I have been sent a copy of the first season (with the miniseries) on DVD, and I have begun watching it. I never watched it on TV because I think 99% of scifi on TV is raving shit, and I don’t trust scifi fans for recommendations because they will watch ANYTHING scifi (thus the people who told to watch that Muppet crap FARSCAPE or the nerd wank of BABYLON 5).
I am halfway through the miniseries and while I thought it started dumb, I have come to like it once the Cylons began nuking everything. Some good war stuff here, like when they vented 100 people into space from the Galactica. Nice!
I will essentially blog my way through the first season here. I know there are BSG threads, but I am calling on my power as one of the main site writers to do my own thing here, and if you don’t like it, tough. Also I think others may discover this show on DVD.
This is the best thing i have seen on TV since Twin Peaks.
The second series is just as good, if not better than the first.
I missed the opening mini series, alas.
It is sans Benedict but it does have Big Dick Hatch!!!
The miniseries was quite good. I doubt the series can keep up the very hardcore tone, though. I mean, how many episodes can involve them leaving behind thousands to be killed by Cylons?
The show actually keeps up the pace, and I think that the second season is easily as strong as the first.
One thing that I was thinking as I finished watching my DVD set is how great Tricia Helfer is. She spends most of her time toying with Gaius, but she seems to be able to play action great, too. I was thoroughly impressed with her ability as an actress in this series. But that goes for most everyone involved. In fact, I can’t really think of a weak point, except maybe some of the new pilots (Racetrack, Hot Dog).
Devin, you’re in for a treat. I think the series is better than the mini series, (or more like the second half of the mini series which is the better part.) This ranks up there with LOST as my favorite of the currently airing dramas.
I’m working my way through season one also. I’mreally digging it. I wonder if they can keep the intensity up, though. Bastille Day started to feel a bit too much like Trek.
I love drunk-ass McCain. He’s my favorite part of the show.

I really don’t like how contemporary much of the society and culture of the show is, though. It doesn’t make any sense for Starbuck to do a disco dance of victory when she wins a card game. I understand that the idea is to make the show more relatable, less about the wacky scifi element, but it’s glaring to me.
They abandoned that device for the first half of the second season, then for some reason went back to it in the second half.
I have to admit, even though I love the show without reservation, I have been sort of on the fence about spoiling the current episode in the credits. They do seem to treat it fairly carefully though, using quick-cut flashes that can be interpreted differently than they actually play out.
If it bothers you, you can always look away from the screen during the credit sequence or fast forward through them I suppose.
I think that post-opening teaser is one of the coolest aspects of the show. I missed it when they didn’t run it for the first few episodes of the season.

That’s something that always stood out for me. The culture, the dialogue, costumes, everything just seemed like it was from Earth now, and in a show like this, it takes you out of it, much the same way the dialogue in RIDDICK did. It reminds me of SPACE: ABOVE AND BEYOND to a degree, although I don’t think that’s a good thing.

I think it’s a little nod to TV retro. Once upon a time many years ago that was a popular gimmick for many shows. Example: I, Spy and Secret Agent Man as well as several westerns.

its unnecessary, but for some reason it stuck. at first i thought it was weird, but now i like it as a way of thinking about the episode as just a small part of a much larger story. my fanboy speculation is that it has something to do with their exodus prophecy but it involves spoilers and a lengthy explanation.
thankfully, it never reveals what’s really going on.
