What are your favorite random-ass bits of comedy that catch you off guard, then are usually added as message board sigs, pruned of all their context? The smaller the better.
“Cut a wide swath, pussy!” - Roxanne
“Fish tacos! This how you do me?” - Pineapple Express
This occurred to me out of nowhere, given how minor it is:
I saw The Family Stone (it was an assignment, I swear!) and there’s this moment where the family is passing around some sort of book. Luke Wilson’s character glances at it, passes it on, and as someone else reads it he mumbles off-screen, “I can’t read.”
Destroyed me. It’s been a while, so I may have completely butchered the description, but it’s The Family Stone, so who cares.
Angelica Huston pointing to the correct location on the map in The Life Aquatic, as well as Dafoe’s, “Not if I don’'t see you first, sonny!” (see sig).
The unsolved, mini (2x2) Rubik’s cube on Fantana’s desk in Anchorman.
Ralph Fiennes’ delivery of the word “pooof” to the one-eyed thief in In Bruges. (Pretty much anything he says qualifies, to be fair)
Tropic Thunder, the look Downey gives after saying “script-book, spit that shit out man”. First he looks like he’s about to burst out laughing and suddenly breaks into this totally possessed stare. It kills me!
People give Intolerable Cruelty shit for being a weaker Coen Bros movie, but it’s still filled with moments of pure gold. Like when Clooney is hiring Wheezy Joe to kill Marylin and Joe asks him “Who’s the pigeon?” Clooney just looks around the room totally freaked out, like he expects ninjas to come rappelling down from the ceiling or something… “The What!!!”
Lots of moments like this in the Adventureland trailer. Especially this one from Kristen Wiig: “This is how we met!”. Wiig’s delivery, Target Lady aside, almost always destroys me.
Jack Crow: You ever seen a vampire?
Father Adam Guiteau: No I haven’t.
Jack Crow: No… Well first of all, they’re not romantic. Its not like they’re a bunch of fuckin’ fags hoppin’ around in rented formal wear and seducing everybody in sight with cheesy Euro-trash accents, all right? Forget whatever you’ve seen in the movies: they don’t turn into bats, crosses don’t work. Garlic? You wanna try garlic? You could stand there with garlic around your neck and one of these buggers will bend you fucking over and take a walk up your strada-chocolata WHILE he’s suckin’ the blood outta your neck, all right? And they don’t sleep in coffins lined in taffata. You wanna kill one, you drive a wooden stake right through his fuckin’ heart. Sunlight turns 'em into crispy critters.
Quite possibly the best left-field description of vampires.
First time I saw it was a shitty cropped bootleg at my friend’s house. It’s said by Brian Fantana, I found out when I bought it later, but I actually thought the gag worked better if no one on screen was saying it.
I thought Tony Shalhoub’s unfazeable character in Galaxy Quest had some good ones. Like the shot of him eating the crackers and cheese during the atmospheric entry.
