MONARCH: LEGACY OF MONSTERS (Apple) Godzilla Show!

I basically agree with this.

Nice interview here:

Kind of didn’t realize this show is only a month away. I’m getting pretty excited.

Yeah, I’m pretty stoked for this series. I’ve liked everything in the Monsterverse so far, so it feels like chances are good this’ll hit me the right way.

Some of these new monsters look very cool, I’m getting more excited about this.

I’m not seeing enough to make me want to subscribe.

That shot of the flying monster seen through the trees is ripped straight from Gamera 1995.

First two episodes dropped today, and my inner geek was well and truly satisfied.

A couple of creepy moments caught my attention.
The bus going off the bridge and the climbing insectoids.

Actually enjoyed the human elements so far. Can never have enough Russell.
Stoked for the next one and the Monsterverse expands a little more.

Please excuse my gibberish.

It’s double the Russell!

Hope to start watching over the weekend.

I just finished the second of the two episodes available.

They are really making the most of the “legacy” aspect, with two different groups of characters United in different ways. The opening credits set the theme with a heavy emphasis on duality, reflected in the two halves of the Monarch logo.

The post “G-Day” world building is fun too.

I suppose I just hope the central mystery is going somewhere interesting, that isn’t a plot point from the movies. And considering the movies go to Hollow Earth, it’s hard to see what could be so shocking a mystery.

But overall I’m really enjoying it so far.

Jesus, Wyatt looks soooooo much like his dad.

The co-creator did a well received run on…Daredevil, right?

A really good visual analysis of the first two episodes. There appears to be a persistent, deliberate visual theme of symmetry/duality.

Yeah definitely. The opening credits go all in on that aspect.

Having started that video, I really gotta watch Skull Island again. The cast is nuts.

Ok further into the video… and yeah this is impressively shot and designed.

I like all the Monsterverse movies. I prefer the Monsterverse to the MCU to be quite honest because the MV hasn’t disappeared up its own ass and doesn’t (at least thus far) feel the need to ram its content down the gullet of the world 24/7/365 and has the good grace to not act like it’s contributing something profound to the history of cinema. It just pleasantly pops back up every couple years and I’m always pleased when it does. Amazing how you miss an IP more when it feels like it actually goes away for a little while. King of the Monsters and Rise of Skywalker’s WW box office grosses would be switched in a sane and just world.

All that being said, streaming is the bane of my existence but I need to see this. Rather it be a film but hey…it is what it is..

Three episodes in and I’d say it’s fine. It’s fine. Not bad by any means, and in terms of consistency and writing human beings, it’s ahead of almost every D+ series. But for a series about giant monsters, there’s certainly a dearth of them in the show thus far.

I’m with the show to the end (unless it shits the bed HARD in the next few episodes, which seems unlikely). But it’s not grabbing me as much as I’d hoped it would.

I like star mole Titan. Cool touch.

But…there’s more than one Godzilla? And he can be killed by an H bomb? I thought being impervious to that stuff was kind of his thing, no?

Nah, that’s our Godzilla. He wasn’t killed by the Bikini Atoll test. He just bugged out after the detonation and before the cloud cleared, so everybody who witnessed it THINKS they got 'im.

It’s a basically an expanded version of the scene glimpsed in Godzilla 2014. Both the credits and the old footage they show Aaron Taylor-Johnson mid film. “They were trying to kill it.”
