THE NICE GUYS (2016) - Discussion Thread

Just finished watching this and thought it was an absolute delight. Not quite up there with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, in my eyes, but not far off. “You made a porno where the plot was the point?” was my favorite line by a country mile.

I wish Shane Black was able to make more movies like this.

AThe ending scene with Kilmer and the dad always felt kind of lame to me.

And the song they chose to play over the credits? The fuck? Other than that KKBB is near perfect

That is a Robert Downey, Jr. original!

Seriously. It is.

AWow. That was a pity decision by Black.. Lets let the guy have his song at the end, he’s getting over booze…

Was it me, or did the fall into the pool/onto the sidewalk gag play way too fast? I swear in the trailer it was done in slow motion but it went over in the blink of an eye in the film. I wanted that dragged out forever!

And I just want to get some opinions on what Black was going for in the final scene with Healy - he’s drinking again, but the feel of the scene is breezy success with him being added to the PI outfit, so tonally I was at a loss (the only time I felt that way in the film, so I feel like I missed something).

Best scene in the film for me was Gosling doing his OUTSTANDING Lou Costello from “Hold That Ghost” impression with the dead body. I was on the floor.

I think Black was purposely doing the opposite of the traditional “alcoholic hero swears off the booze for good” ending for comedic purposes. Which the movie sort of supports since March’s alcoholism never really gets in the way of his skills as a detective. And it does tie back to the almost nihilist vibe of the ending. Honestly, to go through all that and having the bad guys win Chinatown-style would probably drive any sane person to drink.

Also, the reason as to why Healy doesn’t drink is never revealed to us. So it might not be a bad thing. I rarely drink myself and not cause I’ve ever had a problem with it…I just don’t like being drunk and who I am when I am drunk. Might be a similar case here. Cinema’s just trained us to equate ‘Character who doesn’t drink’ with ‘Recovering Alcoholic’.

Another bit I absolutely adore;

Kid: So you wanna see my dick?

March: I ALREADY PAID YOU TEN BU-what am I even saying?

and March throwing the revolver through the window NEVER fails to crack me up.

We see him drunk in the movie. It ain’t this.

Based on what? That he’s not angry and sullen? That’s why he’s drinking.

AMany years ago in Spain I heard a bartender ask customers if the film they just watched was “so good you didn’t want it to end.”

That’s how this made me feel. Bloody loved it.

I.

FUCKING.

LOVED.

THIS.

MOVIE.

It’s a $.99 rental on Amazon this weekend, btw.

Just caught this and although it’s a lot of fun I can’t get on the love train.

Gosling just looks and acts too modern to fit in this world, and Crowe can’t deliver Black’s dialogue at all. For a guy known for throwing phones at concierges he’s surprisingly unthreatening in a movie where he plays a tough guy. And I don’t like his bloated look, contrary to Nooj.

In fact, I don’t know if I like either of these actors in most roles. I’m like the one guy out there that didn’t get the hype for Drive, and I haven’t liked Crowe in anything since 3:10 to Yuma.

The daughter, though, she’s real cool. I wish the movie had been like Johnny suggests a few pages back and been a raunchy Nancy Drew.

AAt least I didn’t write a wall of text.

AYou haven’t liked Crowe in anything since 3:10 to Yuma? For real? You must not have seen Noah.
And even I thought he was a highlight of Man of Steel. Dang DOOD, have you no mercy?

ASaw a little bit of Noah. He was alright.

He’s whatever in Man of Steel. Any middle aged white guy with a smidgen of gravitas can play Jor-El.

AHe was more than alright in Noah!

A…this from the BvS EXTENDED CUT guy..

AAfter just reading some of the Ghostbusters thread, I’m not sure I’d call this focusing on a movie’s positives, “finding the diamonds in the rough,” etc. Unless the line about Gosling’s daughter was supposed to be that, I dunno.

AIt’s an average movie by Shane Black standards. It completely wastes Keith David. Not as egregiously as “Road House,” but close.
