If I’m alone on this then just let this thread die or delete it, but I think there is way too much info being talked about in the other thread that isn’t based on info provided in the episodes. Speculation is fine in this thread, with the only rule being that it should be based on information presented within the episodes that have aired. Thanks in advance for cooperating.
People were throwing around what they knew about Locke and Rousseau for the entire season 1 thread and nobody complained. I’m not trying to be a prick, but how is what was being done in the season 2 thread any different?
It’s one thing to look up someone’s name (Rousseau/Locke) and discuss how that might be relevant to the show. Without spoiling for others what was spoiled for me, it was the discussion about (invisotext): bizarro Jack and genetic mirrors that went too far.
Also, if you look at the last few post in the Season 1 thread, there are more than a few people who said that reading through that thread was too spoilerific for them. This thread is an attempt to let people discuss the show without having to unwittingly read something that they didn’t want to know about. And like I said, if people aren’t interested in this thread, they don’t have to post in her and it’ll die a quick death.
I am one of those other people. Shocked someone else feels the way I did.
So, Diva, I guess it might just be you and me talking about the wonders of Lost without knowing eight episodes in advance.

The thread was helpful in regards to how attentive the viewers were- I didn’t catch the name of the guy who died in the ER as Shannon and Boone’s (likely) father myself. Damn, I miss having a DVR to go over episodes in closer detail.
I was also completely spoiled by the quality of the DVD set- having it with no commercials, all in one place with no weekly wait, letterboxed…it would have been perfect if I had avoided Devin’s “Serenity” poster review…
So, for Diva and anyone else who wants to keep this thread alive- Desmond couldn’t have been on the island much more than a few years. The facility below the hatch is clearly very old- who made it and who lived there before.

My biggest “WTF” moment with Desmond was the whole “trip around the world” comment. Maybe the island is some place that he comes-and-goes from at will? Is it possible he’s one of Rousseau’s crew? Does he have any connection to The Others? If not, do they even know about him?
What a gut punch of an episode. I love how the show answers one mystery only to create so many more questions.
The only way that Desmond could be a part of the French crew is if he then left the island to visit Jack on the steps of the stadium.
He could only have been there a few years.

He said “race” around the world. In this show that could mean something entirely different. I don’t think Desmond was part of Roussau’s crew, however I do think he knew he’d be meeting Jack again. Remember he said, “See you in another lifetime.”
Also, I think even though we’ve seen The Others (well, I’m not entirely convinced those Walt-stealing hillbillies really are The Others) and the inside of the hatch, I still think there is a larger, mystical power at work here. Fate played a large role in bringing these specific people together. We’ve seen many of these characters crossing paths in the flashbacks. In this particular episode, for example, the guy who died in the car crash was Shannon and Boone’s father (or so it seems based on his name). In previous eps, we’ve learned Sawyer met Jack’s father in a bar, Hurley owned the box company Locke worked at, Sawyer was in the police station when Boone was getting interogated, etc.
And let’s not forget that we don’t know how Ethan Rom (aka "Other Man"
plays into all this. He clearly was not part of the Hillbilly crew and Roussau said she killed her entire crew, so he wasn’t part of hers either. And of course there are the numbers, which have come up again and again, even before they crashed on the island.
I cannot even begin to speculate on what is going on, but the hatch with all the computers as well as that giant electrical cord going into the ocean means that there is some mastermind behind the island’s myteries. But there is definitely some mystical power controlling these castaways lives as well. I’m of the opinion that science and faith are working simultaneously here.

I think a pretty interesting breakthrough (based solely on screen caps info) has just been made on the other lost board. I’d say check it out (look for the red pictures) before things you dont want to know are spoiled.

Of course not, thats why I came in here to post it, I thought this thread might want to have that info on it.
Ok, so some interesting stuff I saw while rewatching:
Firstly, I think Desmond works in the hatch. He gets up, does his morning routine blah blah blah. But if you notice carefully, there are several things to note:

he’s by himself in the hatch. Notice the ping pong table (see pic) in the background with one wall pushed up (for solo play). Also, later when he turns off the lights, the ping pong table being half folded up is more obvious. More evidence, theres no one in the other bunk bed, the dishes have piled up immensely, the diner table has crap all over the other seat, implying only one person lives there.

The company logo - several shots during the opening show a company logo, including the medicine cabinet, the walls of the tunnels, and even desmonds jumpsuit. i have included several pics, and wonder if anyone with some photoshop knowledge can make out the words or logo.

On the mural that shows the number 108, there are several drawings of a white house. here is a pic of one of them. What is the siginificance of these houses?

It is artificial light that is creating his daylight effect. Notice the broken panes of glass in the dome on the right side of the following pic, and the exposed halogen tubes.

Some people have speculated the logo says the word “Dharma”, and that the picture is either a yingyang, a snake, or a swan. I presonally think it is a swan.
And I also think the “R” in the middle of the word “Dharma” is superscripted, or higher on the line than the rest of the letters.
I’m not sure how to do it, but I’d repost that large picture of the painting that CApt. America posted. That is completely within the plot and can really make your head spin.

Just because Desmond is alone in the hatch now, doesn’t mean he always was. I can’t remember the details, but I don’t think Jack was married that long ago, which means Desmond met Jack only a year or two before the plane crash. Based on how ancient all the computers and stuff are in the hatch, I think its safe to say Desmond didn’t build it.

On the flip side, Desmond told Jack “see you in another life time” and did not look at all surprised to see Jack in the hatch. In fact, it seemed as if he was expecting him.

The artificial light seems obvious. We saw the giant artificial lights hanging from the ceiling.

Speaking of lights, I was trying to reconcile the fact that there was a beam of light in this episode, yet the hatch just sort of lit up after the Boone sacrifice. The beam makes sense. Desmond had all these mirrors set up and when he turned the search light on, the beams reflected off the mirrors and shot up through the hatch window. That doesn’t explan the other incident. Any thoughts?

I agree that the symbol says Dharma. Fits in nicely with the theme that the island somehow helps people to reconcile their problems/emotions/physical disabilities from their “real” lives.

The mural’s got a lot of stuff in there. Most notable to me are the numbers prominantly displayed (16, 42, etc.) as well as the number 108, which equals all the numbers added up. There’s a giant arrow pointing to a pretty scary face, which is next to a picture of an “eye”, the letter “M”, and the words “sick” (I am sick). There’s also a bunch of fish, which I’m sure represents the ocean surrounding the island, and a bunch of stick figures stacked in the left hand corner, which I assume represents the island. Ther’s a few white houses and also what appears to be tic marks on the left hand side, sort of like someone was counting the days they’ve been there. Since the paint supplies are still sitting there, I assume the mural has recently been painted, presumably by Desmond. If the mural was painted by Desmond, is he sick or are the shots he’s injecting himself with helping fight of the sickness?
