It seems kind of baffling that after the absolutely abysmal performance of Morbius that Disney would decide that Leto is actually the right person to be working with to try to bring Tron back a second time. Especially when Joseph Kosinski’s just come off the biggest box office hit of 2022.
The only thing that feels like ‘good’ news in this is that it sounds like it actually is going to be a sequel to Tron: Legacy instead of a soft reboot or sidequel that ignores Legacy’s existence.
Surprised it sounds like they might not be bring Joseph Kosinski back. It seemed he was interested in doing more Tron, and I was thinking he was still attached when talk of another Tron popped back up in 2019 or whatever that was.
Kosinski hasn’t been involved since 2015. He’d wanted to do a sequel with Sam & Quorra as the leads, a bigger role for Tron, and the father/son Dillinger team (David Warner & Cillian Murphy) as the baddies. For whatever reason, that iteration of TRON 3 was tossed eight years ago and this Jared Leto-centric one replaced it in 2017. Then, to make matters worse, David Warner has died in the interim and Daft Punk has disbanded.
Joachim Ronning is our TRON: ARES director. The likes of KON-TIKI, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5, and BANDIDAS are fine, I guess? I never bothered with MALEFICENT 2. But even if the script for this is aces (doubtful), he’s not the kind of strong visualist that this movie needs.
I’m assuming that neither Garrett Hedlund nor Olivia Wilde are retained for this, nor is Cillian Murphy brought back either. Best guess? It’s a mostly standalone entry that quietly acknowledges LEGACY, but mostly does its own thing. If we’re lucky, we at least get Bruce Boxleitner back as Alan Bradley/Tron, but I’m not holding my breath.
This is gonna be the Jared Leto show and will probably end up being a very bland reboot.
It’s amazingly perverse how Disney’s motivation to pursue a third film increases in inverse proportion to the number of factors that point towards it being any damn good at all. I can only assume that when we finally get the Black Hole remake, it’ll only be because Kevin Spacey wants to use it as a comeback vehicle or Imagine Dragons is looking for a soundtrack gig or something.
They’re opening a new Tron coaster at Disney World so they have to keep more content coming. This seems like the most boring way to go about it, though.
This franchise should’ve been de-rezzed after LEGACY. The best thing about LEGACY was the soundtrack and getting a sweet glow in the dark FLYNN’S ARCADE t-shirt out of it.
I will not be inserting a coin to continue this particular game.
I rode the Tron coaster last month. Very brief, but fun. Plus when you get your picture of yourself riding the coaster it’s been photoshopped so it looks like you’re just riding a an individual lightcycle, not part of a train of of cars.
