Award Season 2023-2024

Honestly, they should probably just nominate stupid shit like Jack Black’s Bowser song , just because it’ll kill in the show.

Look, guys, I’m in agreement with you about Eilish’s song (and vocal delivery in general) but nearly every woman I know LOVES that song (and Eilish herself is pretty damn popular). So I’m not surprised that she won over “I’m Ken,” despite the latter being a better song.

The film is BARBIE, not KEN. You can’t have the winning song from BARBIE not be about Barbie herself.

Or the Muppets.

Haven’t seen Barbie yet but I watched the musical performances on YouTube and I don’t know what you guys are talking about. Ken is a funny fucking song but the Eilish song is great. No idea what the problem is. And I’ll double down with her Bond song being my favorite of the Craig era.

Eilish’s was the more emotional song that resonated a lot stronger with people, so it makes sense why that wins over the goofier “I’m Just Ken”.

Look, some people really like mumbly vocal delivery and some people have good taste. Wink

I’ll have you know that I have great taste in music. I’ve seen Creed live in concert 3 times!

Like MichaelM, I hear ‘what was I made for’ in the song and honestly, it’s just my old, deaf ears because I don’t know what other words are there. I’ve been a fan of tons of mumbly singers, and lord knows I still dunno what Dylan is saying but after hearing this and others like that song about that woman who…kills her boyfriend’s new girlfriend (maybe) (actually, now I think about it, this song again) at the Grammy’s I declare myself ‘too old for whatever the kids are listening to these days’.

Also, Eilish’s song was all wrong for Night Country.

*** Spoilers ***

She only killed her ex-boyfriend, the new girlfriend is next. Bravo for almost name checking SZA!

This cannot be said enough times.

Eilish’s song for Barbie CLEARLY hit the right spot for a lot of folks, and that’s fine. Frankly, my opinion of the song doesn’t and shouldn’t matter: it’s not aimed at me, and it doesn’t need to be.

From what little I’ve heard of her songs, the music ranges from sorta generic to fine but the mumblecore delivery just annoys the shit out of me.

The soft, breathy delivery doesn’t bother me, but I don’t listen to her music much. I can’t imagine listening to entire albums of it, though - it’d definitely start feeling like schtick at some point. It’s weird, because when she nudges towards going all-out, it sounds like she’s got a terrific voice for it.

Didn’t catch the Barbie song, but her song for Bond was really good.

She definitely veers into actually singing for the Barbie song and yeah, she has a decent voice. I absolutely could not take an entire album of her whispery mumbling.

Now you guys can understand where the old folks in the 1960s were coming from when they were complaining about kids and their rock and roll. Wink

Oh, you mean like Tolkien complaining about the Beatles in his letters?

And James Bond dissing The Beatles at their height.

I don’t think she’s like that for entire albums, but those kind of songs were what made her big, so it makes sense that the singles that are released are of that variety. Now that they won her two Oscars, she’ll either be inclined to keep doing that or use her already massive clout to try new things. And at 22. Good for her!

Speaking of being old, I’m tired of the way conversations about this kind of stuff are framed nowadays. It’s like, if something is anointed, it’s cool, and if it’s not, it’s mocked or otherwise attacked. I like Gosling, and the Ken number was fun, but it just as easily could have been labeled corny if people decided they didn’t like Gosling because he cheated on XYZ, or had the wrong opinion about Israel. Or take the Mulany vs. Kimmel thing. Do I think Mulaney is funnier than Kimmel? Yeah- but Mulaney, like most comics, also has a shtick that could get old or worn out. He made fun of that one Madame Web line, virtually the same joke that has been made a million times since the trailer dropped, and people are like “YES! LET THIS GUY HOST! HE GETS IT!”

In case folks weren’t watching until last hour like me:

Most of the Oscars bits weren’t great. DeVito and Schwarzenegger were hysterical. “Batman, that son of bitch…”

Speaking of Gosling: dude needs to cut back on the cheek filler.

Speaking of Mulaney: get a hair cut, hippy!
