I just realized that the republicans can make an issue out of this politically if their evil enough. a NIGERIAN (aka Black) man tries to blow up an airliner. Calls for racial profiling that Obama can’t possibly authorize.

I havn’t talked to one person at work this morning who is in any way more scared today after the flamable Nigerian incident than they were before they’d known about it. Al Qaeda would have caused more terror if they’d attacked a Salvation Army worker outside an Arkansas Walmart*. I guess it’s a good thing they’re sort of hilariously incompetent bunglers, for the most part. Their evil scheme to destroy the Brooklyn Bridge by blow torch comes to mind, LOLz

You KNOW the Cheney’s are going to be all over this event. They’ll go on and on about how there wasn’t a single terrorist attack during the Bush years and how there has already been one in the Obama years. And the MSM will refuse to call them out on the fact that the 9/11, the Anthrax Killer, and Richard Reid all happened on their watch.

I really think the profiling issue is in the republican/Karl Rove back pocket. This could be good or bad…
Positive:
-There are more minorities than 1988 during the Dukakis/Bush/Horton-hears-a-who debacle. Plus white people become a minority in 2050.
-A lot of the Jim Crow types are dead
Negative:
-The Jim Crow types had kids
-It could work.
Disclaimer: I am not saying that all conservatives are racist assholes who want to repress minorities. However, i never underestimate how low the political strategists will be willing to stoop.
Plus I do telesurveys for a living: there are still racist assholes alive. Even in New Jersey.
I am actually FOR profiling at airports. There are not enough resources to treat everyone equally. That very idea is insane. If when judging potential security risks we are treating the old American woman in the wheel chair equally with an Arab American man in his 20s, than we have serious problems
With that said…
TSA screeners basically need to all be fired and we need to start over again. We need professionals who do not belittle or bully when searching, and know inside and out the legality and justification for any action they may undertake.
I’d like to think that with better screeners and a more dignified screening process, Arab Americans and other such types wouldn’t mind. As long as they are being treated like human beings and American citizens, they’d gladly consent to a quick search or additional background checks. It’s more honest and upfront than the government just spying on their phone calls and emails anyway, at least. And if they’re American and love this country, why wouldn’t they want to help out?*

*Again, my opinion on this is conditional on screening processes being drastically reworked/improved. Without those requisites, I can’t in good faith say that an Arab family should want to submit to abusive screening procedures.

We live in a country where a girl who transferred colleges because there were too many Asians there and exclaimed “Sambo beat the bitch!” when she heard the results of the Democratic primaries ended up being the bottom half of the Republican ticket last year. You do not need to be a racist to be for racial profiling, or english as the national language (two positions I support in limited specific circumstances).
But yes, this country is full of hateful people, as I am learning. Growing up I thought that shouting the N word in public was only something that happened in movies anymore. Sadly 2008 provided quite an education to the contrary.

DevinF got me fair and square, but Yemen barely has a government and is over run with Jihadi groups. Al Qaeda recruits heavily there.
It is the poorest Arab country in the world, btw.
