I have the 7th season to watch yet, but I kind of did a drawn out marathon of the first 6 seasons. It surprises me this show was ever any sort of hit, and maybe that’s because the show would not work today. It’s both fun and mean-spirited all at once. Audiences today seem to like one or the other. Anything in between often hits with a thud and disinterest.
Either way, I had only seen a few episodes in the past. It has been mostly fun. The actors that show up blows my mind. Sometimes the shittiest B-rate actor will play lead while a near A-list hams up a supporting role. Even amidst mixed quality, I think these people just let loose and had fun with each other. They are all doing the same job regardless of skill level or exposure.
I will have zero desire to revisit the show once I have watched it through, but it is amusing to me for now.
There’s a third movie. It’s in my netflix queue, but I am terrified to watch. I am confused whether it’s legit TftC material.
Good points though. I have 'Zone waiting in my queue. Been years since I have seen it. I loved horror shows in my youth but I am terrified to revisit anything other than TZ.
TftC needed the same love and reverence paid to Creepshow I think.
The third movie, Ritual, I don’t recall being that bad. Its mediocre in that special way where you forget everything that just happened as the credits roll. The only thing I remember about the movie is that it has the cheap crypt keeper from the DVD menus. I think one of the reasons Tales From the Crypt was really big back in the day was the kiddies. I was 8 when the show premiered and its one of my favorite shows of all time, warts and all. For a lot of us growing up in the 80s horror was all around us with Freddy and Jason and slashers in general being cultural phenomenons, it was largely a nice middle ground between hardcore horror and stuff that was just too softcore like Goosebumps. Revisiting Tales as an adult, the show has a much higher failure rate than I recall, but its still the best horror anthology show ever made in my opinion.
In terms of not drawing a lot of big horror talent, I’ll agree, but a lot of the names listed above did have involvement in Tales from the Darkside, and personally I’d rather watch a bad episode of Crypt than a good episode of Darkside.
I’ve been in love with that cop (Burke Byrnes) since I saw him make that face! There is a great shot of him in The Falcon and the Snowman and he is just dreamy.
