Award Season 2023-2024

Spreading the love around. Didn’t see AMERICAN FICTION winning screenplay, as it felt very disjointed and in need of a stronger satirical voice.

Godzilla!!!

Jon Mulaney for Oscar host!

Guess Ray Stevenson and Lance Reddick weren’t in good standing with the Academy. Nor Joss Ackland.

Pacino was fucking hammered.

I saw Lance Reddick on the wall of names at the end.

I’m not crazy about Kimmel, but I thought this was the best production in years. A lot of deserving wins, and it ended early.

That wall of names don’t count. I am insulted on Reddick’s behalf.

Ray was on the wall as well.

No image, no laundry.

Besides the real time clap back at Trump, Kimmel was atrocious…again. WTF was that nonsense about RDJ having a rectangular penis? Seriously? Just bottom of the barrel shit. Please get Mulaney, Fey/Poehler or Steve Martin/Martin Short for next year.

I’m sure there will be a lot of dissenters about Stone winning over Gladstone but she deserved it (as good as Gladstone is in Killers).

Quality of the show be damned - it had highs despite Kimmel’s diet Letterman antics - but this is one hell of a satisfying year for the winners: Oppenheimer, Murphy, RDJ, Nolan, and lest we forget…. Godzilla.

I think Mulaney wrote his own material. It was better than whatever most of the other presenters had.

I never understood the appeal of Mulaney. He just comes off as white bread, not a substantial upgrade of a host.

I’d watch him describe the plot of Field of Dreams for at least twenty minutes.

Guarantee Frank Whaley was eagerly waiting to get name-checked.

So epic, so goddamn funny. Eilish and Robbie losing their shit right at the start, the pink karate boards, the overhead cam, all of it.

I think he might have singlehandedly boosted THE FALL GUY’s opening weekend by $10M. Fuck that guy is charming.

The Mr. Stockslivevan Story.

Mulaney was good.

During the In Memoriam, it was impossible not to think of the Catalina Wine Mixer as they were singing. Wife and I yelled “BOATS N HOES!” a couple of times.

Except for the SOTU clapback, Kimmel was the very picture of white male mediocrity failing upward. The square penis joke was just really weird.

Fey/Poehler would probably be my ideal Oscar hosts. Mulaney…I dunno. He’s an excellent standup but I don’t trust that they’d let him cook.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph had the best acceptance speech, but I also found OPPENHEIMER’s editor’s thank yous very heartfelt.

The appeal of Billie Eilish’s music continues to elude but it ain’t for me, so that’s fine.

Gladstone spends the second half of this long movie in bed! As much talk as there was about changing the focal point of the script, I still feel like this is primarily a supporting role, especially in the home stretch.

Also, ZONE OF INTEREST for Best Sound was spot on. The “Oscar clip” showing a flower with that gut-churning hum underneath was a perfect representation of how that sound mix made the movie.

I get that the ballots had been cast before the show and the winners picked, but it’s mind boggling to award that Billie Eilish caterwaul (a second time!) over the glory that is I’m Just Ken. Eilish’s? What a drippy, whiny song that kills the mood and honestly sounds like a mumbling, high-pitched version of a Billie Eilish song.

Agreed. They even gave “I’m Just Ken” the final slot because they knew it would kill, then they give the award to “Wah: The Song.”
