Do I need a PS2?

Changing my vote to Xbox. I hadn’t thought of the system link and/or Live fun with the BF.

A used Gamecube is what, $50 bucks though? Get both.

Optional: Have someone Mod your Xbox with a modchip so that you can do all sorts of crazy stuff. Emulate old SNES and Genesis games, play mp3’s, etc. Most mod chips these days are switchable so that you can turn them off and still get on Xbox Live too.

There are places that will take your Xbox, install the mod chip, and preload your hard drive with literally hundreds of old SNES and Genesis games.

Christ on a pony, folks – the GameCube is on its last legs.

These next Metroid and Zelda titles poised to be its final hurrah. Yeah, I’m right at the head of the line to recommend its strengths as an “action-gamer’s system,” but you’re utterly S.O.L. if you’re into serious RPGs (a whole three titles there, with only one remotely classifiable as "hardcore"Wink, and with developers like LucasArts jumping ship left right and center…the handwriting’s been up on *that* wall for quite some time now. Nintendo’s been dining out for far too long on their franchises alone, and it’s finally come back to bite them on the arse.

And Nintendo’s system is simply far, FAR too top-heavy on the “lighter” kiddywinky fare for what daily gaming time I have to invest.

You’ve got the Final Fantasy franchise ongoing, but apart from the rare exception which proves the rule (i.e., Xenosaga), PS2’s role-playing assets are no greater than the 'Cube’s.

For sports gaming and some above-average shooters, the GameCube plays right to those strengths. And they seem to be about the only ones keeping the “platformer” genre alive at the moment, apart from the PS2’s Sly Cooper and Jak. And even GTA: San Andreas will be out on Microsoft’s system within the coming year, once the “exclusive premiere” Sony agreement is met.

But for other genres, Xbox knocks Nintendo and Sony out cold. Particularly when adult entries like Morrowind, KOTOR, and Fable are on the table. Not mention Jade Empire, KOTOR II, Doom III, Ninja Gaiden (and the “Hurricane Pack” downloads), HALO 2, Riddick, SW: Battlefront, Republic Commando, the upcoming Crimson Skies sequel, and the reputedly-in-development “Vader Jedi-Hunting” post-Episode III title all either available or coming soon.

Xbox is where it’s at. All else is negotiable.

Oh, come on, grow up. Just because a game has bright colors doesn’t make it any less fun.

And why the hell should you buy any console for new releases at this point? They’re all approaching dead, the Xbox in particular, considering how Microsoft wanted to get the Xbox 2 out in 2005, though it’s looking less and less likely that’s going to happen. At this point, you’re buying a console for it’s catalog titles, and the Gamecube has an excellent library of them.

Oh, and the failure of connectivity is not a valid argument against the entire console. There are two games that require a GBA per person, and they’re quite fun if you can get them together. Four Swords is pretty damn fun even in single player. If you have no GBA, there’s a bunch of other excellent games that don’t require you to.

Waitaminute, there is going to be a Crimson Skies sequel? THANK YOU, JOE PESCI!

Screw the cube. I wasn’t arguing against it in the first place. It doesn’t exist in my world of gaming… the only reason I wanted one was for Viewtiful Joe, but now that it’s out on ps2…

Sure XBOX excells in just about every department, except one: RPG’s.

As far as my tastes go for RPG’s, i’ll keep to my ps2 preferrence. I’ve always preferred Jap-origin RPG’s to the not as intelligent, not as interesting, generic-dull ass ‘Made in Da Usa’ garbage. But that’s me. I’ve said too much already. Fuck it all!

Man, its getting to be like the politics forum in here. My suggestion, look at the big titles everyone has mentioned, decide which ones you want to play, and pick the system that way. One word of advice, sure the ps2 has the worst graphics, but I would stress playing enjoyment over graphics. I would rather have a fun game that doesn’t have the greatest graphics (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night) than a game that looks great but is devoid of fun (Castlevania: Lament of Innocense, or whatever that ps2 castlevania game is).

The Video Game Forum will NEVER be like the Politics forum. Why?

We have more women in skimpy outfits, shooting things, than they EVER will.

we also don’t have any freakin’ close-minded nutbags blind to the opinions and thoughts of others.

*nutbags being people who willingly vote bush.

(I love america and this free speech crap - that is until nutbags begin chattering as if they were on fox news)

*I don’t really love america but I pretend to in real life.

Aside from some tykes who got off the school bus early, this forum is the goods…sure as hell beats the other forums I visited and abandoned the past 4 years.

oh yeah - buy the freakin’ x-box already. or better…darwin, give her yours.

Xbox Live is kind of in a class by itself; its allure cannot be denied. And the Xbox itself looks ready to hit three or four RPG home runs in a row. It’s a fine choice and overall I would probably recommend it the most, especially if Live is a possibility for you.

That having been said, the PS2 is by far the most fun to go impulse browsing and buying for, one of my favorite pastimes. A jillion games in every conceivable genre, many of them $20 or less. Plenty of clunkers of course, but little harm or foul at those prices, and it’s all worth it when you come across digital crack like Amplitude. And then there’s ICO, which costs $15 but is worth $150.

I will forever have sentimental attachments to Nintendo, and the Cube definitely has some must-plays but I cannot recommend it if you are planning on owning just one system. Way, way too long between AAA titles and third-party support is d.e.a.d.

Yeah, Darwin. Give me yours.

S Soldier support is the #1 priority.

HUNGRY FOR SOME SNAKE?

(sorry)

Kyle, are you feeling well?

I’m feeling GRRRREAT.

No seriously, those things are from some really bizarre promos for Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. A game that will be so cool…you should get a PS2 for it.

But I’m not INTO games like Metal Gear Somefin’.

I liek games where I’m an Elf! Tongue

Well, my sincere apologies.

However, in Sly Cooper for PS2 you play as a thieving RACCOON. That’s about as close to an elf as you can get.

But seriously, youd be equally happy with a PS2 or Xbox. The Cube also has enough totally rad games to warrant it’s cheap price.

(In your defense, I’ll be buying MGS for Jason.

Now I just hope I didn’t come across as one of those creepies who have things for elves.

You speak truth with that first sentence, although I do more window shopping than actual purchasing. And I don’t get how folks are seeing ICO for puchase all over the place in B&M stores. I can’t find it anywhere.

Or you could get LOTR: ROTK, where you can actually play as Legolas…

Um, no sorry, but this statement is as far away from the truth as it gets. The PS2 is the console that houses by far the largest number of games that are most likely to appeal to a very limited fringe of gamers. And I’m not talking about japanese-centric stuff like pachislot simulations or RPGs (though it is also the console on which this genre is the most largely represented) but genres such as shoot em ups (see Gradius V or ESPGaluda) or 2D fighting games like Guilty Gear.

Come on, Blunt. Go look at something like Sonic Heroes or Need for Speed: Underground and try to tell me that the PS2 hardware isn’t inferior. The PS2 is capable of pumping out some pretty visuals, but only under the guidance of a handful of good developers. It’s the system with the longest load times, the most slowdown, and the most aliasing problems. That’s the price you pay when you try to beat your opponents out of the gate by almost 18 months.

And I don’t agree with your second point. Sure, there are plenty of niche titles on PS2 (although most of them are Japanese ports), and nobody’s denying that it has more RPGs than anybody else, but when was the last time a PS2 game really pushed the envelope?
