Production Design at the very least!
Wes has actually only ever gotten one Production Design nod for his films in his career: Grand Budapest Hotel. At this point, I think we just have to admit the Academy doesn’t like his films (beyond Shorts being like “Wow, Wes Anderson! A fame-o made a short!”).
Oppenheimer has six locked, I think: Picture, Director, Supporting Actor, Sound, Score, and Editing. Possibly Cinematography too but I could see that being an upset. Beyond that it’s a dogfight.
The Robbie snub is going to age like milk. Godzilla Minus One getting in the best surprise (and the first-ever nom for the franchise - M:I also finally getting its first noms this morning!), fingers crossed the Big G can pull it off, especially because the director is also credited on VFX so this would be a way to award him.
Zone of Interest might get Sound. It’s a sound movie.
They created/designed an entirely new film format (black-and-white IMAX film), so it had better win. That’s the sort of thing that should get them a Special Achievement Oscar, frankly.
I haven’t seen the movie, but it’s surely less egregious than leaving out Greta Lee and Natalie Portman.
The only performances from BARBIE that I ever heard really praised are the two that did get nominated.
Oh, Portman absolutely should have been nominated first. But Robbie and Gerwig are going to to be the internet cause of the season, and it’s quite arguable that Gerwig should have been in there. She turned it into a phenomenon, and while I’m sure Anatomy of a Fall and Zone of Interest are doubtlessly very well directed, this is the goddamn Oscars, not an objective evaluation of merit. She should be nominated.
That said, I think the snub probably improves Barbie’s chances across the board, for its other nominations. If the internet outrage machine catches the right air, I think it might even be a dark horse for Best Picture.
OPPENHEIMER will win.
There’s no doubt this qualifies as a snub, but Gerwig is 40, and has already been nominated for 4 Oscars, including Best Director. She’s now making Narnia movies for Netflix. I know she went to St. Francis High, and maybe she has a deep close personal connection to C.S. Lewis’ fiction, but my point is, I’m not weeping for her here. Make some more great movies like Lady Bird, and more nominations will be in her future. It’s not like Glazer or Triet are undeserving replacement nominees.
I feel worse for Robbie’s snub, because who knows when Hollywood will spit her out and stop giving her plum roles. But she’s been nominated before a couple times (for the wrong stuff, naturally), and apparently is a producer on this, so she’s technically nominated for Best Picture.
“The Discourse” will make like these are the worst snubs of all-time. But they’re not even close.
I think Robbie will be fine. She was a producer on Barbie, which made a kajillion dollars, and she was a key player in its success. Regardless of the Oscar outcome, she has a lot of juice right now.
If I’m not mistaken it was Robbie’s project and she brought it to Gerwig.
Gerwig was up against five astonishingly directed films. It’s not like Bradley Cooper is up there. Meanwhile I didn’t know people had even heard of Nyad before yesterday.
I’ve seen a few fairly deranged takes about the misogynist travesty of their favorite toy commercial only getting 8 nominations, including Best Picture, to complement its Globes haul, universally rave reviews, and billion dollar BO take. And while Robbie is very good in the movie, I wouldn’t say it’s a shoo-in Best Actress performance, particularly because her big emotional climax sequence at the end is the one part of the movie that doesn’t entirely land imo. Gerwig probably deserves the Director nom, but she’s already so lauded and young and hey, Best Picture is a pretty good consolation prize.
At the same time, and while it may be playing directly into the themes of the movie to say this, they really shouldn’t have even bothered nominating any other Supporting Actors this year. They should have just given Gosling the trophy 40 minutes into the premiere screening. It’s probably the best comedic performance this century.
And let’s not pretend that, at the time, there weren’t a bunch of “Ryan Gosling stole the whole movie!” takes even from people who are now complaining about the nominations.
huh, for some reason I thought she was snubbed for LADY BIRD too, but I guess I conflated it with the snub for LITTLE WOMEN?
I thought she’d never been nominated for director
I dunno. I think Downey’s going to take this.
Agreed. I think it’s Downey’s.
Oh, I wasn’t saying Gosling will win, because the Academy is still super hung up about recognizing comedic performances over dramatic ones. But it shouldn’t be a contest, imo.
At what point do they move away from gendering the awards? I suspect they’ll divide into comedy and drama then, so as to not reduce the number of trophies they give out.
I heard so many great things about Downey’s performance and I thought it was pretty bad. He didn’t come across as believable and I saw nothing except Downey.
Robbie was pretty much a reactive character in Barbie, while Ken used agency, screwed up while acting on it, had an arc, and changed as a person by the end. It was a better part. Robbie had very little to do in the film except look surprised a lot of the time.
To echo schwartz, I’m not saying I personally think Downey should get the award. I’m giving my opinion about which way the wind seems to be blowing this award season.
And like schwartz, I agree that Gosling deserves it, full stop. RDJ is good in OPPENHEIMER but I didn’t find it revelatory or incredible.
(Then again, I was mostly underwhelmed by OPPENHEIMER as a whole, so…)
If only it had gone on even longer after the bomb went off, right!?!?!?
