Sea of Thieves (Xbone, PC)

ASince it’s crossplay, you guys will most likely see me on here at launch on my Peasantbox One S. I’ll try to get my mic situation sorted by then.

Will do, definitely. I had a watch of Tzu’s stream for a bit earlier. Looks like the right kind of chaos to me.

Sitting at my office desk listening to the stream from yesterday whilst working. Just got to the section where Tzu gets drunk so he can throw vomit over me, only for the ship to suddenly get attacked, and he’s so drunk he can’t get downstairs to repair the boat. “I can’t get down there! I can’t get down there!”

The people behind me probably wonder what’s making me chuckle so much.

That section had me laughing heartily. Instant karma.

Maaad propers to Tzu for getting us all together and hosting that stream.

Nice video, D,T. Well done, especially, on pointing out the embarrassing behaviour that some gamers displayed over the last few days when talking to Rare online.

On a separate note: Some people data-mined the Beta and found animation descriptions for the Kraken which involve it wrapping its tentacles around ships and possibly swallowing individual players. One of the scenes that really captured my imagination as a kid was this one from Warlords Of Atlantis (fast forward to about two minutes into the clip):

If it’s anything like this, I’ll be (a) horrified and (b) thrilled.

I really don’t think the beta even scratched the surface on what we’ll see in the final game. People complained that the beta was too empty, but I think that’s just Rare playing things close to the chest.

Agreed. I mean, it took us four hours to do a bunch of low level chest-finding quests on a map that’s smaller than the one we’ll get at release. Add two other factions - one of which includes not only capturing rare wildlife but looking after them on the voyage (I think you have to feed them specific fruits or something), and one which will involve storming through skeleton-filled islands to capture the skulls of boss NPCs - as well as all of the cosmetic stuff, the higher level quests which are probably more complicated and interesting, the world events (whatever those may be), and all of the other stuff that Rare wants to surprise us with, and I’m sure there will be lots of stuff to keep folk busy.

Awesome! I may have to pick your brain about cameras and audio in the future. I have been digging online all day trying to figure out why the audio is so low on the stream and why the echo was present.

This can only mean one thing.

FACE CAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM INCOMINGGGGGGGGGGGGG

Yeaaahhh… No.

That will be a long time off.

Audio on the other hand?

I use an Audiotechnica AT2035 mic, and a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface. Not the cheapest stuff out there, but I found a deal on amazon, and I was all-in on trying the whole Youtube thing. Mostly because I needed a creative outlet, and I missed editing.

The AT2035 is great, but it could sound better if I wasn’t in an apartment with only tile and hardwood floors and no acoustic panels or soundproofing to speak of. I record the sound separately with Audacity and record the video with a Logitech 930e – which is honestly kinda shitty. I wasn’t aware that it’s considered a “business” model webcam, so there’s no drivers or software - it’s just plug and play. A lighting kit helps, but it’s still got some focus issues (which you can see in the SoT video, actually), and the green screen effect isn’t as sharp as it could be as a result. It’ll get replaced with a proper camera when I get deeper into all of this.

If you want to put the money into it and make streaming a legit hobby or even a side gig, the AT2035 and Focusrite will serve you very well. I don’t know what’s causing the echo effect in the stream, though. That could be any number of factors at play.

Buy some rugs! Big Grin

Right now it is more of a fascination for me because of the culture surrounding it. People half my age are making three times what I make because people(my kids generation) are paying them to, what I have said in the past , “play video games all day.” I have learned just trying to set up the stream we did and for the D2 Raid that this is more than “getting paid to play video games all day”, this is a legit broadcasting job and so much of it appears to be self-taught vs a communications degree that might have landed someone a radio or TV gig back in the day. That fascinates me from a phenomenon perspective.

I don’t feel like I have the vidya game skills to make this a full time gig nor do I feel like, especially after listening to myself on the SoT stream, I have the voice/personality to make this something big. If lightning struck I wouldn’t turn my nose up at it. But my biggest hurdle I think is that my brain moves so much faster than my mouth. I am thinking of 20 things and I always falter when I need to say something specific in the moment and I can’t pull the correct words out because I am already five minutes down the road in my thought processes.

Hobby is another thing entirely. I am unable to have hobbies. If I even remotely understand something I become an “expert” at it. So far this seems to have a steeper learning curve to get to expert than I will most likely be willing to tolerate. I may drop some money into it and try it and then post group things like we did for the enjoyment of folks we know from here. Then I may leave it to gather dust unless my kids show some knack for it and I will support them through.

But for right now I want to understand the technical aspect behind it and put out something that entertains Chewers. If it gos anywhere great, if not, I am fine.

AIf you’re serious about becoming a mega youtuber or twitch streamer start laying the seeds now.

Be like Joshua Tzu:

*totally did not go back and check my Twitter feed when D.T. mentioned following me there too*

*Goes to check Twitter to make sure he’s following Tzu.*

I got that email!

And thus the Beta is over and the game is gone… at least until March.

For those interested, the review embargo for the full version of the game lifts on the 13th of February. Obviously we’ve all formed our own opinions on the game by playing the Beta, but it’ll be nice to finally read a list of what features are in the full version.

The photo of this board, providing a summary of the Beta, was apparently taken at Rare HQ.
