AThe drastic change in perspective and gameplay worries me. It looks less like DMC/Bayonetta/Ninja Gaiden, which the series has always been reminiscent of, and looks more like RE4 without guns. Seems like it would better served as a Viking/Norse mythology game without the GoW connection.

Kratos without the chain blades is like Solid Snake witout stealth.

Well, this look at the game has me hyped, and I really never liked the GOW games in terms of story or characters.

It looks gorgeous, the gameplay seems like a mixture between the old games and a Dark Souls style game, and the fact that the director of the game credits George Miller as a direct influence/mentor in terms of teaching him narrative and cinematography for the game makes me interested in this.
This looks like it will be to this series what Resident Evil 4 was to RE, along with a massive step up in maturity and dept for the narrative.

I have been trying to keep my hype in check for this game for a long time.

I am super pumped.

I have always been a fan of this series (I have all the PS2/PS3/PSP games) and I am looking forward to the changes to freshen up the franchise.

Plus Norse mythology? What a great place to take this series.

I don’t care how “bro” it is, I’m a huge God of War fan, making it a point to play every installment (even the PSP ports) at least once (and the original 3 probably 3x each). I don’t understand people who avoid these games, especially if you’re a fan of Greek mythology, huge scale, brutal combat and fun weapon upgrade choices.

I’ve been avoiding so much about the game that I didn’t even realize it was Kratos in the game, given how III ended, so my hype level shot through the roof. I can’t wait to see how the narrative and gameplay changes it all, and see it as a welcome change of pace

What Sony did with GoW in 2005 is still mind blowing. The scale of that game was unprecedented at the time. Yes the button tapping mini games showed the limitations of the hardware, however, you were never saw a cinematic game like that before. And it was on PS2.

I remember what still blew my mind the most in the first game is during the final battle against Ares. As an embiggened Kratos you wield the giant sword that, earlier in the game, was a bridge.

I mean, fuck me.

Yes!! When II ended it left me stunned at the note they left it hanging on, leading to III which was basically one long boss battle ending it all. And they made it visually stunning to a point that it all seemed so effortless.

I’m an easy mark when it comes to scale, and God of War fills that void quite nicely.

I am with you guys on the GoW franchise. It’s always been an absolute blast.

And by the sound of things…this one is a sterling follow-up. The review embargo has lifted and its pretty much universally praised for its combat system and the more mature storytelling. Reviewers saying it manages to reinvent the games for the better while still retaining that fast, fun and brutal combat mechanics.

Sitting at 94 on Metacritic based on 76 critics. The lowest score I saw was an 8/10.

This comes out a day before my birthday and sounds like it’s going to be a fantastic gift to myself.

It is one of those games that takes Norse mythology as a core idea and treats it with respect, while also integrating it seamlessly into the story and making it important to the narrative. I have a newfound interest in learning more about Norse mythology, and it truly makes a game special when it encourages the player to learn more beyond the scope of the game itself.

There’s much more on the road ahead, and God of War is very good at sinking its hooks in deep from the outset. Its world is one rich with lore that makes up many journal entries and exciting finds, but its story of compassion and family is what’s driving Kratos and his son forward. It’s a fascinating dynamic to see slowly build, propped up by some clever environmental puzzles and (so far) exhilarating combat. There’s a lot more to see here, but God of War makes a powerful first impression.

God of War has changed. This new Nordic chapter transforms the series into an impressive action/adventure, rediscovering the value of exploration. Yet the soul of God of War is still there: and emerges, in all its imperious power, during the brutal fights and the violent clashes. As the main story progresses and the optional contents unfolds, God of War affirm itself as one of the most dense, surprising and rich adventure of the last three generations.

I expected great action from God of War, and it delivers that handily. But I didn’t expect it to be a thrilling journey in which every aspect of it complements the others to form what is nothing short of a masterpiece. However, this is accompanied by a very well-told story, excellent animations, a very interesting new universe, fun gameplay and a new partner that develops a very promising personality. You can feel the dedication and care that Santa Monica Studio put into every frame of this game. Despite going in a new direction, God of War somehow manages to feel familiar and it is the worthy beginning of a new saga that surely has a lot to give us in the future. This is a very carefully made game that will certainly help define this generation and that is nothing short of a masterpiece.

God of War is a special game. This reimagining of the famous PlayStation franchise elevates the series in unexpected ways, without forgetting the core tenets that made Kratos a fan-favourite to begin with. This is a sprawling single player epic with an abundance of secrets and a storyline that keeps you hooked from start-to-finish. While it borrows liberally from other action adventure greats, its unique combat and outstanding artistic direction separate it from its immediate peers. A truly impressive achievement.

Looks like it merges Last of Us with God of War. I pre-ordered, and I never pre-order. I actually want to support this kind of narrative driven, non-fetch quest, non-Ubisoft-style-open-world, non-DLC, non-season-pass, non-microtransaction driven, non-games-as-a-service model of video game release.

I was a bit concerned after the first hour or so, because I don’t think the narrow foc of the camera works super well for fighting groups of enemies in a Souls-like game, but the first boss battle is great and got me enthused to play more.
