Pokemon Go- Damn, They Ruined a Cashcow Didn't They?

A[quote name=“HypnoToad” url=“/community/t/155656/pokemon-go-shut-up-you-know-youre-playing-it/50#post_4100977”]Thinking about the Ghostbusters game from a few years ago in another thread, it hit me that this would be a perfect game for Ghostbusters to rip-off/expand on.

A Ghostbusters mobile game where you have to catch augmented reality ghosts. They could have a PKE feature for tracking them and some kind of accelerometer game for wrangling them.Once sufficiently wrangled, you can do the poke-ball throw thing to throw out a trap.

Might be a nice alternative for people who didn’t grow up with Pokemon, but would like to blindly run into traffic.

Can we get a version where you have no ghostbusting equipment, and the ghosts brick your phone if they chase you down and catch you?

This is how civilization ends. Not with a zombie apocalypse but with a goddamn app.

Po-tay-to / po-tah-to

So edgy I nearly cut myself.

Yeah, we’ve been raping and killing each other for millennia and still do to this day but this GOSHDARN POKE MONGO is just a step too far!

No attachment to Pokemon, but downloaded on a whim anyway to see what all the fuss was about. The turtle one was in my shower, which I found funny, but after a few minutes of trying and failing to figure out the "catching’ method, gave up. So, latest fad experienced, enjoy guys.

I caught the three-step glitch, so the game is pretty well fucked. Still having fun wandering around hatching eggs and leveling up, but any time I see a new silhouette or a rare monster, there’s no real way for me to catch it. I can get one to the first slot on the tracker, but after that, there’s no way to tell which direction to go. I either give up, or the thing disappears and “moves on”.

Anyone know if the tracker and the rustling leaves have any correlation? Maybe I can start bee-lining it to leaves, whenever something comes up on my tracker.

Rustling leaves are spawn points for what I have read. One is guaranteed to show up every hour or so. But I don’t think thy’re related to the tracker.

I quit looking at the tracker a long time ago. No pokemon ever gets below three paw prints and often times I’ll have a pokemon suddenly show up that wasn’t even on the list. I’ll just typically pick a route to walk or run and catch whatever shows up.

AThe last update broke the tracker. Paw prints are meaningless until they fix them. You can still somewhat triangulate based upon which line and column the Pokemon is in.

Don’t Drive and Go

I apologize in advance as I haven’t read the last 90 posts so if this has already been brought up…

This whole PokemanGo thing seems like it will soon be co-opted by big businesses (if it hasn’t already) as a some huge marketing tool to drive people to retail businesses.

“Coming soon…the limited edition P-Go characters that you can only find in the frozen food aisle of the local WalMart store…?!”

“Quick…you have to visit your nearest McDonalds to get the special Grimace Pokeman…”

Has this already been discussed?

ETA- I guess it has.

Pokemon GO could be next big marketing tool for retailers

AI did link and joke about some things about the ‘pokeconomy’ earlier in the thread.

There are definitely businesses (and churches) adopting this kind of thing to lure more foot traffic.

I walked by a bar that advertised that they were a pokestop (or whatever) during earlier times in the day.

But I can definitely see major outlets taking that kind of thing further.

McDonald’s is the first game sponsor. Over 3000 locations in Japan will be paid Pokestops.

Their internal marketing got leaked and Japan has to wait a little longer because of it.

*EDIT* RazerGo chat app for talking to nearby Pokemon Go players.

Postpone Pokemon Go in Japan forever, please.

When this game hits Japan, the servers are going to literally turn into pools of molten metal.

Are all countries working off the ‘same’ servers?

I don’t know how ingress and all that worked.

All I know is that Pokemon Go launched in 20+ new countries this past weekend, and the entire global network saw significant server downtime.

woof!

For some reason, I thought the location-specific nature of the game meant that load of data going back and forth was compartmentalized by region somehow. Like, I didn’t even think about it like that. That’s just an assumption that I made up in my head because I don’t know anything about how this kind of thing works.

I don’t think they planned that far ahead. I wish they had, since I just found THIS, and the servers are currently down. It’s a tracker that uses the game developer’s API to show you where Pokemon are in any chosen area. It’s supposedly very accurate.

Normally, I’d say this is cheating, but with the in-game tracker having been disabled for over a week… I don’t mind getting the same amount of exercise and fresh air with less of the frustration.

One would think but last Thursday killed the game for almost two whole days because of the server load.
