Damn, Darkwatch is another one I remember liking but I’m having a hard time remembering any specifics (cue: “I’ve wasted my life!” clip). I grew up with PC before getting into consoles during college, and for a while I was going to garage sales and just buying up stacks of Xbox and PS2 games to see what I’d missed. I remember being pleasantly surprised by that one, but I think Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath is the better entry in the “Western-ish” FPS console niche. I also really liked Desperadoes (the sequels…not so much) so I may have to check out Hard West.
Yeah, Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath slipped my mind when it came to Weird West games.
And didnt Darkwatch had a good/bad morality sistem based on a demon/angel playmate looking girls thing/mechanic?
Hard West is, like i said, good, but it has its flaws. I enjoyed, personally.
But in retrospective (and the experience3 at the time of release), I think Lucasart’s Outlaws was my favorite western game until RDR arrived.
Visually and gameplay wise it was just ok for the time, but it was the animated cutscenes/story (Dr. Death was one creepy bastard of a villain, and his demise is the best scene in the game) and that bloody brilliant soundtrack that is such an evocation of Morricone that elevated the game for me.
Loved Gun. Bit short but a few memorable sequences, particularly the riverboat rescue, and a great score. Also, blowing people up with the exploding arrows.
AHonestly, that sequence riding into Mexico as Jose Gonzales plays is the most incredible gaming moment I’ve ever experienced. Just stunning beyond words.
Yeah, I think I just came to Outlaws too late because while I appreciated those elements, it definitely felt really dated, which is kind of crazy considering it came out just a year before Half-Life. That said, I actually went to Wikipedia to see if there was some big game we were overlooking: Nope! It really does seem like there’s a crazy dearth of Western games.
EDIT: Oh, forgot to add, great box as well, that was a cool one to have on the shelf back before I divested myself of worldly belongings. You know, physical ones. Digital hoarding is so much easier!
AAlong with Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, I would also recommend the older - but very good - Call of Juarez Bound in Blood. It probably doesn’t play as smoothly as Gunslinger, but it tells a pretty good tale of two brothers in the old west.

Also amazing that Outlaw was the first FPS to have a sniper zoom. Did not know that.

Also, even when I like the flawed 13th Warrior, on a better world Eaters of the Dead would had been adapted as an R Rated epic in the 80s
ALooking over this thread, I realize I may have played every video game about the West outside of Custer’s Revenge.
Aside from RDR, I gotta go with Outlaws.
