Ok, you guys have:
a) Convinced me to purchase a GBA
b) Helped me out when I decided to purchase an Xbox for Jason
now I need you to:
C) Tell me if I should purchase a PS2, and/or if I do, what games do you think (based on knowing me) that I’ll like.
I usually give myself a month between “Hey! I should get!” to actually getting, so I’m willing to take any ideas you may have.

It’s a shitty system that unfortunately has a few really good exclusive franchises like Grand Theft Auto, SOCOM and Ratchet and Clank. But I haven’t even turned my PS2 on since beating Ratchet and Clank 2 back in February, and the only PS2 games I’m currently anticipating are the next GTA and Kingdom Hearts 2.
If you’ve got a lot of disposable cash and you’re dying to play a lot of PS2-specific titles, go for it. But the system has the worst graphics and load times out of the three major consoles, and although it has a TON of available titles, very few of them are worth playing. It’s very much a console designed for casual, undemanding gamers.
I haven’t used my PS2 in a long ass time. THUG2, GTA4 and Ratchet & Clank 3 are all coming along in the semi-near future though.
Get a used Gamecube and Animal Crossing instead, especially since you already have the GBA. The new Zelda that’s coming next year looks absolutely killer, and stuff like Animal Crossing and Pikmin 2 should keep you plenty busy until then.
Disclaimer: I don’t yet own a Gamecube, but this is my plan.

Thing is, I can’t get an Xbox, because Jason HAS an Xbox and though I WANT and COVET the Xbox, I can’t by ANOTHER Xbox.

Well, if you’re not moving in with him until May, buy an Xbox (easily the best console on the market) and a subscription to Xbox Live for each of you. There are a ton of games you can play online together, and it’ll definitely eliminate the long distance phone bills. Hell, you can just sit in the Xbox Live lobby and have a free five hour conversation if you feel like it. If you’re the type of person who spends a lot of time on the phone, the subscription will pay for itself.
But then again, I’m a shameless Xbox fanboy.
X-Box. Why? Fable and KOTOR2.
You need no other reason.

At one time, the Xbox was just a HALOBox for me and the PS2 was my everything. That’s changed. Now Xbox is my everything and my PS2 is now my GTAstation.

That said…
I third (or is it fourth? lost count) the XBox recommendation. I own all the consoles, and if I was ordered at gunpoint to toss all of 'em except one… I’d happily keep the XBox. It gets about three times as much use as the other consoles combined.
just for laughs I defend the Ps2. Why? because it is the only system I own and I like to play fun games. There are so many games to buy at a $20 price point that you would be a fool not to get a Ps2.
Platformers like Ratcht and Clank and Sly Cooper, Mark of Kri are not on other consoles are are awesome. All there sequels are hitting this year too.
If you like the rpg’s the Final Fantasy games still rock the ps2 and dont forget the ps2 is backward compatable. Some people around here like playing older games (I being one of them and always “metal detect” the bargin bins at EB games and Gamestop for hidden gems in the PS1 department). recently Disgaea and La Pucille tActics has garnered major props for great rpg/strategy goodness.
while the Xbox really does have awesome graphics I quit buying games for the graphic content back in the Genesis era. Give me a good rpg with Super Nintendo style graphics anyday and I’m a happy camper.
and yes I am probably the only person who has never played Halo. ever. I also hate shooters unless they are side scroller shooters (I remember when a “shooter” referred to R-type and Lifeforce not 1st person shooters like doom and whatever the hell PC games that I’ve never played).
ranting aside, honestly I could probably use my Ps2 for another 2 years easily with the backlog of greatgames I want to play at a minimal price. And from what I have heard, I think Microsoft is already abandoning their X-box for something else..
Xboxes are great. The last PS2 game I bought was Hyper SFII… what a waste of money that was.
I second the Gamecube suggestion. There are so many awesome games availiable nowhere else.

…mheh, I still find myself debating whether or not I should sell my cube (and games amassed). Haven’t picked it up in ages, but still yearn to finish wind waker/prime. It’s still on the market in that other thread…
my 2 cents: buy the freaking x-box. a great system, plenty of kick ass games, and when you move in you two can system link (with your own monitors) for whatever games you play. I’ve come into money several times the past year and haven’t really had any convincing reasons why I should jump into playstation waters (FF & Kingdom Hearts excluded).
I agree with most everyone here. If you have to buy a system, get the XBOX. If not, get a Gamecube.
PS2, with the exception of a few great exclusive titles, is on its last breath and will probably not be the best choice of console in the long run.
That being said, it’s really up to you as far as what games you want to play as each system has its advantages…
XBOX = Halo 2
Gamecube = The Legend of Zelda
PS2 = Gran Turismo 4
