That’s how you campaign for the big award.
Never heard of Beef.
we were too busy fixating on REBEL MOON!
My understanding of the “box office” category is that they select the highest grossing and critically ancclaimed films, and vote for which is the best of them. BARBIE easily fit into the category.
If TRANSFORMERS had turned out to be the highest grossing film but had a negative reception then it wouldn’t make it in the nominees. That’s why THE LITTLE MERMAID didn’t make the list but JOHN WICK 4 did.
Best Actress is definitely going to be a battle between Stone and Gladstone. Guess it could go either way. I like Poor Things as a film more than KOTFM, but I would not be mad if Gladstone won at all.
It’s a transparent veneer of critical credibility that doesn’t disguise the award from being one given purely on popularity.
I don’t take any of these awards seriously so it’s not like I’m offended or anything. I still find it hilarious that they just straight up added a category for most liked movie. GG basically became the MTV movie awards with that step.

EDIT:
Quick thoughts:
- I guess the Academy doesn’t like Wes Anderson or Todd Haynes. Too bad!
- Nothing for Ferrari either?
- I have not seen NYAD but this is apparently the darling of the Academy’s menopausal wing.
- Gerwig not nominated for directing BARBIE is a genuine surprise.
My thoughts…
The Good
- GODZILLA MINUS ONE snagged a Visual Effects nomination!
- John Williams received his 54th (!) nomination.
The Bad
- No Greta Lee (for PAST LIVES) or Natalie Portman (for MAY DECEMBER), two of the best performances of the year.
- Purely on the merits, A HAUNTING IN VENICE should have gotten into Best Cinematography.
- GODZILLA MINUS ONE should have also been nominated for Best Sound.
- Best Makeup used to be a haven for genre films to get representation, but ever since they added Hairstyling to it, it’s mostly become just another category for period films. The Leonard Bernstein old age makeups in MAESTRO are very good, though.
I hope Godzilla Minus One wins for Visual Effects. The Gerwig absence is the most surprising, I think Poor Things has take some of the feminist thunder away. I’d bet money on Emma winning the big one. I also think Oppenheimer is going to steamroll categories.
What matters is that ratings will be up, thanks to some real noms for Barbie.
OPPENHEIMER is going to dominate the victories. I don’t foresee a clean sweep (Blunt ain’t winning for supporting actress, for one thing) but it’s going to take the majority of its nominations.
I think OPPENHEIMER wins Picture, Director, Supporting Actor, Cinematography, Score, Editing, and Sound.
Could also win Best Actor, but I kind of think it’s Giamatti’s year.
Giamatti’s gonna win.
I’m not one to get worked up about Oscar stuff, but no Portman is crazy!
My pie-in-the-sky nomination was a supporting actor nod for Nathan Lane for BEAU IS AFRAID, but alas…
I think it’s telling that KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON did not get an Adapted Screenplay nomination.
Anderson is nommed for Live-Action Short.
I think it’s a fine list and will be roughly how we imagine it (though no Robbie makes it a…STONE COLD FIGHT! for Best Actress). But I desperately, maybe painfully hope that ZONE OF INTEREST’s one lone Oscar is for sound. Unfucking real that.
My takeaway is that Oppenheimer is going to clean up, and that I feel bad for America Ferrera, who was just fine in Barbie, but is going to get put under the microscope because Robbie was left out of the nominees.
I was toying with the idea that Giamatti could win, but I just don’t see how, if Oppenheimer gets Picture, Director, Supporting Actor, possibly Adapted Screenplay, and a ton of other important awards, that they’d not also reward the central, ridiculously great performance that is at the core of the film. It just doesn’t compute.
I think it’s very funny that BARBIE got tons of nominations…aside from the director and the star. Wut?
If Giamatti wins, it will be as much a “Lifetime Achievement/make-up for SIDEWAYS” win than a HOLDOVERS win.
Murphy V Giamatti is totally the most fun horse race, I think is the main thing. But Murphy remains the odds on favorite.
surprised at the lack of noms for ASTEROID CITY. I had that one pegged as being up there for Best Supporting Actress (ScarJo) and possibly Best Picture and Director.
