This is the main reason I made PS2 my purchase earlier this month. A great gaggle of $20 games and I can still play my handful of PS1 games (hell, i still play Civ II ) on it.
But I’m not a “real gamer” anyway because 75% of my titles are sports games… grain, salt, etc.
PS2 would be a fine system to get. It looks like everyone just uses it for GTA, but there are still plenty of other reall great exclusive titles like Frequency, Amplitude, Rez, anything from Incog, Final Fantasy etc etc… It’s still a really great system.
The Xbox has a handful of really fantastic exclusives, and it’s good to have one for any game that’s multiplatform. I’m definately glad I have one (even if some of it’s best games are much better on the PC), but I’d probably go crazy if I couldn’t play the great exclusive stuff from the other systems as well.
Animal Crossing is not worth buying a Cube for. Other games are, but not that one.
I’m 90% about the RPG’s and fighters… so in that respect, XBOX blows…
ps2 has still got some serious, post-pinnacle life to it.

But the Xbox has Fable, KOTOR, Street Fighters and DOA Online. And pretty much every multiformat beat-em-up. Not much, but quality over quantity.

I would also suggest a cube. And with the price point you will feel zero guilt for parting with the cash.
Ultimately its all down to what you want to play. Personally I couldn’t live without Nintendo’s games.

X-Box is a lock. Not counting what is on the line-up for 2005. Jade Empire and Darkwatch.

For the record, I’d vote against the Gamecube. You don’t seem to be a fan of first person shooters, which rules out the Cube’s single best game (Metroid Prime, as well as the upcoming Prime 2). Nintendo no longer holds the best platformer franchises and their stupid GBA connectivity push means that you won’t be able to fully enjoy a lot of Nintendo games unless you know three friends who all own GBAs. Paper Mario 2 (in October) and the new Zelda (which is still more than a year away) are the only other games worth anticipating on the system, although I’m planning on picking up Pikmin 2 when its price drops.
Oh, and there are also the Resident Evil games, but those all suck.
So, yeah, go for the Xbox.

Buy an X-box, you’ll be happier. I’ve had all the main console systems and the Xbox is by far the better value. No memory cards, great games, and the best graphics a console can provide.
Well, graphics aren’t really make or break for me - sure I prefer pretty graphics, but when you look at the types of games I play RPG, Sim- Style (We’re talking Civ III & Transport Tycoon type stuff, not THE sims) and the occasional shooter that comes by my desk, graphics are necessarily STUNNING for the Civs of the world, and Rpgs are sometimes itty bitty - the story is more important there.
That said, Fable might be the “must buy” for me in terms of getting an Xbox, but I’m kind of waiting for reviews.

Quality over quantity?
Ps2 has both, in my opinion. DOA is boring and is Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution’s bitch, Fable is overrated (in my opinion, once again), and sure KOTOR is great but I’d rather play any Final Fantasy (I’ll take FFx, FF: Tactics, and FFXI over any XBOX RPG), there’s also Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, the Suikoden series, the Xenosaga series, Ring of Red, the Front Mission series, all the great Atlus RPG’s…
For RPG games-PS2 crushes XBOX hands down, in every aspect.
For fighters…eh, whatever-they’re about the same.
And as for beat em ups… XBOX doesn’t have Viewtiful Joe, does it?

I love it when games that haven’t even come out yet are called overrated.
Metal Gear Solid 3 is pretty much the only reason I got a PS2. I have an unhealthy love for the franchise.
