If he is a kickboxer, should be fun.
I don’t know anywhere close to the information you guys do on MMA as I am jsut a fan of the show and fighting, but Is Ken Shamrock the worst coach ever? I mean he really seems like hs gusy do whatever they want.

I’m sure there are far worse coaches than Shamrock. But as he is someone associated with the UFC for damn near it’s entire run, to relegate grappling to nothing more than basic “Ground and Pound” techniques in today’s UFC is pretty embarassing. Royce Gracie introduced the world to the advantage Jui Jitsu gives someone in ground warfare when the UFC was all about distinct styles so convincingly it’s part of damn near every successful MMA fighters repertoire to some degree. To ignore that facet of the sport is poor coaching. To ignore hard core endurance and conditioning regimes doesn’t speak well for him either.
Of course, once again, this could just be creative editing on the show’s part.
I just think the sport passed him by and he refuses to recognize that weight lifting, grappling and ankle locks are not the end all be all anymore. I’m not sure of the overrall success of the Lion’s Den but I don’t think it’s been very good. He seems like a decent enough guy and has done a hell of a lot for the sport but his training is bunk. I watched him throw in the towel in a Pride match not too long ago because he was gassed about 5 minutes or so in.
And my bad on Danny, he’s a tae kwon do guru but has been kickboxing professionally prior to this.
In the first few UFC’s, it used to be _______ discipline vs. __________ discipline (like Kenpo vs. Sumo), no weight ranges, no real MMA-type guys. Gracie got everyone one going “what’s this jiu jitsu stuff?” and then a pro-wrestler (believe it or not) in Dan Severn was one of the first to utilize the ground and pound and combine it with effective striking, and Shamrock put them together really well–at least until he left for the WWF (as it was at the time).
There’s a video going around the internet with the 500 lb. guy fighting a “small” guy, and that’s from the first UFC. That was a sumo guy vs. a Kenpo guy. No pads on either one of them. And those guys used to fight tourney-style, with multiple fights in one night. A lot of the guys couldn’t finish the night, since they didn’t wear gloves, they’d get into the finals with broken finger, hands, knuckles, etc. That Kenpo guy broke his hand on the skull of the big sumo guy and had to drop out.
that’s gotta be the one where Manny Yarborough (5000 lbs) has a little guy crawl around him like a squirrel on a tree and at one point the little dude works the speedbag on Yarborough balls, which was perfectly legal then.
Joe Son Doe, man. Joe Son Doe. Look for that tape. I think that was who fought the Kenpo guy after he beat the sumo guy. The Kenpo guy just unloaded on Joe Son’s nuts for like 10 minutes. We say at the gym when someone takes a nut shot, “Dude, he Joe Son Doe’d you.” Joe Son was the fighter’s name, and his “style” was Joe Son Doe.
EDIT: Keith Hackney is the Kenpo guy.
Speaking of Keith Hackney, according to MMA Weekly, he is rumored to be one of the fighters on Season 4 of TUF. The show is called “The Comeback” and features 16 fairly established fighters going for a 6-figure cash prize and a title shot. Here are the rumored participants:
Rumored Fighters at Middleweight (185 pounds):
-Jorge Rivera
-Patrick Cote
-Charles McCarthy
-Keith Hackney (48 years old)
-Gideon Ray
-Mark Weir
-Edwin Dewees
-Travis Lutter
Rumored Fighters at Welterweight (170 pounds):
-Matt Serra
-Chris Lytle
-Shonie Carter
-Rich Clementi
-Mikey Burnett
-Pete Spratt
-Nick Diaz
-Din Thomas
Advisors - Randy Couture, Georges St. Pierre, Mark DellaGrotte
I am utterly disappointed that Ken Shamrock is not on that list.
Joe Son Doe huh? doesn’t ring a bell but I’m pretty foogy on the early ufc particulars, I seem to remember Manny Y taken numerous shots to the forbidden speedbag at some point as well. Must be a hallmark of the sumo style applied to mma. Remember that big think russian dude who was known as the polar bear? I wonder whatever happened to him.
I love that idea of veteran fighters for the next tuf. THe should really try to get the samshing machine Mark Kerr in on that. They could really kick thing up a notch, or make that kick things way the fuck down a notch and make season 5 “celebrity tuf”, I’d be pretty damn entertained by a match between Michael Clark Duncan and Kevin James king of queens. Seriously, it would be fucking hilarious. Then Joe Rogan would take on Al Bundy.
Speaking of Joe Rogan, Dana White was on Bubba the Love Sponge’s show (with Rich Franklin) a few weeks back, and Bubba asked him about the rumors about Rogan fighting a well-known actor. Dana confirmed it, and said that actor turned him down. The man Rogan challenged? Blade himself, Wesley Snipes.
damn, that would’ve been awesome. I wonder who Rogan’s next possible oppent will be? I’d like to see him take on Michael Clark Duncan, that guy is one of those douchebags who sits in the stands at a ufc event acting like he’d be kicking ass if he were in the ring. Please, I’m willing to bet heavily that he’s slow and not coordinated or skilled, I like to see people like that get a dose of reality in the form of an ass whooping. Rogan’s a strong and quick little dude and knows jiu jitsu, and probably has decent standup since I think I heard he used to do tae kwon do or kickbox or something, so despite giving up about 150 lbs I think Rogan would easily win. Who els celeb wise is into this shit? I always see people in the stands but I can’t remember any now.
I’m always seeing Cindy Crawford and Shaquille O’Neal, I think Joe could take, at least, one of them. Although, Cindy’s mole might give him some trouble.
Well last night’s episode had no suprises, save that Ed doesn’t seem to have much speed. He dominated, but he wasn’t really facing much of an opponent. I wouldn’t be suprised if Rory “Not out of the closet yet” Singer took him out.
That fight last night was horrible, very disappointing.
It was a good boxing match, but a bad MMA fight. I know his arm was hurt, but I couldn’t understand why Matt wouldn’t slap on some kind of submission when he got Mike on the ground. I don’t think he expected Matt just to come right after him the whole fight. And even though Matt was obviously gassed after the fight, I couldn’t tell that during the fight.
What are the odds that Bisping and Matt fight each other in the semis?
It was a boxing match, but I wouldn’t say a very good one. Mike Nickels was really a disappointment as a stand-up fighter. Too much boxing, he really should have listened to Shamrock during the fight. Less punches, more kicks and knees.
It seemed the whole fight, Nickels was just throwing wild punches, blind punches, with his head down. And how many times did Nickels turn his back on Matt? Either when he was boxing and he would turn and run away? Or when he was on the ground and he would just ball up and give Matt his back?
I guess in retrospect, I see that Matt was tired during the fight. He often did little or nothing when on the ground and Mike gave him his back. But Mike looked WAY more tired during the fight, so in comparison, Matt seemed fresh.
And I would like to see a fight between Matt and Bisping!
I agree that fight was terrible, all of my Cobra Kai guys could have taken either one of them since those guys have no clue how to box, especially Nickels, he looked like an 8 year old kid goofily throwing punch after punch with his head buried in the sand. Any legit boxer would knock him out in under 10 seconds. Matt wasn’t totally inept but he would get ko’d really easily as well by a legit fighter since he keeps his hands around his waist.

I think the problem is Matt doesn’t really have a submission game. He uses his wrestling to get people to the ground, then just pounds the shit outta them.
…and I gotta believe that all of the editing leads to a Bisping/Matt at some point.
the editing and the fact that the other two light heavys left are terrible fighters do suggest that. I think Bisping will win, Matt’s striking stnading up and on the ground looked subpar, I don’t see him being able to finish Bisping, but I can see Bisping kneeing Matt in the head really easily.
Shamrock is just a dickhead. He says it’s Calib’s fault because he didn’t work on his cardio enough, “and that’s up to him.” Dude, you’re the coach, it’s your responsibilty to train the guy the right way to win the fight, like Tito is doing with his guys. I guess it’s not at all Ken’s fault that any of his guys have lost, is it? Geez. Shamrock hasn’t put in 1/10th of the effort training his team like Tito has.
I wish Calib had won, as I can’t stand that “Team Dagger” idiot. Next week’s fight should be good, and Ed and Rory should be interesting as well.
