Another great episode.
This new apprentice is hilarious. I’m really starting to like his character.
Nate beating the snake to death was funny, too. And his hallucination of Brenda on the rock was interesting.
And if I saw right, Billy and Brenda’s Mom may be coming back next.
The apprentice has been a good addition to the show as has Claire’s tortured artist boyfriend. I’m looking forward to next week and the return of Brenda’s family.
Too late to send ya, Farmer. Durn.

Nate’s still deluding himself and the camping trip may make things fine for a little while, but as soon as they get back to reality, Nate will again feel trapped in his marraige. His dream clearly proves that even though Brenda’s psycho, he still has an inate attraction to her. She’s free spirited and a sexual being – everything Lisa is not, no matter how hard she tries.
I still think Russell will do some fucked up “cutting off ear” type thing because he is just too miserable a human being. Claire will either break his heart or the teacher will drive him mad.
The apprentice guy really creeps me out. Ruth sniffing his hanky freaks me out even more.
David and Keith have been getting along too well lately. Something will happen soon.
The new apprentice’s voice sounds like the HAL 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
This episode was good, but I just wish that Nate would get back with Brenda. Yeah, she was fucked up, but their stuff was classic!

This season continues to get better and better.
Nate and Brenda’s scenes were great. I think by the end of the season Nate will have left Maya and Lisa for her.
It was sorta weird how Russell bought Claire that paint as a gift. It’s almost like he obsessed over her getting it.
Arthur the apprentice is hilarious…his and Ruth’s little side story is nice. I guess next week they kiss or something, at least that’s what the preview suggests.
David and Keith at the brunch was great. And now next week Keith’s friends play paintball with David’s. That’ll be funny.
I’m not usually the kind of guy to say this, but I think this season is way too slow. I have a feeling this would play better for me on DVD, where I could watch a couple of episodes in a row. As it is now, I watch an episode and feel like almost nothing has happened.

It doesn’t help that all of this season’s episodes are 4 or 5 minutes shorter then previous season’s episodes.
Other then that gripe, I feel this week’s episode was damn good. The relationship between Nate/Brenda/Lisa is heating up and next week’s promo looks promising.
It was weird seeing the apprentice as a main character in House of 1000 Corpses this weekend…
Absolutely beautiful episode. It was good to see the entire Chenowith family back. Billy still seems to have some kind of a handle on his problems. Russell’s ‘keepsake’ was rather boring compared to what it could have been, but but it’ll do. I really loved Ruth’s little hallucination of Arthur screaming at her for stalking him. Arthur is becoming such a great character. Just watching him attempt to run was painfully funny. I’m still waiting for some huge event to happen between David and Keith that could or could not severely mess things up between them.
Next week’s episode looks just as great, with Lisa beginning her whole “stay away from my husband” thing while she messes with Brenda.
I love Arthur’s addition to the cast. I think that that character adds alot to the quirkiness of the show. On a side note… $50 for a tube of cobalt blue paint? It’s been a little while since I had bought some, but I don’t recall it being anywhere near that price. Now I need to go to an art store and check it out. Sorry, just a little rant. I think that this season has not been as strong to me as it was in the past, but it is getting better.

I have to agree. I feel like the show keeps setting us up for something, but nothing is coming out of it.
How many times can we watch Nate wonder whether Lisa is really who he wants to be with only to have him ignore the feelings and do nothing about it? I would think after the dream of his dad, he would have had a major wake up call. On top of that, his dream during the camping trip is an obvious sign that he still has really intense feelings for Brenda. And then in this episode, Nate has a fight with Lisa and says that Brenda allows him to be himself and that he feels stifled and judged all the time by Lisa. What more does he need to realize that this isn’t what he wants?!
Arthur is a great character, but he’s still creepy and it still freaks me out that Ruth is so into him. That said, their scenes together were the best scenes all episode.
Russell is definitely going to go postal at some point. He is too obsessed with Claire not to. The paint thing was a sweet gesture, I thought it was appropriate. Claire is his first love and Russell just wants to make her happy.
I sort of like the switcheroo with David and Keith. In the first season, David was miserable and uneasy about his gayness and Keith was happy and go lucky. The second season, David starts to come to terms with himself and Keith starts having some troubles in his personal life and on the job. Now, David is happy and content and Keith is miserable and depressed.
Frederico’s storyline is pretty lame this season. I could do without the Vanessa problems and Rico’s constant whining about doing all the work.
I’m so happy the Chanowitz’s are back. They are far more interesting than the Fishers and hopefully will spark some much needed life into the show.
I may be the only person that really loves this season. I realize this will mean absolutely nothing coming from me, but tonights episode could be my favorite of the entire series. The other episodes have been great but I really dug this episode. Watching the mother run away saying (if I remember correctly) “I’m losing it” was extremely funny.
No, Bateman, you’re not alone in adoring this season, as I find it to be the most dramatically mature season so far. It’s interesting that none – not one – of the couples this season is remotely functional. It’s the *triangles* that seem to have more stability, as particularly evidenced by David and Keith’s little menage a trois in tonight’s episode. This is some thought provoking dramatic architecture.
Next week’s episode looks promising as well, judging from Brenda’s bemused look at discovering Lisa’s identity.

How does David and Keith’s menage a trois show any sort of stability? It, in fact, shows that the progress they thought they were making was just smoke and mirrors. When you take a really hard look at their relationship, its probably the most messed up of any of the relationships on the show.
This episode is easily one of my all-time favorites. It was perfect from start to finish.
I loved that Ruth gave in to her feelings, even at the expense of “going crazy.”
I loved that Lisa stopped playing the victim and took steps to find out what was hindering Nate from fully committing to their relationship. It was especially interesting that Lisa’s friend tried to comfort Lisa by saying, “Nate would never leave you, he adores Maya.”
I loved that David, unlike Keith, made an effort to fit in with his friends. The scene where he baits Keith to come out of hiding on the paintball field by saying, “Sometimes I don’t like talking either” while jumping out from behind the barricades was priceless!
I loved that Claire is finally starting to realize her teacher is insane and that just because he is talented doesn’t mean she has to put up with his crap.
I still could care less about Rico and Vanessa’s problems, but their scenes weren’t as annoying as they usually are.
Daddy and The People were great characters and added so much to the episode.
I think the line “you’re lucky I love you” is definately worth discussing. That could be the most twisted line the show has thrown at us in a while. I love trying to discover the motivations of the characters through seemingly throwaway lines like that. I loved the look on Rico’s face when he heard that the kids all had lice. Priceless.
Forgot about that. That line is seriously fucked up.

I completely agree with you on the lack of interest in Rico and Vanessa. This is the most contrived conflict on the show, as if the writers are still flailing around for some sort of groove to drop the characters into – thus far, the most uninteresting subplot.
I loved the fact that Daddy and the People were conscious jabs at cults, especially Scientology. Notice that Leon Rippy, who played Daddy, bears an uncanny resemblance to religious con-man extraordinaire L. Ron Hubbard? And one of the wives even mentioned guarding the body from government agents and aliens. Priceless. The show always features terrific Southern California in-jokes.
Speaking of references, a couple of weeks ago, when Nate was buying those CDs and had that vision of a harping Lisa, I was pleased to see that the music store he was shopping at was none other than Atomic Records – they used both the exterior and interior. I live a block away from that store, and I had no idea that they’d shot there.

I still disagree. The one thing David and Keith have never had to worry about was their sex life. No matter how unhappy they’ve been with each other, they’ve always been able to get it on. In fact, they often use sex to take out their aggression. Remember last season when they got in a huge argument? Keith threw David against a wall, David pushed Keith back, and they ended up wrestling then having sex right there on the living room floor.

Nate and Lisa are both fucked up indeed, but their problems mirror any normal realtionship. They got married for the wrong reasons, the husband feels trapped in the marraige, the woman insecure about the relationship. Problems that millions of people deal with everyday. Although Nate and Lisa have personal issues to deal with on their own, the big problems they are having stem directly from being married to each other.
David and Keith’s problems run much deeper. They don’t stem so much from the relationship per se (although there is plenty of tension there), they stem from really deep personal issues. For most of the beginning of the relationship, David was having trouble dealing with the fact that he was gay. He wouldn’t go out in public with Keith, he hadn’t come out to his family…he had severe identity issues that overrode everythnng in his life, including his relationship. The good thing is that David has worked through alot of those issues and can now focus on his relationship with Keith.
Keith, on the other hand, has severe issues with his anger. We learned last season that it goes much deeper than just an inability to deal with is rage. A lot of the way Keith deals with people stems from his really dysfunctional relationship with his parents and sister. Like David, these problems engulfed Keith’s life, getting him fired as a cop and spilling over into his relationship with David. Unlike David though, Keith refuses to really deal with his problems. He hates all the “talking” and doesn’t really get how his inbility to work out his problems are affecting his relationship. Until he does that, their realtionship problems can never progress and that’s why I say it’s the most seriously fucked up. At least with Nate and Lisa, you can see a light at the end of the tunnel.
