The Asian Films Thread (Beware: Long-ass thread)

Adam L. Blacksmith: Only other Korean film I’ve seen is Ring Virus. Couldn’t hold a candle to the Japanese original, although I enjoyed RV’s equivalent of the Takayama Ryuji character. Just a totally antisocial bastard.

That’d be Jin Young Chung.

Butt ugly to boot, but quite the character actor.

Also terrific as the dogged detective in Guns & Talks, and in Hi Dharma as a kung fu buddhist monk.

Soon to be seen in Wild Card (2003) as a hard-boiled veteran cop.

No, how the hell did you manage to post the identical message twice, but 3 minutes apart?

Music Plaza had a sale this weekend. Korean manufactured Heat DVD and a bonus choice of Shiri or The Mission (Joffe edition) for $18.47. I gots The Mission.

I win again, CT wink

Did Bichunmoo ever get the deleted scenes put back into the movie on DVD?

They say that clears up a lot of holes that are in the story of the theatrical version.

Smart bet

Heh yea responded to that.

Is the Joffe edition of The Mission better then the RE that I got?

Yea it should because this thread should get more viewership then what the Hey Khitch thread. Only the diehards knew about the great powers of Khitch.

Now the rest of the world will too.

Not sure about Bichunmoo’s deleted scenes, as I haven’t had the chance to probe disc 2’s extras. Maybe on a future rainy day (like today, wow)…

By the Joffe edition, I meant Roland Joffe’s The Mission, the Cannes winner from 1986(?) starring Jeremy Irons and Robert Deniro. Haven’t watched it in a while, and since I already own 2 different versions of Shiri, why not?

I *heart* these threads.

And Khitch.

Misleading!

And wow it is raining!

I’m soaked from lunch.

Ah and for Bichunmoo I thought it was mentioned that the actual deleted scenes were put right back into the movie on one DVD version. Heaven forbid it be the HK version.

The board has been missing some Heart jokes.

The DJ Dylan kind and the loooove kind.

I bask everyday in the love that is the CHUD boards. No need for Christmas turkey or fruitcakes when you have CHUD

Any of you seen Tears of the Black Tiger? It’s released here December 25th but I might have a chance of catching just before the end of the theatrical run. Worth the effort?

Haven’t seen it. Looks interesting. And I know Khitch or Dave have seen it and gave their recommendation.

It’s on my list of must buy PAL discs when I finally upgrade to a better region free player, but by that time Miramax probably would have tainted it.

I know Dave gave it his Seal of Approval.

Here’s a review, courtesy of those swell fellas over at KFC Cinema:

Will try to catch it then.

Btw, was rereading the previous thread and came upon your comments about The Touch and Running out of Time. Did you know they were writtent by a couple of Frenchies?

Looked them up under imdb.com, and I see the same team did Tsui Hark’s Black Mask 2 as well.

I thought they provided a commentary for one of the DVD releases of ROOT (maybe the US Taiseng version?) but I may be mistaken.

Funny, no listed film credits prior to ROOT, which doesn’t seem correct.

Probably because ROOT was their first script wink (which received the HK award for best script if I’m not mistaken).

I’ve talked a good deal with Julien Carbon because he went on the same chatroom I did. Really great guy, very open to discussion on a lot of topics. I really like him. I remember we used to shower him with questions about the release of Black Mask. I also recall that when I read the first negative review of The Touch on AICN I talked to him about it and his answer was “well don’t put the blame on us”.

Haven’t seen him for a few months though, must be busy working on a new script or some such.

ROOT has a commentary.

That WAS their first script? Interesting. Do you know the backstory on how they landed the gig in the first place?

I think that while the major cause of The Touch’s disappointment/failure is due to the unconvincing effects, flat direction and one-dimensional acting, the script really didn’t help it much to begin with. Except for Dane Cook’s hit/miss dialogue which I would assume was improvised.

Granted, the basic storyline probably didn’t give them much room to work with, right off the bat. I know I wouldn’t be able to write a better screenplay about a troupe of highly skilled circus performers who are entrusted to guard a sacred scroll which bestows unlimited powers to its possessor

Well perhaps it wasn’t the first script they ever wrote but it was their first filmed. Dunno how they landed it, my guess it that they probably went around proposing it to various companies. I’ll try asking people in the know or I’ll ask it directly to Julien if he ever shows up again.

I haven’t even see ROOT yet but it’s supposed to come out on R2 DVD next year so I’ll definitely check it out.
