The Asian Films Thread (Beware: Long-ass thread)

Blunt: Well perhaps it wasn’t the first script they ever wrote but it was their first filmed. Dunno how they landed it, my guess it that they probably went around proposing it to various companies.

That seems likely. For some reason that method still works in HK, I guess. Because I read numerous stories about how Caucasian actors looking to break into HK action films showed up in HK Int’l Airport with no contacts or referrals, they call up the phone number of local film companies and ouila, they’re in front of the cameras in a matter of weeks (even days). Maybe I should start taking up Tae Kwon Do again

I haven’t even see ROOT yet but it’s supposed to come out on R2 DVD next year so I’ll definitely check it out.

The current Region 0 from Mei-Ah is not too bad, worth the $7 or so from DDDHouse.

Heck I think that is a perfect idea! Great way to study how they do things.

I’m about to blow a load on some HKL discs, the only one I have right now is The Killer, what are the must haves?

I need some old school kung fu fix fast, and I get paid soon, so why the hell not?

Wow…Khitch you gotta tell me how Oasis is.

The review at AZNFilms.com is absolutely glowing.

Heya Tony,

Is the City of Lost Souls Region 1 widescreen?

There is some conflicting responses going around.

Yes it is.

The KFCC board is where you read different, right? Nah, DVDplanet has a habbit of just putting in fullscreen when they don’t get offical specs.

The release date on the other hand, I have no idea about.

Holy Shit, I didn’t know Dreamworks partially financed the film and is bringing it stateside. Excellent news. Hope it finds an audience here.

A tremendous, great film. While difficult to watch at times, I really think it’s required viewing for everybody, not just Asian cinephiles.

Gotcha…thanks my man.

And yea I read stuff over at the KFCC boards.

Ah good to hear.

Was Peppermint Candy any good?

And there is a woman with cerebal palasy in Oasis isn’t there?

Haven’t seen Peppermint Candy yet so I can’t say. I’ve seen the director’s debut, Green Fish, which was quite engrossing (not to mention pretty depressing). My wife who’s seen all 3 of his films says that Oasis is the most audience-friendly.

The lead actress, Moon So Ri, does not have CP. Her character does. I can’t imagine a Hollywood actress taking on a role quite like this, and in the way she has.

Ah then that will hit close to home.

Had a brother who passed away several years ago from complications of CP.

Tony, if you’re you looking for HKL kug-fu stuff here’s what I recommend:

Project A (Jackie Chan at his best)
Drunken Master (same as above, but part 2 is better)
Prodigal Son
Once Upon a Time in China 1 and 2
Iron Monkey
Miracles

Khitch is probably gonna disagree with me on that one but stay away from Encounters of the Spooky kind. Also, buy them directly from HKL’s site, they are insanely inexpensive (a lot of them are 9.99£, which makes me insane for not ordering a bunch of them stat. Ah well, maybe after Christmas..)

whew! and by the time i catch up, the thread is a page long.

Tears of the Black Tiger is such a neat flick, a bizarre, whimsical pastel-colored Thai pseudo-western with some Raimi-like camera work and very pretty people. if that sound like something you might be interested in, by all means pick it up.

Tony, Hong Kong Legends stuff is fantastic. i have:

Fist of Fury
Game of Death
Project A
Police Story
Drive
Ninja in the Dragon’s Den
Mr. Vampire
Snake in Eagle’s Shadow
Magnificent Butcher
Jackie Chan - My Story My Stunts

i’d recommend… pretty much any of them. Drive isn’t a HK movie, but it’s fuckin’ GREAT. that one was a pleasant surprise. if you like Dacascos at all, you really need to grab this

they have a bunch of others that i own the cheap HK versions of, but i’m seriously considering upgrading to the HKL versions.

Tell Me Something is decent, but no Seven in my mind. but if you dug it, you may also wanna check out Say Yes (sorta the Korean version of The Hitcher), if only for Joon-Hoong Park’s delightfully creepy performance.

I’m really sorry to hear about your brother, CT. How long ago did he pass? My wife and I have had our share of family tragedies over the years, so I can definitely sympathize. Still, for people like us the holidays can be a time for fondly remembering as well as celebrating.

Blunt, I can’t remember seeing Encounters of the Spooky Kind except for that one scene where Sammo mimics the “Y-M-C-A” arm gestures and the zombie immediately follows suit.

Dave, I have Say Yes coming to me from DVDAsian, substantially based on your recommendation. And the fact that lead actress Chu Sang Mi gets nekkid.

He passed away two years ago last October. Wasn’t the easiest time to say the least. Buried beneath the blossoms. Rather beautiful.

Well thanks for the Time review Khitch…awesome reiew and looks like great things are on the way.

japaneseguitar: That’s horrible news, CT. I lost (when he was a little child) an older brother. Never even knew the guy, but it still hurts. Often wonder how things would have turned out had he lived. My sorrows and sympathies.

I am much the same Guitar cept the opposite. He was my younger brother and though he lived with us for some 13 years he becamse too much to handle at home and too big so we had to send him to a special home for children with CP. He was only 2 years younger and I often wonder what would it have been like had he been in perfect health. Even now I wonder. I do feel like I was robbed in many ways but all I know is he is in a better place and is no longer in pain. Occasionally I will feel remorseful if I see a child like him. Kinda hits me up. Thankfully time has begun to heal the wound. Helped me understand a few things of life as well as awakened a more creative side in me.

I’m a bit in the same situation. My father had a son from his first marriage that died of sudden infant death at one year and a half. Sometimes I wonder what it would had been like if I had gotten to know him. The tricks that life plays on you sometime…

In that case Chris, I think you should definitely check out Oasis. There are some scenes that will hit pretty hard, especially as it deals with society’s treatment and biases toward people suffering from cerebral palsy, but as my father’s high school buddy (who also recently lost his son to the illness) said, this issue needed to be addressed.

Well to move away from the more somber pastures.

Not totally Asian related but I never saw Minority Report…is it worth the buy?
