And the PC Gamer review (in English)

Here’s a dumb question… is this game actually coming out the 16th? I’ve seen that release date all over the place, but the last time I paid any attention there was a lawsuit with VUG. Is that settled and everything is ready to go?

It will indeed be available in stores and for paid download on Steam on the 16th.

My badness

D’oh, edited to say something totally different.

It’s funny, I don’t feel the anticipation for this like I did a few months ago. I don’t think it’s due to Halo 2 next week…just not sure what it is.

I’m not hyped that much, but I’m definitely looking forward to it. The only thing I’m worried about is that I’m so into first-person RPG type games now that HL2’s pure action might bore me. Despite anticipating DOOM III for years, I read enough comments that I knew not to even bother, even though a good part of that was just due to design things like monster closets that I’m guessing HL2 doesn’t have. Fingers crossed they try to go above and beyond the formula here… after just having replayed DEUS EX, my internal standards are pegging the meter.

The reviews have all mentioned that while HL1 was full of jumping puzzles, HL2 is full of cool physics puzzles.

The weapons in Half Life games are more tools than just implements of destruction. Picking the right one for the job is the most importand thing in combat. That’s why the gravity guns seems so damn cool. You’ll be able to throw enemie’s grenades back at them, pick stuff up and use it as a shield, launch sawblades and explosive objects, etc.

You’ll also be able to get squadmates, and command them to scout ahead for you. Reviews have mentioned this is particularly useful in dangerous areas.

So, basically it’s everything good from the FPS genre, perfectly formed and refined, according to the uniformly glowing reviews.

Thx for the answers, Kyle. I’ll definitely be checking out impressions when the game drops.

Theres a fake preload unlocker going around that’s actually a virus. 9 days away and it hasn’t been leaked/cracked yet, impressive.

That’s 9 days until we get to launch sawblades into screaming flaming zombies.

Is the 7th pre-load needed if you’re playing in English? Tried downloading and it still says I have the complete game on my harddrive…just curious.

I imagine they’re using 256-bit encryption. It’s crackable… if you’ve got access to the Earth Simulator, and about 1,000 years spare time…

The easiest way to crack it would be to simply steal a key from Valve, but I imagine their security has improved slightly over the past year.

I think you need all the preloads, yes.

The number of bits or whatever in the encryption is irrelevant. Counter Strike: Source was cracked the day it came out, and any pirate can still play it online for free, on any server.

For HL2,it’s not simply a matter of cracking it. The last few files, like the actual game .exe won’t come until launch day.

So, the only way would be if an actual physical copy has been stolen from a manufacturing plant. That’s the only place where a complete version is.

So, it will unlock at 3 AM on the 16th for us on the east coast. That’s midnight for the west coast.

It’s been confirmed that even retail copies will need to do a one time (that’s one time, not every time you play) online activation through Steam to start playing single player HL2. So, theoretically, even if retailers break the street date and sell physical copies early, Steam won’t let you play it until it’s time.

Midnight? I thought it was being released at 6pm, which was nice because that worked out as 12pm over here in the UK. Now I’m going to have to wait until…what…6am? And you better believe I will.

T-minus…less than 6 Days and counting…

Video card isn’t the best, but it’ll work.

Valve has said time and again that they are making HL2 to be HIGHLY scalable. Your system is pretty much guaranteed to run the game at a playable framerate. The question is what kind of visual downgrades the game will have to make that possible.

If you have Counter Strike: Source, try running the Source Stress Test with different graphical settings and see what kind of fps you get.

I can run Counter-Strike: Source a bit better than I can run Doom 3. However, the Source engine is supposedly more ATI friendly. Either way, I think HL2 will run smoother than Doom 3 on most any setup.
