Sea of Thieves (Xbone, PC)

It looks like people who get a code to punch in (from, say, Amazon) are having better luck getting into the beta. Those of us morons who got it directly from the Windows store are the ones getting the “too soon” error when trying to log in.

Thanks, Microsoft!

Were you able to at least DL it? I had to go through some fucking hoops to even get it to do that. Still got 7GB left.

That Microsoft store is awful, isn’t it? I saw on Discord that you had the same problem I did, where it wasn’t clear that one version of the game works on both xbox AND PC. Very confusing. (This write-up states that if anything is going to doom the game, it’ll be the Microsoft Store and the Xbox App).

I only realized a few minutes ago, thanks to Reddit, that I’m meant to download the separate “Sea Of Thieves Beta” that’s in the Microsoft store (as I assumed the main game was also how I access the Beta), so I’m now in the process of downloading that. Unfortunately I’ve got to leave for work so I won’t know if I can access it until I get home this evening.

ETA: I don’t know how much of the stream you guys watched yesterday but, when I tuned in before bed, three of them had drunkenly (as they were consuming alcohol throughout the stream) locked the fourth in the Brig and he, in return, had ragequit but was trying his best to claim (both to them and his audience) that he had to go anyway. “No, no. I didn’t ragequit. I DID NOT. I had a great time but I’m late for dinner with mom. We’re eating out tonight. I’m fine. I didn’t ragequit. I-DIDN’T-RAGEQUIT. I was fine with you guys putting me in the Brig. I WAS FINE WITH IT.” Two of the other streamers were responding with drunken "We love you, man!"s whilst the third wasn’t paying any attention as he was too busy drunkenly running from one place on an island to another digging for treasure and yelling “Yo ho ho!” occasionally over everyone else’s conversation.

Very funny.

ETA 2: Jeebus. All the people on the subreddit moaning about Rare locking away two of the factions, and the ship / character customization options, for the Beta is making me roll my eyes. It’s basically “Yes, we know this is the Beta but you still should have given us access to the full game anyway!” I mean, the entire point of the game is currently based around getting better-looking gear for your character and ship, so they’re hardly going to have that in the five day Beta, are they?

AI got it up and running. Clicked the single player experience to run around the starting island a bit. Hope I can pick the four man crew next log in. If not, I’ll uninstall and reinstall and go shantying with y’all.

And I saw that part with Lono. All good humor has an element of truth to it and all that. He normally is done about that time of day and usually does have to go eat with his wife and kids but he also has the lowest stream viewership/sub-count of the four. He has some inadequacy issues about his skill level that comes up some times so he was probably 80/20 on for real needing to go and rage quitting. It was the second time they had locked him in the brig that day and you can’t get out for a set amount of time, by which time he would have needed to end his stream apparently so he just quit out.

But, yes, the other three were sliding out of their chairs drunk by then.

I’m surprised they didn’t come up with four-person streaming earlier. I guess there are only a few games it’s useful for, but I can see it becoming more popular in the future.

Just saw this clip on Twitch. A guy falls off the boat and his shipmate is meant to turn the boat around and come back for him… only his shipmate’s mother walks in and demands that he turn off the computer immediately. “Yo mom! Can I talk to her? [*Hears mother ordering the machine to be switched off and starts to panic*] No, no, no! Five more minutes!!!” Ha.

Yeah, the Sea of Thieves Closed Beta is a different download than the game itself. I had to install the Xbox Insider app to see it and download it. That could have been made clearer, I think.

Anyhoo, it’s installing now.

I’ll be back home in about two hours. Hopefully I’ll be able to try it out tonight.

Also, after watching all those Twitch streams, I found out for the first time that if you have Amazon Prime you can get Twitch Prime for free. Didn’t know that. Also, not sure what Twitch Prime does for you, but I have it now, dammit!

You unlock exclusive stuff like Twitch Prime-only skins or weapons in certain games (Fortnite, Warframe, PUGB etc) and you basically get a ‘free’ subscription. If there are any Twitch channels you enjoy watching, you can subscribe to them without paying anything and they still get the financial benefit (as Amazon basically pays them instead).

Oh, also no ad breaks during streams!

What Saxon said. Every 4-6 weeks they change up the games that are offering free stuff for. I have gotten Overwatch loot boxes, in-game currency and cards for NBA 2K17, I missed the Twitch exclusive PUBG clothing months ago. They are always offering Hearthstone cards, and currently they are offering Paladins skins, COD supply drops, Hearthstone cards and Madden 18 Legends players.

If you subscribe to someone you like, the Twitch prime sub dose NOT auto renew so you have to click it manually each month if you want to stay with the same channel.

ARGH! I’m still getting the “too early” notice. I have two separate items I can launch, Sea of Thieves and Sea of Thieves Closed Beta. The closed beta was about a 17 gig download. Neither works.

ARGH again.

Players who have digitally pre-ordered Sea of Thieves from the Windows or Xbox Store:

We are aware that players may still be receiving the “too early” error message when launching the Sea of Thieves Closed Beta. We rolled out a temporary fix to address the issue for most impacted players last night, however we are also working on a longer-term solution for the remainder of the Closed Beta to accommodate all customers whom have pre-ordered digitally.

This fix will unfortunately have the side effect of removing the Closed Beta entitlement for digital pre-order customers. However, we have enabled players who have pre-ordered digitally to acquire the game through the Xbox Insider Hub app on Xbox One or Windows 10. To prevent any further disruption to your Closed Beta access, we advise all customers who have pre-ordered digitally to enrol into the Sea of Thieves Closed Beta through this app.

We apologise for the inconvenience. The fix will unfortunately take some time to take effect fully, and we are rolling out a temporary solution to allow most players to launch the game in the meantime. The Insider Hub access to the game will be in place by 8pm GMT (12pm PST) today, 25th January. The full fix will be in place by 9am GMT/1am PST tomorrow, 26th January.

Jacob,

Try this link. I did not even have a DL/Install button from the pC but when I went to that link it was there and I was able to DL and Install and get the game running. A link like this has been working for the vast majority of folks according to the Google’s.

If that doesn’t work, I’ve just found a workaround thanks to Reddit.

  1. Go to the Microsoft Store and download the app “Xbox Insider Hub”.

  2. Once it’s downloaded, find the Insider Content screen and you should see “Sea Of Thieves”.

  3. Go to that page and you’ll see a Join button. Don’t do anything else but make sure not to close the app.

  4. Go to the Microsoft Store and cancel your order (there’s a Cancel Item button under the Purchases screen).

  5. Once your order is cancelled, return to the Xbox Insider Hub app and click on that Join button.

  6. Go to the Sea Of Thieves Beta and hit play.

Worked for me, and it’s pretty obvious why Rare aren’t advertising this fix. I’ll obviously have to re-order the game after the Beta, but it’s a small price to pay for not seeing that Too Early message anymore.

That’s listed as no longer available.

EDIT: I canceled my Microsoft Store order and bought it through Amazon instead. They sent me a code for the closed beta, which I’m (re)downloading now. This one should work.

Only played a few minutes to test everything was working but sailing by yourself at night is kind of eerie.

Damn, Jacob. That sucks.

These guys are back at it.

By the way guys, what are your xbox live account names, so that I can add you to my Friend’s List?

Mine’s MrSaxon7907

Don’t think there are any numbers.

*EDIT* Apparently they are extending the Beta for two more days.
