All my slap bracelets have Frozen characters on them. Is this okay.
I think I will pass.
Speaking of the Pokeconomy… I am about to buy a portable phone power bank just to keep the kids from having their devices run down as they are powercycling the shit out of their iPod Touches.
Also, Pokemon Go might auger in the return of swappable batteries for smart phones again. This shit is ridiculous.
Don’t they know we voted out of this shit? Just say no to the little foreign fuckers.
Oh shit… it is on now. Hopefully I can get the gazebo in the greenspace across from my house listed as a stop.

Being the old fart that I am, Pokemon was never in my nerdy radar since I was already all “Growed up” when it came out. My daughters on the other hand are obsessed. As soon as the game came out the oldest begged for me to approve her download. For some reason it wouldn’t work unless i downloaded on my phone. I was away at the time so I downloaded and started farting around with it. Now being the competitive and annoying father that I am, I have to make sure that I’m always at least 1 level above her and 10+ Pokemon more than her at all times just to mess with her. Pikachu was caught early and the game responded by crashing as it seems to always do when I catch a good Pokemon. My wife just keeps shaking her head as I try to find Pokestops in the barren wasteland of my neighborhood.
Reddit users bare all in their search for Pokemon.
Thinking about the Ghostbusters game from a few years ago in another thread, it hit me that this would be a perfect game for Ghostbusters to rip-off/expand on.
A Ghostbusters mobile game where you have to catch augmented reality ghosts. They could have a PKE feature for tracking them and some kind of accelerometer game for wrangling them.Once sufficiently wrangled, you can do the poke-ball throw thing to throw out a trap.
Might be a nice alternative for people who didn’t grow up with Pokemon, but would like to blindly run into traffic.
You lost me with the poke ball.
Is this game really just some nostalgia trip for a cartoon from people’s childhood? I can’t imagine myself snooping around in some bushes for a Bugs Bunny or Daffy Duck in order to battle Elmer J. Fudd.
I think it is more nostalgia for the card game which predated the cartoon. Sort of like if Magic The Gathering(maybe they do, I don’t know) suddenly had a mobile game that required you to go out and about. Or any table-top game managed to utilize just the right aspects of technology at the right time to create a phenomenon.

we are a strange species
We totally are. We fight wars and kill each other over myths and fairy tales, shoot each other in the streets for money or shoes or a nice hat.
But everyone comes together peacefully and has fun chasing creatures in a cellphone game.
By the way, Islamic leaders in Egypt have forbidden playing Pokemon Go. Go figure.
Dullzilla is so-so!
nyah nyah!
God, the amount of media stories on this are insane. You can’t buy this kind of advertising.
Have to say, it’s hooked me pretty hard. Did a walk this morning, aiming to cut through the University Campus where there are a load of pokestops (it was shut off annoyingly due to some event). Just popped out to walk around my estate to get the last km on an egg I was hatching (Magmar! yay!). Already downloaded the Ingress game to figure out where the best concentration of pokestops are and where the Pokemon are likely to spawn.
Mind you, still got some sense of decorum. When the university tour was a bust, I thought I’d head out to my nearest Gym, cut through the cemetery (and put the phone away as I did it). Then, realized rather queasily the actual gym location is simply an elaborate gravestone for “Mum & Dad”. Decided it probably wasn’t the done thing to claim that one. ![]()
ATried it out for about 20 minutes the other night. Walked around my neighborhood for about 1/2 hour catching whatever the hell they are called.
Meh. Not for me.
However, I think the concept is FANTASTIC and it’s so awesome to see people out and about. I’ve seen so many more kids and families out than I used to over the past 2 weeks. And they are very clearly playing this game. Having said that, please BE SAFE. Especially kids.
I still don’t understand the detractors for this game. With all of the bullshit in the world today it’s nice people can still get lost in something and have fun.
AWent downtown again last night for dinner. While there we walked Main St. down to the capitol building. Our Statehouse grounds has about 10-12 Pokestops and a gym and you can just walk the perimeter hitting them all over and over. There were easily 50+ people out there and three of the stops perpetually had lures. I caught two I didn’t have and had a Lucky Egg going so in the 30+ minutes we were there I went up an entire level. Managed nearly three miles on a couple of incubating eggs.
Occasionally the night would ring out with someone declaring their team and there might be some who would respond in the affirmative or someone would playfully call back one of the other teams. “INSTINCT REPRESENT!”
Some frat boy douchebag started ranting about how he “caught them! Caught them all!.” Then let everyone know he was level 2. That got a good laugh.
Parents with kids, couples, roaming packs of teens, twenty or so folk just sitting on the steps.
Apparently there is also a local Facebook group that has people gathering after 10 and they’ve been having parties of a sort on the grounds. Someone posted about how much fun they had “except for that guy who only baked cookies for Team Mystic.”
The one thing I noticed that was a bit of a let down is that even with all those people there everyone was still face down in their phones ignoring the majority of the folks around them. The game needs to implement trading so the social aspect could really jump to the next level.
AWent to the mall and there were at least 15 pokestops and my son kept asking everyone on their phones if they were playing Pojemon Go. Their answer 100% of the time was yes.
Well, that’s easy to explain. Everyone knows how the Pokemon and the Pokestops are set up in this game right?
Niantic made a game a few years ago called “Ingress”. It basically involved people wandering around on two sides controlling points on the map and collecting energy. Users could submit their own points of interest for the game, taking a photo and a description.
Pokemon Go is basically Ingress. I don’t just mean ‘they adapted the concept’, it’s the same fucking game. Using the Google/Apple maps API (so no work there), the battle points became Pokestops and the dots of energy around the map became Pokemon spawn points. They had users building this game up for them. It’s why some of the pokestops are a year or so out of date (one of the ones in my town centre is a shopping mall entrance that was demolished about 18 months ago).
Ingress was only mildly popular though, so it’s likely that it swayed more towards the WASP/Urban population, hence why a lot of places are missing. They’ll fix that. They already have a ‘suggest new pokestops’ page up and running. Probably reskinning the ‘suggest new Ingress point’ page. ![]()
Still, if you sign up for Ingress with your google account, you can access the map online Ingress which will help you track down good concentrations of Pokestops.
If you fire up the App as well you can see little blue dots around the map - more of them clustered together, more likely there is to be a pokemon around. Not that it will help as using both apps at once means your phone battery will last about 45 seconds.
EDIT: Which is of course mentioned in the article Nooj linked. My bad!
I think that’s the first time I’ve seen it referenced in mainstream news. Didn’t even think to check.
