Created & Written by Robert Kirkland it was originally a comic book (I had not read it) it follows a man living in West Virginia, starting to socialize again after some disturbing events in his life. Through flashbacks we see that his mother went crazy when he was a young boy, beat him and locked him in a pantry while she went wild in the house, having fits of anger and smashing stuff up. We see that his wife too suffered a similar problem, attacking their child.
He hooks up with the local Minister (played by UK actor Phillip Glenister, with a flawless American accent–which is weird as he has a distinct and heavy British accent) who has been asked to attend to a local boy acting out the same way. Is the boy just having some emotional problems or is he somehow possessed. Turns out the latter, and appears to be the same effects as the main character’s Mother and wife. Together with the holy man they attempt to help the lad.
The first episode was compelling and well acted, and the flashbacks came brief and were easy to plug into the current timeline events.
Loved the first episode, directed by THE GUEST and YOU’RE NEXT director Adam Wingard. Very eerie atmosphere, some truly horrific images and compelling performances by Fugit and Glennister. Excited to see where it goes…
This was great, count me as a big fan of Wingard’s other work. The characters in the pilot managed to hook me, with just enough going on under the surface that I want to know more. I also love Reg E Cathey showing up in things.
That’s too bad because it feels nothing like Kirkman’s other tv adaptations. This is a solid pilot and the characters didn’t immediately make me want to punch myself in the face.
I’ve been looking forward to this all week. Looks great and Wingard’s YOU’RE NEXT is one of my favorite horror flicks of the last couple of years so I’m not surprised the pilot is solid.
Shockingly good pilot. I fully expect it to turn into a shitshow - that is the Kirkman way - but for now I’m totally in. I already like the characters more than any of those on TWD.
Yeah. I’m not the biggest Walking Dead fan in the world, in fact I actually hated most of the TV show, but this was a pretty promising start. Good horror shit, too.
Yeah, this was a really good pilot. I thought Patrick Fugit was especially good as Kyle. It’s pretty tough to take a withdrawn, socially awkward and broken character, and make them engaging enough for an audience to want to follow, but Fugit did a great job with it.
Not sure how they can make an entire series out of this concept (as I’ve never read the books) but I definitely want to see what happens next.
Loved that shot of the bicycle woven into the roots of the tree; an image of a childhood interrupted without warning and never reclaimed.
This show is really damn good. So good, in fact, that I have trouble believing Robert Kirkman was involved.
Also: Much praise to this show’s composers. The score over the last two episodes have been quite wonderful and fully complimented what was unfolding on-screen.
