Waterworld (review)
Operation Dumbo Drop (review)
I have fond memories of Waterworld. I still enjoy it.
I could have sworn that The Net came out earlier in the year. Like…April or May..
I have very fond memories of Jeanne Tripplehorn and Dennis Hopper…very different reasons of course.
Oh for sure. But I honestly just remember that movie fondly overall. It’s not even close to being the disaster that everyone would have you believe. It’s fun and pretty unique and over the top in a lot of good ways and the cast is great..
I guess that I’m open to a re-watch despite my intense loathing of the Costner.
I think he’s just fine in Waterworld. And, in fact, the movie would not have happened without his involvement. There’s no doubt thar it would have been better served by another actor. The same one I would have casted Robin Hood Prince of Thieves with. Mel Gibson. At the time. Obviously nowadays he’s not to be mentioned but…imagine how much more lively both movies would have been with Gibson instead of Costner.
The movie itself is kind of a time capsule of its era..
I’ll say what I said when I saw it in the cinema back in 1995.
They stole their opening premise from A for Andromeda (a UK broadcast that predates the start of Doctor Who) and the end of the film showing the post shooting cast party was a bold choice.
Gibson’s a little too on the nose for Waterworld. It’s already ‘Mad Max but on the ocean.’ I’m having a hard time figuring another ‘star’ of the era who’d fit the role. Russell Crowe was just starting to break out around then, but not enough of a name to anchor (no pun intended) a production of Waterworld’s size.
My brain keeps circling back to Dennis Quaid, which then connects to ‘Wyatt Earp,’ which takes me to the more fun Wyatt Earp movie, ‘Tombstone’ and Kurt Russell, but then there’s 'Tombstone’s Doc Holliday: Val Kilmer, who I think might’ve been kind of perfect for The Mariner.
Denzel? As the Mariner, I mean.
…or maybe Viggo. Even though he wasn’t massively famous yet.
You’re right. Gibson was too on the nose.
I almost suggested Val Kilmer..
Alternate history 1995, if Val Kilmer is playing the Mariner then who plays Chris Shiherlis in Heat? Apparently, the role was offered to Keanu Reeves and he turned it down.
Dennis Quaid…if not Keanu or Val.
Or Viggo..
Viggo would have been great. I was thinking what if Tom Cruise started working with Michael Mann a decade earlier? De Niro, Pacino, and Cruise is a monster line-up. I also like Guy Pearce in a pre-LA Confidential breakthrough.
Waterworld with one of those other actors might have been a different beast of a movie and been as big as they intended. I like Costner in it but I like the movie itself more than I like Kevin Costner in it…if that makes sense. With the right actor and a couple tweaks, Waterworld could have been an all-timer.
Hell…do cast Mel Gibson and make it an actual Mad Max sequel. Mad Max Reaches the Coast.
I’m a big Waterworld fan..
WATERWORLD is pretty good! It’s only regarded as a bad movie because it bombed.
Fantastic James Newton Howard score; his main adventure theme is one of the catchiest little melodies of the '90s.
It only bombed in relation to its ridiculous budget. It actually did alright by normal 1995 standards. I’ll always enjoy it. I enjoy it more than Costner’s Robin Hood. With which it shares many obvious similarities..
I also quite like PRINCE OF THIEVES!
I like them both. But I like Waterworld more..
Freaking Costner ruins everything!
If those movies would not exist without Kevin Costner’s involvement then I’m grateful he was in them and he ruined nothing!
You don’t want to make an enemy of me, fraid!
