The Expanse - Syfy

Officially starts in December, but Syfy put the first episode up on Youtube a couple days ago

I’m on board. I’m unfamiliar with the books, but this looks like it’ll finally fill the Battlestar Galactica shaped hole in my TV sci-fi, and hey, Tom Jane in a thing again.

Looks pretty good, and I like the cast. The fact that it’s a SyFy production dims my excitement, though. I don’t think I’ve particularly liked anything they’ve done outside the Battlestar Galactica universe.

EDIT: Oh! I thought that was the trailer I’d already seen, but it’s a full episode. Will give it a watch later!

AIt’s definitely a step in the right direction if they want to get back to being more SciFi than Syfy.

I was already IN because of the books (which are pretty damned great), but that pilot episode hit all of the right notes for me. Loved it. I’m totally on board with great enthusiasm now.

AThe dreaded “This video is not available in you country” but this has Thomas Jane playing a shady P.I. in some kind of mysterious space horror show right? How could I not be in for this.

Not only that, but Jane was knocking it out of the park in the footage that I watched. He’s gonna fucking OWN this in a major way.

Finally got around to watching this and was quite impressed, not only because it didn’t look like your typical cheap SyFy show and the acting was pretty decent, but because it actually seems to be fairly well written. It’s obviously hard to judge a show based on just one episode, but this definitely left me wanting more which a lot of pilots fail to do.

AHow did you watch it, Saxon? Can’t find it on UK Youtube.

Just watched this…not bad.

Good production values, writing, acting…interesting story/world building.

I’m interested to see where it’s headed. Hopefully, the quality will remain consistent.

I have the ProxFlow extension on my Chrome, so I no longer get those annoying “It’s not available in your country” messages on Youtube. Watched it right here on good ol’ CHUD!

For those of you who have read the series and seen the pilot, I heard they mixed a lot of book one and book two into the first “season”.. I’ve only read the first book. Should I try to finish the second before watching the pilot?

AI’ve been wowed. That was some good shit, Maynard.

I second that. It’s been a long time since there’s a been hard science fiction on TV and that first episode was the bee’s knees.

I’m in.

AOne thing I loved was the large crack in Jane’s character’s phone-thingy. That one little detail went a long way in establishing versimilitude for me.

I really dig the opening credits as well.

I read the books and liked (but not loved) them.

Only Battlestar has really shone for me in terms of its effects on Syfy. This looks…okay. Too much exposition for my liking, although that might have been unavoidable.

That said, small things like the cracked phone and lots of skinny, lanky people helped sell the idea of this used world. I thought the hovering bird was pretty cool, too.

Hi, Jonathan Banks! Bye, Jonathan Banks!

For me that intro scene was a wasted opportunity. Perhaps the series wants to keep what’s going on really mysterious, but while the book’s opening was the same scene, the way it was described was really unnerving.

AI’ve found myself mumbling “Veek beltah bohns” way too much since Monday.

3rd episode- maintaining pretty good level of drama, production value and writing.

I’m digging this more and more, although I do sometimes wish there were subtitles.

Also… we get to see Lane Pryce and Windom Earle show up. : )

I was just coming on here to talk after watching the first 4 episodes that are out. For those that don’t know, the first 4 episodes are On Demand for cable and at Syfy’s website. Each new episode makes me like this show more and more. There’s an especially shocking death in the 4th episode that made me smile

The detail being put towards the differences between the societies from each location is great. I got the impression that they’re saying that Mars is Communist, even if they never call it that. I remember reading in another sci-fi book about a future Martian society that was Communist. The show keeps expanding the overall world/perspective each episode but it doesn’t feel like we’re about to be overwhelmed with too much stuff.

Here’s a question: how would chewers line up in the show’s societies, Earther / Martian / OPA? Put me down for OPA since I’m a sucker for the underdog.

Now let me go see if The Magicians will be worth any my time.
