Well, roughly two hours in and it’s pretty obviously an ambitious game, perhaps just out of the developer’s reach. I haven’t seen any game-breaking bugs yet, but it’s pretty rough around the edges. Still, I’m hooked - the setting and story are aces, it looks great on my rig, it’s challenging, and it’s just a great period piece.
Started a fistfight with a townie, got my ass handed to me, but instead of running away I started a second fight with him and whooped him. He still wouldn’t give me what he owed my father, so I enlisted some friends to rough him up even further. I could have sneaked into his house and tried to pilfer the items, but I didn’t want to risk it in the middle of the day.
I did fine with the swordfight training, but can’t seem to land a single blow against an actual foe when I need to. Tried to stop a rape and got murdered. Tried to flee on horseback and got murdered. I’m getting murdered a lot, is what I’m saying.
I don’t know anything about any gamergate stuff, and if the developer is some sort of racist MRA prick, that would definitely suck, but I’m pretty sure this game was built by more than one person. The game does seem to be striving for some level of authenticity, and you inhabit a pre-made character, you don’t roll your own, so on the surface at least it seems like complaints about not being able to play as a different race or gender aren’t particularly meaningful.
Wait… my new game is racist? But… I mean… isn’t it historically accurate?
To be fair, if it was truly striving for historical accuracy, I doubt Brian Blessed would be voicing a Czech noble in it.
It appears the lead Dev is a gamergater.
Vavra’s a weird guy. On the one hand he comes across as genuinely intelligent and thoughtful, but then he’ll run his mouth off and say something really stupid that just illustrates why a lot of people have little patience with the pro-GG crowd. Good article on him here.
A[quote name=“D.T.” url=“/community/t/160040/kingdom-come-deliverance#post_4472444”]I need to finish Uncharted 4. I’m 99% of the way done.
I need to get further than the first village in Witcher 3 (you are all free to whip and harass me for this one).
I got to the third island or so in Pokemon Sun when something else grabbed my attention. Or getting a Switch!
I have Secret of Mana going on the SNES Classic.
It goes on… I get bored or I get free time and it becomes paralysis by analysis trying to decide what to play. Instead of hunkering down and completing something, I give up and go back to something familiar like Breath of the Wild or Skyrim for a few hours.

DT and I are in the same W3 boat! I juuuust got around to killing the griffin (again) in the first two or so hours of the game. I’ve started it and walked away in the first few hours of play about three times in the last year. Always something shinier, like god help me, finishing ME: Andromeda, or replaying Red Dead Redemption.
This time, W3, I’ll stick with you, damn it.
Edit: And getting a Switch! That took time away too.
I started playing Assassins Creed Origins and was shocked to find myself not playing a lily white guy. I was on Ubisoft support for like an hour!
“Yeah, my guy speaks with this thick accent and his skin is kind of… Brownish? I think I have a glitch or something.”
AGamergaters are horrible people, no doubt, but I can understand if the developer got riled up about people asking him why there isn’t an option to play as a black guy in a game that’s supposed to be a historically accurate representation of medieval Bohemia.
Imagine asking an African developer making a game about the Zulu Wars of conquest why you can’t play as a white guy.
Im all for tolerance and inclusivity in media, but not at the expense of historical realism if the media in question is trying to be accurate about it.
If it were trying to be accurate about it there would be black people. It’s not like Europe was behind a wall until the 16th Century. Trade with the Middle East and Africa was kind of a big deal.
And there are plenty of examples of people of colour in medieval european literature. Just one example: “Aucassin and Nicolette” is a 12th Century French story about a french nobleman who falls in love with an arabian servant (who it ultimately turns out is a princess who had been kidnapped and sold into slavery). And there were definitely African christians as far north as Ireland during the Dark Ages.
This quote from an IGN reader sums up my experience so far:
“But I can honestly say, I am having tons of fun. I am dying, I am poor, I am low on food, my weapons are dull, my bow is weak an my aim is faulty, but I am having a blast.”
There was a black samurai in Japan once. Doesn’t mean we should have thinkpieces calling out Rashomon for not having Samuel L. Jackson in it.
This game takes place in Bohemia, what I believe would be the Czech Republic today. Small villages and castles. I don’t think the game goes into any cities like Prague.

Don’t be silly…that question would never be asked, you wouldn’t get a lot of stupid think pieces written on it, and NeoGAF (or I guess ResetEra now) wouldn’t be calling for blood when the developer didn’t do it.
Anyways, this game looks really good. It’s too bad it released so close to Monster Hunter World and Dragon Ball FighterZ. Seems too bad it’s taken them so like to release this too. When they first showed it off I don’t even think For Honor was in development, but For Honor ended up beating it to market by about a year…and I’d guess they’d draw comparisons over the combat.
This still puts it on a major trade route between Constantinople and Germany. And Rome and Poland.
You can’t claim historical authenticity when you’re effectively saying that somehow after the fall of the Roman Empire all of the people of colour that came to Europe to trade with the Romans, or were forcibly relocated to Europe to be slaves for the Romans, all vanished. This kind of historical erasure is what leads to ethnonationalism. Europe wasn’t some homogeneous lily-white mass at any point after the last ice age, and definitely wasn’t in post-Roman times.

No, you can stil claim historical authenticity and have it be true.
I asked Bessie the Spider-Horse whether she’d noticed any bugs. I think she might’ve taken it literally…
The thing is, so far? This game’s actually been really good. It’s just rough as guts. And they clearly designed the lockpicking mechanic around m&kb with no optimization for gamepads, because it’s bloody impossible with thumbsticks. I really hope they put the work in and get out a good number of patches, because there’s a lot to love here. Story’s great, combat’s tricky but fun and the score’s fantastic.
I’ve added this to my wishlist because I can tell this’ll be one to play in a few patches time.
Take out the “having fun” part, and it sounds like My Life: The Game.
