I’m just sayin! I’d rather have the movies as is than not have them at all lol. We cool!
Always fraid! I just recently developed an intense dislike of the man. It’s much, much worse with Steven Seagal and Mel Gibson for example. I loathe them and it affects my enjoyment of Under Siege and The Lethal Weapon series (still love The Road Warrior, I’m a fucking hypocrite!).
I can overlook those I loathe (to a point) if the movie is good. What made you start to dislike him? The Horizon fiasco? Just his personality and film presence in general?
For Costner, it’s his personality, something about him really rubs me the wrong way. It’s probably just the crazy shit in my head.
August 4th, 1995:
James Cromwell teams up with his porcine pal, Babe (Ebert review).
Daniel Stern hides out with a group of young campers in Bushwhacked (Almost A Cult Classic video review); the movie is only streaming on the Internet Archive.
Julia Roberts and Dennis Quaid have Something To Talk About (Ebert review).
Tim Roth is a hitman returning to Brooklyn for some family drama and one last hit in Little Odessa (Ebert review).
Set in the near-future of 1999, I present Virtuosity:
It’s a character actor buffet, with Williams Fichtner and Forsythe, Costas Mandylor, plus Kevin J. O’Connor and the debut of Kaley Cuoco.
The film includes a shootout at the brand-new LA Metro Harbor Freeway light rail station.
Ebert review.
I saw VIRTUOSITY twice in theaters. I remember really liking Crowe in this after only knowing him from his chilling performance in ROMPER STOMPER.
“Why are you all so obsessed with Dry Land? I just came from there! It’s fucking AWFUL!”
The obvious choice to me is Brad Pitt.
That’s really good..

Has… has Boris been Costner’s ex wife this whole time?
Costner has never made me question my sexuality. Timothy Olymphant though…that man really knows how to wear a cowboy hat!
Thirty years of “Greenwald, hit the lights!”
Friday, August 11th:
Michelle Pfeiffer stars in Dangerous Minds (Ebert review). It’s possible that the hit soundtrack song might have eclipsed the movie.
Keanu Reeves returns in A Walk In The Clouds (Ebert rave review).
A teenage same-sex relationship blossoms in The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls In Love (Ebert review).
The Kid In King Arthur’s Court features three people with impending fame and fortune, thanks to Titanic, Casino Royale and American Pie. S.F. Chronicle review. Don’t forget to rent the VHS of the sequel.
My roommate at the time went to see this in the theater, but left after the Mickey Mouse short film that preceded it. Runaway Brain 4K scan at the Internet Archive, since Disney has somewhat buried this horror cartoon.
Had no idea Winslet and Craig were in that!
Apparently the great Ron Moody is also in it, and I thought he was surely dead by that point!
For a long time, I had a soft spot for A WALK IN THE CLOUDS. I haven’t watched it in ages, though, and I suspect the amount of cynicism I’ve acquired over the last ten years probably ruins it for me.
Friday, August 18th:
MORTAL KOMBAT!!!
Film Threat magazine review.
Young girls also had a movie adaptation milestone with tween book juggernaut The Babysitters Club, featuring the debut of Rachel Leigh Cook. L.A. Times review. Cook and the cast reminisce in a Vulture magazine oral history.
Ed Burns debuts as a writer/director/actor in The Brothers McMullen. Ebert review.
My Dad took me to see this. For some reason we were both under the impression that RUNAWAY BRAIN was feature length.
Mortal Kombat is underrated and one of the most memorable movies of 1995..
It was also the subject of a really fun watchalong in these parts.
