Award Season 2023-2024

We just had the Golden Globe awards tonight and OPPENHEIMER won a bunch…Picture (Drama), Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, and score. ANATOMY OF A FALL did really well too.

Can anything really stop OPPIE from winning the big prize this year at the Oscars?

It has all the right pieces. Historic biopic, made a buncha money, director has never won. An ‘oh wow!’ supporting performance. A lot can happen in the next two months!

Oppenheimer is the front runner, for sure. Poor Things did well too, as did Holdovers. And I expect them to rack up some noms, maybe some wins. But I would have to say Oppenheimer is positioned to clean up, as it’s a very appropriate time to award Nolan and Downey, both of whom are long deserving and essentially Hollywood royalty.

The most exciting horse races are Cillian Murphy Vs Paul Giamatti and Lily Gladstone Vs Emma Stone.

Took a quick glance at the Golden Globe winners and it’s like they just asked social media what should win. Succession, The Bear, Oppenheimer, Nolan, Lily Gladstone, Cillian Murphy, Paul Giamatti, RDJ, Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin, Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Emma Stone, etc… Dare say the Oscars won’t have that much nerd cred. The Globes are really trying! Did they do *anything* weird? Give Ryan Murphy the Lifetime Achievement Award or something?

Nothing for THE LAST OF US, though. I thought Bella Ramsey might take for that.

Oh I thought someone said Offerman won.

I think Cillian Murphy is close to being a lock. Gladstone and (Mad?)Stone is definitely the big horse race. I could see them splitting the vote and someone else sliding in there to win in an upset.

Is it ranked choice voting? I could see Cooper siphoning first place votes from Murphy and Giamatti sneaking in there with a lot of second place votes. Crazier things have happened. And I wouldn’t hate it, if I’m being honest. (I do think Murphy deserves it, though.)

I’d vote Giamatti, which is maybe why I’m thinking he’s a credible contender. Murphy is a great choice too though.

OPPENHEIMER was my favorite movie of the year, and I’d be happy if Murphy won the Oscar…

… but I’d vote for Giamatti, too. I think he is more particularly vital to how well THE HOLDOVERS works, whereas OPPENHEIMER could have gotten by with a lesser performance (or perhaps an entirely different actor).

He won the Emmy for Guest Star last night.

And yeah, unless KOTFM surges last minute, I think it’s just gonna be an Oppie sweep down the line. It’s Nolan’s year.

Nothing short of a nuclear war!

Hilarious to me that in a year when the Golden Globes are making a bid to be “real” and relevant again, they give an award for making the most money.

Murphy’s a talented actor but I didn’t see his performance in OPPENHEIMER as being the pinnacle for 2023.

And I knew it was SUCCESSION’s night, but I wanted THE DIPLOMAT and BARRY to get some of the love.

As my wife and I are the sole members of #TeamBillions, we can only keep up with one show about spiteful rich people, not having to see Succession keep winning is the best part of them winning for their final season!

THE HOLDOVERS has only grown in esteem for me. It’s pretty great.

But come on, OPPENHEIMER is the movie of the year. Sometimes the obvious choices are obvious for a reason.

That and it feels like it’s time for Nolan to get his pat on the back.

I don’t know that there’s another film from 2023 that is directed – technically and cinematically – at as high a level as OPPENHEIMER. Fincher’s THE KILLER is a wonderful directorial showcase, but there’s obviously no way that’s getting nominated.

If OPPENHEIMER were to win only one Oscar, it should be for Nolan’s direction. And it would be highly deserved.
