Can someone explain to me what the fuck the reasoning is behind using the cover of Tears for Fears’ Mad World in the commercial for this game?

“Prison Breakout” is the name of an Arrested Development episode. That almost earns a purchase from me on general principle, and I dont even own the system.

Ask David Fincher (he directed the clip and probably added the music too).
Nothing but Apathy for this game, I just don’t see what the big deal is to be honest.
Well, my guess would be that it looks like a balls-out action game with genuine tactical aspects and stunning graphics, and the multiplayer battles look impressive. But that’s just me.
feh, who really want’s a balls out action game with stunning graphics and killer multiplay when I can have just as much fun clipping my toe nails for all to see via the x-box live camera.
Too-shay.

Because it’s rather awesome, using the juxtaposition of the music/vocals against the visuals in the trailer.
Movies have only been doing that for decades now. Why shouldn’t Gears of War join in?
That TV spot makes spending $460 seem not so bad.

It’s a great song, and goes perfectly with the clip? That would be my guess. It also makes people like my wife, who doesn’t give a shit about video games, look up from her book to see what I’m playing/watching.
Some folks are already playing this!! The bastards!!
my guess would be epic and or microsoft employees playing right now.
But I still continue to hear rumblings about stores getting the game today or this weekend.

Exactly. If I dropped a PS3 on her foot my girl wouldn’t notice, but she couldn’t stop talking about how great the ad was. It’s all about buzz, people. I predict a boost in “Five For Fighting” sales when the Halo 3 ads debut.
I just don’t think it’s exactly the right song to use to promote an action game. It gets attention, but only enough to realize how stupid and out of place the song is.
Eh, just my two cents. Did get me talking about it though, so I guess the point is moot.

And there you have it: heavy metal + action is the ultimate cliche. So how do you get someone to notice your product? Avoid the cliche, which the GoW ad does handily.

I don’t want to beat this to death but I think the song works so well because it really conveys the despair of the “Gears of War” world. Especially at the start of the commericial where the character turns over the head of the statue and looks at its broken face.
I thought the commercial was great. It was darkly humorous.
Halo 3 featuring music by Coldplay.
i assume beating the chapters on hardcore gives you the gamerscore for casual right?

Bingo.
The other reason the ad works so well is the tried-n-true method of selecting particularly soft music that conflicts with the hell going on visually. This has been so many times that it, itself, is close to the point of being cliche.
For reference, look at the signature scene in Platoon. Or the ending shootout in True Romance. Or any John Woo movie. Or the end of Dr. Strangelove. Or the end of Godfather III.
