The TV Commercial Thread

Apropos of nothing:
I like to pretend the magical sleep butterfly in the ads for Lunesta is actually giving the touch of death.

I always perceived the butterfly was a peeping tom of sorts.

I find the Heineken draft keg ad oddly hypnotic. I think it’s the blissful look on the girl’s face.

Does anyone else get nauseous watching the “Flat Buns” Carl’s Jr. commercial?

Ack.

I get nauseous watching ALL Carl’s Jr ads. Something about the way all their burgers tend to be dripping with sauce like saliva from Alien’s teeth tends to put me off eating there.

Found the Nike commercial I was talking about earlier. Turns out it’s directed by Michael Mann, which explains the music from Last of the Mohicans.

Shawn Merriman & Stephen Jackson - Leave Nothing

It’s not the best quality, but it’ll do. If you catch this on TV, you’ll see that a little bit of the green screen work is slightly off, but I still really dig it. Mostly because of the music…

EDIT: Turns out Mann directed the new LT commercial too.

LT Nike commercial

Dammit, I need a new Mann movie!

Ditto here. I always watch it all the way through instead of flipping the channel. I think it’s 50% the girl, and 50% the weird robotic voice with the music…

Heineken has to be putting subliminal messages in their commercials, because along with this mini-keg the Heineken Light commercial also always kept me mesmerized. I don’t even drink Heineken. Just their Kool-Aid.

already sick of those Nike commercials.

Those commercials freak me the fuck out.

Has anyone here seen the Church’s Chicken commercial with the following hip-hop theme song where the singer repeatedly proclaims:

“I KNOW WHAT GOOD IS! I KNOW WHAT GOOD IS!”

What a grammatical disaster. This commercial belongs in Idiocracy.

I just saw a new Nike commercial on ESPN during the Bengals-Ravens game. You follow Shawn Merriman and Steven Jackson through a series of defensive & offensive plays with some type of Scottish music playing in the background. Pretty neat.

Memo to VISA: Fuck you. I'll use your check card when hell reaches 100 below zero. If I ever see you in a dark alley, I'm gonna decaptitate you and wave my fistfull of one dollar bills right in your bloated vacant staring face.

But then the music would stop!

And how dare you use legal currency and force the automaton behind the counter to actually think! You selfish prick!

2 interesting directions I’ve noticed advertisers moving in:

  1. Branding/sponsoring an entire show. like when a movie is shown without commercials and is instead “brought to you by Ford”. Or, when a brand actually finances the entire creation of a show, which is sometimes successful (Gamekillers on mtv, My Boys on tbs) but sometimes collapses under the strain of the brand’s demands (the never-aired sitcom "The Harry Situation"Wink.

  2. The creative incorporating of regular commercials into a show: Mad Men on amc puts a little 5-second info bumper before each commercial, which doesn’t change the fact that they’re commercials, but goes a little bit of the way to unify the whole experience of watching that show on tv (the show itself is about advertising) as opposed to itunes, tivo or torrent.

I used to know of this site that documented the music used in various commercials…(I mainly used it to locate the names of songs from car commercials, since they basically had the coolest tunes…)

Any idea what it was, or any others like it?? I can’t find it anymore, and don’t remember the url…

I used to check a site called AdCritic, but I think the url was bought by Creativity magazine. I don’t know if that’s the one others were using. These days if I see a commercial with a song I like, I’ll look for it on youtube. The description or comments section will usually contain info on the song/artist somewhere.

Saw this nightmare-inducer whilst watch Everybody Loves Raymond tonight:

The scream is the best.

I believe Dane Cook actually ripped this off.

Clever timing with Halloween…

Hadn’t seen this version with the severing of the limb…
