Dimitri, that is the sort of reasoned, helpful response that makes me glad to have discovered CHUD and abandoned the rabid AICN scene. I’ll try it out. If anything, Easterbrook’s admonishments should encourage me, as I typically agree with him on all things football, and disagree on most things sci-fi (sorry, I can’t abide his love for Star Trek, Stargate and the like). BTW, I went to law school at Vandy in Nashville '97-00, lived in Hermitage while I was there. Go 'Dores (on top of the SEC East despite that disappointing loss to MTSU).
This Easterbrook fellow holds the show responsible for his own poor memory and short attention span; I can tell a new episode from a repeat, and I’ve only seen all the aired episodes once. After seeing Pegasus once I can tell you that Adama demanded the Pegasus identify itself only after picking up it’s Colonial beacon. And I don’t remember it being mentioned in the miniseries that the same code was used to disable everything. This guy’s making things up.
That the characters are deeply flawed and don’t get along with one another all that well is part of what makes this show great. They never struck me as being stupid. Selfish and petty and out of their league, sure, but not stupid.
Except the doctor, who puffs away on cigarettes in the middle of a hospital. That never struck me as being very bright. Funny, though.
devin, when you say you dislike the stuff between Baltar and Six, do you just mean the comedy stuff about public sex with invisible women, or also the way that she is basically indoctrinating him into a faith in their God by manipulation, etc? Because I can hardly see you disliking that part of their relationship, but you don’t seem to make the distinction in your posts…
Thanks to this thread I started watching Galatica. I’ve now seen the entire first season and it is damn good television. One of the best space operas ever, perhaps.
OK, had to go swap out my set at Best Buy yesterday because of the “no disc 3, but two disc 5’s” thing, so now I’m back on track. I’m hoping to have Season 1 finished by the end of this week (especially since I Arrested Development Season 2 and Veronica Mars Season 1 come out this week). I want to delve into Season 2, but I reaaaaaally don’t want to buy it in two seperate DVD sets. I kinda feel like holding out for a while to see if they release it as a whole season once it’s done.

I wonder if that was a big packaging error. I should be getting my replacement from Amazon today, so hopefully I get all five discs this time.

Could be. I got mine from Amazon too, but I just took mine to Best Buy and did a “no receipt” exchange for a correct set. I didn’t want to send it back and then wait for another set.
Oh, and is anyone else as annoyed by the use of the work “frak” as I am? I understand that it’s supposed to be a futuristic curse word to bypass the censors, but they really overuse it. It definitely sticks out as obviously made up, almost like a built-in TV edit ("motherscratcher"
and I can’t help but cringe as I hear it. I guess if it wasn’t used so much, it might not bother me as much.
It’s funny, because I have no problem with “ruttin’” or “gorram” but something about “frak” grates on my ears every time I hear it and just sounds so out of place.

I just ordered the first season, having only read this thread and watching 15 minutes of the show in crappy real time video. I guess having fond memories of the old show and being a sucker for gloomy post-apocalyptic tales made this irresistible…
“Frak” is one of a few cute nods toward the original series. Yeah, it’s still kind of annoying, but you get used to it. But it may also be part of a broader, almost too-clever concept: The new series appropriates the names and a few conventions from the original series, and re-imagines the premise, characters and even a couple of specific episodes. As much as it (mercifully) distances itself from the original, it still calls back to it regularly. Given the prophetic mantra that lies at the heart of the new Galactica–“All of this has happened before and all of this will happen again”–one could argue that the mythos of the new series includes all of the events of the original, and we are watching it play out again.
At least, that’s what they probably told Richard Hatch to get him to ditch his own version.
Fake curse words are a scifi tradition, especially on censored TV. I prefer new curse slang to characters screaming out “SHOOT! DARNIT! YOU JERK!” In one episode of Farscape, the tough girl exclaims surprise at a fairly lame plan working by saying, “Frell me dead!”… When used well, they can be better than the real thing…
I agree with the fake curse words in lieu of tame ones, but my problem with “frak” is that it just sounds so silly. And it sounds exactly like what you would think a made up curse word would sound like.
Also, I’ve never seen the old series, so it’s all new to me.
It probably doesn’t help that every time I hear it I think of Elliot in Scrubs exclaiming “frick!”
I respectfully eat my words when it comes to this show. I am hooked.
I too am glad I swallowed my pride and started watching. It’s really worth keeping up with.
I’m feeling left out, but I’ll be joining you all soon enough, hopefully by x-mas. I’ll try to get it as a gift before I risk death-by-fiance and buy it for myself. Sounds like it’s really good.

Anyway, I finished Season 1 last night, and I’ve got to admit I enjoyed it. I doubt it will be one of my favorite shows ever, and I don’t think it’s the best thing on television, but it was pretty damn good.
I really want to get into Season 2. Maybe I’ll Tivo the new ones while I try to catch up with the first half. I’m totally against them splitting it up for DVD, and I doubt I’ll buy it unless they release the full season in one set.
Not to sound like an apologist, but any review that says the new series makes the original look like Citizen Kane has automatically lost my respect. I agree it s a good looking show but I disagree with just about everything else, unsurprisingly enough. What about that constitutes a “great review”?
