Inspired by the It’s HALLOWEEN! thread, post any favorite Christmas/holiday films (popular or otherwise), TV Christmas/holiday Specials (just no Hallmark shit), Christmas/holiday music and any other odds and ends that get you into the holiday spirit (or at least did when you were a kid).
It doesn’t matter if you celebrate or not, just anything that reminds you of those cold and snowy Decembers (or warm and sunny depending on where you are).
My family’s Christmas movie is The Muppet Christmas Carol. We used to sit down and watch it as a family every year. I can quote the whole thing back to front, and I love it to death. With the exception of one terrible song in the middle, it’s great from start to finish, and Michael Caine is fantastic as Scrooge. It’s the best post-Henson Muppet film by a longshot, and it warms my heart every time I see it.
As a side note, my sister married a Honduran man this year who has 3 kids. We just learned this week that they were all able to get visas, so they’re able to come spend Christmas with us here in the States. I’m beyond excited already, but this thread just reminded me that I’ll get to introduce my new little nephews and niece to Muppet Christmas Carol and carry on a Christmas tradition, and that just makes me smile.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to go watch all the songs from this movie.
AIt’s not even summer here yet and it’s already averaging 100 degrees here. I HATE the heat and, especially, the humidity. I’ve only had one snowy Christmas and, awful as it may sound, even though it was the first time I spent the holidays away from my family, it was my favourite Christmas ever.
I really dislike “The Love is Gone”. That may just be a holdover from when I was a kid and it seemed sappy and boring and interrupted all the fun Muppet action. It might be a perfectly fine song, but adult me can’t separate it from kid me’s perception of it.
First, I have good news for you. That song isn’t actually part of the movie. It’s only on full screen home video releases and wasn’t actually part of the theatrical film, nor is it in the widescreen version.
Second, I disliked it as a child as well, but in hindsight, watching the movie without it makes that section of the movie feels wrong. I think I appreciate it much more as an adult and think it shouldn’t have been removed. The scene passes much too quickly without it, especially knowing the pacing when it is in place, and the story of Scrooge’s lost love suffers greatly for it, not to menion that the reprise of the song a the end of the film makes much little to no sense when it’s reprising something that was missing. Even as a child who didn’t really like the scene, I think I understood why it was there.
I had completely forgotten that it was set during Christmas. I’ll have to re-watch that one this month, especially since it’s been a few years since I last saw it. Thanks for the tip!
