Anyway, I watched all of Season One, about half of Season 2, and a smattering of other episodes from later seasons, and guess what…I don’t love the show.
I just didn’t care for the “hip” dialogue, the stilted, unbelievable characters, the “acting,” or the rather lame storylines. Like I said, I didn’t think the show was bad, it’s just nowhere near as good as the diehard fans made it out to be.
I was once a person who mocked Buffy watchers.
I was told by a friend that it was really a good show. I would catch maybe 10 minutes while eating at the student food court now and then… and it looked painfully awful (made me think of Charmed and 90210 like some of you have commented).
I told my friend this, and they told me to watch an entire episode. I watched a random episode on tv, no luck. Still didn’t like it.
Then, they were doing a Buffy marathon on FX, and I started taping them, so I was able to watch multiple episodes in a day if I wanted. And I really, really like the series. I’m not a crazy, die-hard fan… just a 27 year old man (boy?) who started liking Buffy about 4 years ago.
I think you really need the continuity of the series, the understanding of the characters both in personality and just in terms of what has come before. And, you need to understand the world of Buffy in a more abstract sense to truly enjoy the series.
I’m trying to get at the idea that the world is a silly, intentionally overly melodramatic world that walks a fine line between not taking itself seriously at all, but at the same time allowing for serious issues and feelings to arise. If you can’t accept that basic premise, you will probably never see Buffy as anything more than Charmed with wittier dialogue.
I’m not trying to convert anyone, but just trying to shed some light on why I enjoyed Buffy (and Angel) so much. Also, I still have finished watching all of Buffy or Angel (haven’t seen the last half of season 7 of Buffy, and I haven’t seen the last half of Angel season 4 or any of season 5), so I don’t know if my opinions will change any about the series as a whole, but I like what I’ve seen so far.
On a side note, I think Firefly did a much better job of starting off strong (as opposed to Buffy). Buffy needed a little time to get its legs.

She’s an overachieving A student and compulsive rule-obeyer/approval-of-authority-seeker. That’s the joke. It is a comedy.
But I can understand someone not liking the show. Like most geek shit, it appeals to a very specific sensibility. I personally like the witty dialogue that everyone speaks. To me, that’s more fun than listening to the way people talk in real life. But it’s the kind of thing that your either going to like or not like.

I used to constantly make fun of Buffy fans. Including many co-workers who had Buffy posters in their cubicals. I finally gave in when I rented the first three discs of season 1 through Netflix. I kinda got into it. By season 2 I decided to buy the first three seasons. After finishing that, I continued to by a season or two every month. This bled into me buying the Angel series as well. I now have all seasons of both Buffy and Angel. It’s a good comic bookish series. I now have a Dark Willow action figure on top of my computer. And I still don’t like SMG.
In my country, it’s not called Buffy, The Vampire Slayer - it’s called the Willow Show.

I guess you can count me as a non-fan. I have nothing against the fans of this show per se but it just seemed too self conscious to me. I also didn’t like the fights but that’s probably just the HK action purist in me.
Joss Wheddon is the only artist i have ever seen that could turn the concept of Hot Girl on Girl action and make it look like two cuddly little fluffy bunnykins snuggling in a warm and nurturing den of sugar flowers and butter drops.

And i agree with what was said about each and every single character was “The Wittest Person Alive”. These people were not real characters they were just one liner factories.
Some of the episodes were really great…there are about half a dozen i watched over the years that really did seem like it was trying, but over all…i think its pretty lame…its definitely adolescent level stuff.
And for all Wheddons ballyhooed creativity it really annoyed me that for the most part the Menace and Threat was usually just conquered with brute force.
Grown men should not be watching this show.
Firefly was cool though.
I can’t really say I dislike “Buffy” since the total number of hours I have seen of the show would be zero. I always heard a lot of praise for the program but not enough to convince me to watch it. I should try to check out “Firefly” at some point.

As a sort-of Buffy fan, this too is how I see the show. I’ve only watched the first three seasons so far, all on dvd. Each time I digested the entire season set within a 3-day span, it’s very addictive watching, like Desperate Housewives.
But I can see how people who don’t start from (or near) the beginning can’t like it. I didn’t really like it watching a single episode either. Since I’ve watched the first three seasons I’ve seen a couple of later season sydicated repeats, and out of context (of the season/storyline/character arch) they really, really suck.
This is fantasy, television is fantasy, movies are fantasy. Some portray things in a realistic way, Buffy doesn’t really try. It portrays things in a melodramatic/comedic way, and that’s not going to sit right with some peoples sensibilities of what good drama/comedy is.
And yes, the stunts are weak, the action is pretty bad, the sets sometimes look horrid, the lighting really blows, some of the acting is choppy/ham fisted/cutesy… and yet its still pretty damn enjoyable. I still can’t convince friends of mine nor my girlfriend to watch it. I never even praise the show that much, I just stick a season set in their hands and say “Give it a go” and follow up with them a little later to find that they’re not even willing to try.
It’s just not for everyone. Not every show is… I don’t like the Family Guy… and according to someone “Now THAT is a real TV show”.
Nope, they’re all wrong, Buffy just plain sucks and so does Angel, they were filmed with Hypno vision but thank god, I must be immune because my brother and a few of my ex girlfriends loved this shit.
But before you all call me an asshole, which I am (re: ex girlfriends), know that I enjoy Firefly. Go figure.

You either love the dialogue or you can’t stand it, and loving that is what gets you in at first. Then you watch as the characters are built and built and built, and you start to love the show. The characters become almost real. That’s what makes the fanboys insane; we feel like we’re defending family. This is really a character-driven show, moreso than any other I can think of, and kungfumonkeyboy was dead on.
To the haters: I’m not one to get up in arms, and I have no problem with others disliking things I like. Just know that the show evokes in its fans some of the strongest emotional attachment of anything in television, or entertainment in general for that matter.
I think the reason there aren’t more fans replying to this thread in defense of ‘Buffy’ is because they resent being baited and aren’t even reading it. Me, I’m weak, so here I am.
When I first heard that a Buffy TV show was in the works, I resisted it. I hadn’t cared for the Kristy Swanson movie at all (except for Paul Reubens) and I skipped the first season altogether. Then, one evening, I stumbled across a rerun of the episode where the girl no one ever notices literally turns invisible, and I got it: High School is Hell. Brilliant.
I can see, though, how folks coming from a ‘90210’ reference-point could get turned off. For one thing, they clearly have no taste to begin with.
P.S. Whoever called SMG ‘anorexic’ definitely hasn’t seen the first two seasons. Or as I call them, The Wonderbra Years.
