Still great. I’m so glad they got Alfre Woodard for this new role. She plays Betty Applewhite with a sublime mixture of kindness and menace.
So I’m assuming it’s the father they’re keeping in the basement? Also, something tells me that the relationship between Betty and Matthew isn’t 100% wholesome.
Enjoyed season 1, but there was some annoying quality to the s2 premiere… Maybe it will just take some time to get back into this quirky show.
The father would be a good assumption, but I’m not so sure - that might be too obvious (and why hide it like they did).
The opening was shit. If they were going to make me wait a full summer to watch Teri Hatcher scream “No!” as long as Vader and then tackle the kid they should have done that at the end of the season, gunshot and all, then revealed that Susan was a random bad shot. That would have been a better pay off.
The hand reaching out looked like it belonged to a white male. Maybe Zach’s father? No, that’s just stupid to imagine. Nevermind.

I’ve always found Teri Hatcher’s character annoying, but everyone else bugged me as well. Maybe its just that after seeing amazing premiere’s from Arrested Devlopment and Lost, this episode just felt bland. I liked Lynette’s storyline, although that ladies rant about how one has to choose a career or family just felt so cliche. And what ad exec wears a see-through, lace blouse to work?That lady fucking annoyed the hell out of me.
Also, my DVR cut off before the episode ended. The last last thing I saw was the mom hand the kid the gun and they descended down the stairs. Did I miss anything major?

An OK premiere.
Bree and Lynette’s storylines were much better than Gabriella’s and Susan’s.
When Bree stopped the casket closing at the end of the funeral to change out her husband’s tie, I was cracking up.
Also, I’m wondering who installed the reinforced steel door in the Applewhite’s basement.
So-so episode again.
– I liked that they are finally picking up Bree’s storyline with the investigation into Rex’s death. I’d love to see her gay son’s revenge plot start to take action.
– Susan running over Edie was great. I also liked her snooping around the Applewhite’s house. Seeing her face after Betty said her son was making all the noise in the house and then the son walking by was priceless.
– Edie’s roller girl outfit = not so great.
– Lynette’s control freak storyline is starting to get old. I hope they do something else with her character besides having her just yell at her husband all the time.
– Gabrielle’s story is also pretty boring. It always has been though.
Lynette and her husband fighting over the sheets was pretty damn hilarious.
That was a funny scene, though this past week’s episode was crap.
I don’t know if we were all just sucked into the hype last season or if the show has declined in quality, but this season is really disappointing.
i totally agree. the mystery of the show got esolved so now it’s getting pretty lame . i mean we found out who mike really is and why mary alice commited suicide and they replaced it with some dude chained in a basement. i could really care less about betty white and her family.
show is unmitigated ass this year. same as the oc. none of the stories revolving around the characters we watch the shows for are remotely interesting. shame.

This show has really gone downhill. The recasting of the guy chained in the basement will most likely be painfully obvious to dedicated viewers and I am glad that Mike left Susan’s whiny ass. I am hoping they wrote a storyline where Bree finds out George killed Rex. That would be freakin’ awesome to see Bree “go medieval on his ass.”

The show is not “unmitigated ass”. The major problem this season is The Applewhites: Their mystery is useless. They have no connection to the rest of the neighborhood so there’s absolutely no reason to care about their situation. If the son goes to jail, fine. If not, that’s fine too. But they barely interact with the rest of the cast so it’s not like any of their actions will affect anyone else.
But last Sunday’s episode was incredible. Not only was Susan’s desperate plea for Mike to stay just heartwrenching (especially as she was out in a wedding dress), the date-rape of Bree absolutely brutal and shocking, but there was NO Applewhites! Not even one second of screentime for them and rightfully so.
I hate that the phenomenal moments of this show are getting overshadowed by this one issue.
I agree, Goldberg, the mystery is the problem, and you pegged the reasons.
But, I don’t think Bree was date raped, I thought he waited for her to wake up . . . you were supposed to think he was, because he took off his tie, but then they revealed that he was just waiting for her - so I didnt think thats what happened (just what we were supposed to think was gonna happen for the commercial break).
I think he totally raped her while she was unconscious and then said he was just waiting for her to wake up. Why else would he give her medicine he knew would make her pass out?
Maybe you’re right, but I was thinking it was so he could get in her room, act like a great guy by waiting for her, then give her the ultimatum he did (which worked).
To me, it was more like a psychological powerplay, I thought. But maybe you’re right.

I agree with Brechtsky.
I was initially under the impression that he was about to rape her, but when they revealed him sitting there and he gave her the ultimatum and she relented, he got what he had pining for.
A nice return-to-form last night for the show. The only times it slowed down was when they force fed the Applewhite plot in.
George’s dispatch of Bree’s therapist was both funny and quite frightening.
And when did Bree’s daughter become such a sexpot?
