Vic enforce rules on them? You didn’t see his dealers spreading heroin to grade school.
He does this stuff because its right, I believe, and he also understands that there’s always gonna be crime, you will never wipe it out totally, and certainly not by sticking to the flimsy ass rules cops usually have…so he just works with it.
The good work he does, by whatever means, in my opinion he deserves a little of that money.
I just like playing devil’s advocate where Vic is involved. I root for him too, but vigiliante police officiers always give my pause. These are guys sworn to enforce the law. They are the line between order and chaos and if that line itself IS chaos, then society has much to worry about.

I see a difference between being corrupt, beating up suspects and making a profit (something I know I’d do if I was a cop) and killing a rookie cop to save your own skin. He murdered one of his own, and I don’t see that kind of killer in the Mackey that adores his kid and shows a sensitive side towards other people quite frequently throught the series.
To me it is like they turned down the badness level several notches as soon as they had writen this shock scene for the pilot.

I couldn’t disagree with you more. He can’t kill a cop everyday. That was just an extreme measure he had to take. He felt that he was being pushed and that was the ONLY way he could push back. And I think that’s the point. By showing his lesser crimes, you see that killing a cop ISN’T something he does everyday. It was kind of a hook to drag you in and say, “See? We’re different. We’re gonna fuck with your perceptions.”
If he had done that mid season, would you still have the same problem? Is it because it’s the very first episode? Or is it just the fact that he capped another cop?
I had a friend who almost stopped watching after that. I had to convince him to give it a go. He still found the character repulsive, but understood him better after the season had progressed.
I don’t exactly have moral issues with watching and liking a character who murdered a fellow officer. I wouldn’t really care if he fucked a child in the first episode, to be honest. But I just felt that it was something of a gimmick and it kind of mislead me into thinking that the character of Mackey would be worse than he turned out to be. Later in the series he makes moral choices that seem out of place coming from a man who did that.
No offense, man, but I think you missed the whole point.
Anyway, on shieldfans.com, I saw a bobble head figure of the Shield’s Vic Mckay…
is this real or a custom job? Where can I get one?
