AOh if only he was black…
On one hand I don’t want judge Bieber too harshly. There is a good chance I would be a tool to if I had that much money and fame at a young age. However I despise that kind of music and wish a record label would push a rock band, Halestrom, Foxy Shazam, and Ghost BC for instance, instead of his crap. I say: NO TRIAL!! LIFE IN GITMO!!!
Not buying it. People loathe Bieber, and his ilk. The entitled rich are (thankfully) getting a ton of negative attention as of late. The element of racism makes the reaction to Sherman particularly ugly, but it’s disingenuous for whoever made that graphic to act like there aren’t just as many, if not more people who think there’s more wrong with Bieber’s biebhavior than Sherman’s.
I think the deeper point is about being so quick to label Sherman a typical black stereotype reserved for the worst of black society. There is nothing thuggish about Sherman, yet that was what sprang to many people’s minds after seeing his incredibly brief interview.
Whereas with Beiber…even though his actions are far more damning than Sherman’s, most are not calling Beiber a “thug” even though his actions and behavior are much closer in line to that description than Sherman’s.
It may not be a perfect example, but the poster has an interesting point behind it I think.
Yeah, I’m with Ambler on this one.
There’s no question the speed with which Sherman was labeled a thug and worse is troubling, as is the way that word is currently being used in our culture. I just think that graphic lays it on a little thick when it seems to state Bieber is predominantly labeled as a “misguided kid.” I think a lot of people see him as a lot worse than that. But we should absolutely reevaluate the use of words like thug and gangster.
True. Yet while thug and gangster definitely have a racial connotation, no one could ever label Beiber a thug. He would get his ass whopped by his coffee maker, never mind a Girl Scout, a Nun, or Lady Thatcher’s risen corpse. Thug implies the ability to hurt someone. I have been in one fight in my entire life, wear glasses and a bow tie, and teach literature, but I would be more likely to be labeled thuggish than Bieber.
Your point is well taken, but Bieber may well be a thug. Thug implies an intimidating criminal, and for all we know Bieber uses his status and wealth to intimidate and bully. That’s part of the problem. Rich thugs are often overlooked because of the way they dress, and/or the color of their skin; as well as their methods of intimidation and corruption.
If Sherman had done everything Justin Bieber did, he’d be in jail, shot (for resisting arrest) or deported (if he was Canadian like Bieber). I agree with Ambler. This racist-tinged demonizing goes on across every level of society, not just celebrity.
The right-wing-hate-machine latched on to the Beiber story immediatley. Limbaugh was blathering about ‘the media’ picking on this poor kid, when Obama still exists. Sherman too.
ARE YOU SHITTING ME. He actually went for “leave poor Beiber alone when there are real monsters like Obama and Sherman out there”?
ABiebers actions threatened lives, there’s no way that’s worse than Sherman being excited after a big win. Richard Sherman is 10x the man that Beiber can even hope to be.
I thought you meant Limbaugh was saying the media should be focusing on Obama, not Beiber and Sherman. But if he was saying… well, I guess he was just being typical racist Rush, wasn’t he? It shouldn’t shock me.
By the way, apparently Beiber and Limbaugh share criminal defense attorneys, so no bias there, or anything. (Also file under things that shouldn’t surprise me.)
10 x 0= 0, though.
Yep.
